SUSANVILLE, CALIF. (April 3) — Diamond Mountain Speedway opened its 2021 season with a Friday/Saturday show on Easter weekend. Good car counts, fans in the stands were a positive sign for the upcoming season.
Before the main events began there was an Easter Egg hunt on the infield. Dozens of plastic colored eggs were put out as youngsters from the stands and pits converged on the area. Many carried Easter baskets and on the signal the rush was on. The made quick work of the eggs but those that collected a gold one found there were three one dollar bills inside.
Mini Stocks were fist and at the start of their 20-lap affair Katelynn Robertson was on point. Soon Tom Dadis was not far behind as he gave chase. They finished in that order, giving Robertson a sweep of the weekend, while Didas ended up second.
While seven Dwarf Cars were on hand only six of them answered the green to start their e15-lap main. First on point was Glenn Sciarani but behind him Joe Frock was moving toward the front. Two laps into the race Frock was second and the chase was on.
Eventually Frock, after several laps made the winning pass. Next to take up the chase was Chris Christiano but had to settle for second behind Frock while Sciarani ended up third.
At the trophy presentation Frock said, “He (Sciarani) got off to a good lead and was running really well. We were trying it on the bottom and couldn’t make it work. So we decided to stop messing around and just go with the high line. The banking on this track makes it really nice. No problems, just got a really good test and tune, pretty happy with what we have.”
Then he thanked sponsors Damron Racing Las Vegas, R&J Landscaping, Wild Island, DRI, Pro Mechanix, Hooked up Performance, and Zoomaluma Graphics.
Probably the wildest race of the night was the IMCA Northern Sportmod main. While 17 cars were in the field one of them didn’t make the start of the 25-lap main. It took a pair of attempts to get the race rolling and at each green flag Andrew Peckham jumped into the lead with Colton Chew giving chase. Then thing kind of went downhill as six cautions slowed the race and incidents eliminated half the field.
In the end Peckham prevailed and won followed by Richard Longacre, Chew with Phillip Shelby finishing fourth.
” We were really good, just a lot of yellow flags and I was wearing my restarts out,” Peckham said later. “I was waiting for the 86 car to come popping around on the top but luckily he didn’t get a chance this time.”
Then he thanked sponsors, Steel City, 1-2 Graphics, Northstar Trucking and Les Schwab Tires for their support.
Battle Bron Winged Sprints began their season this weekend. There were 10 cars that took the green and association president Bruce Ferier jumped into the lead. At first Josh Bolt held second then fell back while Friday’s winner Orry Stevens took over second with Nick Purdy in third.
Two cautions slowed the pace but when the checkered flag waved Ferrier won with Grasen Tenora second followed by Stevens and Purdy.
Next up were the IMCA A mods. There were so many a B main had to set the field and Kevin Kennemore won that race. Then it was time for the main and 18 cars took the green. Up front Chris Nieman was on point and led the charge with Ryan McDaniel giving chase.
After several laps of close racing McDaniel took the lead and while Nieman fell back Riley Simmons took second and was giving chase. It only took five or six laps for the leaders to catch slower traffic and that’s when what was the winning pass happened.
There was one caution with three to go but on the restart McDaniel took off with Simmons, Albert Bill and Nieman after him. They finished in that order.
Asked about the race McDaniel said, “I was just waiting for him (Nieman) to make a mistake. Thetop was so fast and I didn’t want to run the bottom. He was tailing out on an exit when I was searching so I’d have a run.
“I could get under him just couldn’t get off the turn in the middle. The lap cars screwed him a little bit, he checked up and I just never let off. I just drove it to the bottom and we were either going to crash or win, one of the two.”
Then he thanked sponsors McDaniel Motorsports, Donco Plumbing, Joe Car Racing and Race Chassis.
Ending the night were the Stock Cars and 18 of them took the green. It took a pair of attempts to get things rolling as first one car blew up before a lap was completed. The second green only lasted a lap before there was another caution.
Finally things were rolling and up front Royce Goetz and Randy Boyd had a side-by-side and nose-to-tail to see who was going to claim the lead. Finally Goetz as able to take the point a lap or so before another caution.
At the checkered 14 of the cars finished with Goetz taking the victor followed by Boyd, Jeff Marson and Robert Warf.
“We’re trying some new stuff, different spring changes and it took me a little bit to figure out the car and how it works on a good dry slick track,” Goetz said. “There was on time I thought I was going out with all those cars coming off Turn 2 where my brother had actually spun out and two other cars got together. I thought I was going around.”
Then he thanked sponsors Go Fast Racing, Battle Born Performance, Winning Attitude Motorsports and Royce Goetz Racing.
