RENO, NV (12-7) – This Sunday two Toy Runs helped area children with their donations. One was for the two-wheeled set while the other group was Reno Cars & Coffee.
For the past few weeks Reno Harley Davidson has had a toy drive where people could donate a new unwrapped toy. This was supposed to end with the 40th annual Reno Toy Run staged by the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs. They are part of a national motorcycle group and in this area there are at least 30 clubs on the list.
Unfortunately due the latest restrictions the actual meet was moved to Rancho San Rafael. As it was almost a last minute change some did show up at Reno Harley but soon left fot the park. One quick visitor was Santa himself but he then led everyone off to the park.
Around noon everyone then paraded to a warehouse in Reno where toys were collected to be handed out later
• Earlier that morning around 10 a.m. Reno Cars & Coffee had its first of the month meet close to the Keitzke Starbucks. With the good weather there was another huge turn out and this meet was special as it marked the 5th Annual Toy Drive by the group.
Then at 11:30 they paraded over to Reno Harley Davidson where toys were dropped off, enlarging the amount already by the dealership’s Christmas tree.
• Up at Lake Tahoe the Aces High Rally helped the Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger Toy Drive. Some from Carson Cars & Coffee as well as the local police all chipped in for this.
Looks they got a bunch of toys that can be distributed to help make a happy Christmas for local children. This coming Sunday the Lucky Beaver Bar and Burger in Reno will have its toy drive beginning at noon.
Despite all the problems caused by lock downs, restrictions and the like this virus has caused, clubs are joining forces to help children from disadvantaged families have some joy in their Christmas.
REPORTER’S NOTE: Due to transportation problems I was unable to be at these Toy Drives so want to express my appreciation for those that allowed me to use their photographs.
SEASON IN REVIEW:
REPORTER’S NOTE: This is the seconde review and another one should follow in a couple of weeks.
It would be a gross understatement to say this year’s racing season was unusual. However several tracks were able to get even a shortened season in and champions were crowned.
Rattlesnake Raceway, located just east of downtown Fallon, is one of them. Counting the two-day Dirt Track Championships the track was able to get in eight races this season.
In Hobby Stocks David Ausano claimed the title over Roy Peterson. For Ausano his total was 333 points while Peterson, even though he had some car problems, wound up with 309 points.
It was an even closer battle in Gen-X where Jorden Riley scored 332 points as Travis Showe fell just short by five points at the end.
Wade Lumsden was the only IMCA Modified driver so he got that title.
This past year the track introduced the Bootlegger class and the top three were pretty close in points.
Taking the championship was Stuart Satathite with 370 points but not far behind with a tie in points at 363 was the duo of Ace Green and Ray Blankenship. Further back with 329 points was fourth place Jeremy Lampley.
At the annual awards banquet some special awards were handed out. The Most Appreciated Volunteer was Adam Gilmore, the Hard Luck Award went to Bobbie Schostak, the Most Improved Driver is Ace Green and the Best Sportsmanship Award went to Ray Blankinship.
The Dirt Track Championships ends the racing season and is a series in itself. This year six classes ran for those crowns.
The DTC winners were Dan Dias in Hobby Stock, Mikki Beuchat in Gen-X, Chris Nieman in A Mods, Richard Longacre in Sport Mods, Shawn Jones in Dwarf Cars and Taggert Garland in Bootleggers.
Another series worth mentioning that visits Rattlesnake and other Northern Nevada Tracks is the I-80 Series. This year it ended at 95 Motor Sports Park in Fernley at their season ending two-day show.
Three classes that race at all the tracks are included and the cars must be legal at their home track. This year’s winners are, Cory Sample in Modifieds, David Ausano in Hobby Stocks and the sprint car winner is Trey Walters.
OTHER RACING NEWS:
• Sad news for the motocross community. Received word Sunday about the passing of Jake Azevedo Sr. known as the “Old Man.” Apparently he was the principle owner of Oatfield Raceway.
He also is one of the promoters of the 2020 Triple Crown MX series scheduled to end on the weekend of December 13th with a three-day show. No word as of yet if that race will actually happen. Hope to have word by Thursday’s preview article.
• Teresa’s Garage Radio Show is on from 2 until 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Over the air in the Reno/Sparks area it can be heard on 1180 AM or the more powerful 1160 AM.
The show is on a Podcast at amm.streamon.fm and can be seen live on Face Book. This week we celebrate the co-host Emily Cook’s birthday.
