FERNLEY, NV (March 28) — Once again the Sandbox, or Fernley Motocross Track, echoed with the sounds of racing. Nice weather just highlighted the fist day of the 2021 season. Usually this race gets a large turnout however this time it was a bit more than anticipated. The reason was probably due to everyone wanting to finally back back on the track.
Hosting the event was the Reno chapter of the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG) and one of them said the entry count was 593. Since several riders ride in more than one class the best guess would be at least 450 riders or more. With 1,600 spectators the pits and over flow area was packed.
For two Reno riders it was a great day as they topped both pro classes they raced in.
After winning the second 250/450 Pro moto Justin Minsch said, “The track’s a little bumpy but its fun and I’m trying to get through it smoothly.”
Then he thanked his girl friend Alli as well as his parents.
The 125/250 Pro class didn’t work out so well. While it seemed Minsch won he was disqualified and that gave the day’s victory to Alec Green.
Only two riders scored double victories. One of them was Rogen Hill from Round Mountain as he won in the 85cc, 13 and over as well as the 85cc Open Class. The other double winner was Tim Stone from Minden, who won in the 25+ Open Class as well as topping the 250/450 Intermediate Class.
While many races were run aways there were some close ones where it went right down to the finish as to who would win that particular moto or class for the day.
Once the gate dropped to start the second 65cc, 10 and up moto both Jaiden Roberts and Braydn Wike began a nose-to-tail duel that lasted for almost the entire race. In the end Roberts hung on to score the win but Sam Mukha ended up second while Wike ended up third. However in the final count it was Roberts, Wike and Mukha for the top three spots in the class.
In motocross a rider’s finishing places are totaled up. Then it’s like golf where the lowest score is actually the winner and everyone else follows after that. If there is a tie the winner of the second moto gets the victory.
A good example was the Woman’s “A” race. In the first moto Shami Potrantz was able to hold off Lucy Moran for the win. After the gate dropped for their second moto it appeared to be a repeat of their first race.
However in the end Moran was able to get past and reach the finish first so she won the day’s overall victory. Afterwards both women exchanged congratulations on a good race. Further back Emma Helming won the Women’s “B” class.
Looking at the age ladder and it goes from the youngest to the oldest veterans at the start are the Pee Wee’s or 50cc class where the race single speed bikes. Parker Hatfield won in the 4 to 6 group while Talon Baker was the 7 & Up winner and the Open winner was Maverick Parke.
When these younsters move into the 65cc Class they learn how to shift and handle the greater speed. Corde Hunter was the 9 and Under winner while the 10 and over victor was Jaiden Roberts while Wyatt Berrington won the Open Class.
Next is the 85cc Classes where the older younger riders can really get some speed. This is the last small bike class before they move into the big bike classes. Hudson Losey won the 12 and Under Class while Rogen Hill scored a double winning both the 13 and Up as well the Open races. In Supermini it was Samuel McCord.
Moving to the top of the age ladder is the 60+ or Grand Pa Class. Tay Gragg was the winner followed by Keven Stewart and Michael Butler. In the 50+ Class Bob Heeb was the Junior winner while Anthony Fagundes was the lone 50+ Expert.
Full or nearly full starting gates were the story this day. The amount of younger riders indicates motocross is this region will be around for quite a long time.
With all the hard racing several riders went down, many times in a pile up at the first turn after the starting gate. Fortunately most got back up, restarted their bikes and took off again. A couple did need a ride back to their pits and one may have gotten an ambulance ride but that rider’s condition is unknown when this was posted.
Next round for BBMX is the weekend of April 17/18 out at Carlin.
