STEAD, NV (July 26) – Desert Park Raceway echoed with the sound of go kart racing this Sunday. It was the second round of the Northern Nevada Kart Club’s shortened season with plenty of drivers ready to go.
During the day five drivers would sweep their classes while at the bottom of the age group a 5-year-old was enjoying his first race.
At the bottom of the age and speed ladder are the Kid Karts, these low power racers are where the youngest drivers earn their racing spurs. Some appear almost ready to move up a class while others need more experience.
The big winner was Kylie Johnson, who won the main event. Unlike other times everyone stayed on the track and finished the race no matter what their speed was. Probably the youngest competitor was 5-year-old Kaid Ryckebosch, whose Grandfather and Grand Uncle were both racing karts.
At the top of the speed ladder are the 125 Shifter karts. They use a gearbox and are the fastest of all around the track.
These karts use a standing start and when the greens lights went on Jeff Wamre got the best start and led Mitch Kennedy for the first lap. On the next lap, while going up the hill Kennedy found his opening and took the point.
After that is was smooth sailing for him although Wamre wasn’t too far behind. Gerry Williams had third for much of the race but dropped to fourth after Adam Auerbach took the spot.
After the race Kennedy, who swept the day said, “Jeff got a great start like he usually does and just had a good run on him going up the hill. I’ve learned with Jeff you pass him as quick as you can he’s really become quite the good shifter driver.”.
Going back down the age ladder both Junior classes had winners that also swept both their heats and main.
It would be a green to checkered run for cooper Perez, whose parents bring him up from Modesto, California. However the race was for second and it was a three-way battle between Kayden Williams, Isaiah Nobles and Jeremiah Nobles, who finished in that order.
After the post race check Perez said, “It was fun and had some good competition.”
Then he thanked C&R Racing, Invader Motorsports, Davis Motorsports and Invader Racing Engines.
When the green flag waved sending the Junior 2 racers off Brooks Anderline grabbed the point. Behind him three karts tangled in Turn 2 but no one was injured.
For Anderline it marked a sweep as he also won both heat races. Matthew Fecko finished second ahead of Giovanni Medina. During the race Anderline was pressing so hard he was almost out of breath at the post race weigh in.
After catching his breath he said, “That was so fun it took the wind out of me. I got out there and was just trying to run as hard as I can. My dad’s giving me bigger and bigger gaps with his hands.”
Then he thanked teammate Andrew Cushman, who practices with him as well as teammates Joe, Matthew and his family.
Another driver making his return to NNKC racing was Steve Ryckebosch. He also swept the day but there were others chasing him.
On the green Ryckebosch took off with Robert Judd giving chase and who was being pursued by Dean Andrews. In the end Ryckebosch prevailed while Andrews ended up second ahead of third place Judd while the class senior citizen Mike McMullen finished a solid fourth.
After the race a happy Ryckebosch said, “It was controlled and I was getting faster towards the end. The track was coming to me and I haven’t raced in two years.”
Both the Senior and Master LO206 classes ran their heats together. However it was decided to give them separate main events.
First off was the Senior group but it took a pair of attempts before they were sent on their way. Up front was Zach Rivera, on his way to sweeping the day, but behind him there was a four-way duel for second.
While Rivera was leaving everyone in his wake Tanner Schultz moved through the second group and eventually had a solid hold over second. Behind him Chase Dulude ended up third with Deeahmee Malone holding down fourth and they all finished in that order.
After the win Rivera said, “You know they did that pavement and in the off season it was hard, it was definitely a lot different as a track. But now that we’ve had people out here and plenty of sessions out here the track feels better than ever. I really love it out here, I really love club racing out here running the 206 is 100% worth it.’
He was also impressed at the good turn out for this race.
“This is a really good amount of people for a club race,”he said. “I’m happy that all the workers come out and help, the race directors, the flagmen, tech everybody that comes out and makes this thing come together. I really appreciate everybody that does that.”
Then he thanked is father, who owns Nevada Kart Sport and the new chassis, which is a VLA as Rivers feels it’s a great kart for the 206 motor.
When the Master LO206 class started on point was Jeff Wamre but behind him Harell Fisher, Rich Phillips and Racheel Williams made it a four-way duel for the lead.
As the laps progressed Wamre put some distance between himself and the others. Fisher and Phillips were having a wheel-to-wheel, nose-to-tail duel for third while Williams fell back to a solo fourth.
Wamre would win the race but two-thirds through the final lap Fisher and Phillips tangled and wound up on the grass. This handed the runner up spot to a delighted Williams and boosted Gil Atkinson to third.
Back at the post race weigh in Wamre said, “Got to thank Steve Dow, he’s the kart owner, I’m just the driver. He gave me a quick kart today and I had a good time. Had some out of towners show up so we had a good day. The track’s doing okay and it’s getting better as time goes by and that’s all the matters.”
Last up for the day was the Master Super Stock class. On the green pole sitter Jason Anderline let buy on the third lap had to pull out with kart problems.
Now Paul Picotte was on point with Nat Sombatsiri and Edward Atkins giving chase. Lap after lap they tore around the track but late in the 14-lap race Sombatsiri took over the lead.
At the finish Sombatsiri won followed by Atkins, Paul Picotte and Brud Beaudoin, who ended up fourth.
After the post race weigh in where he was greeted by several fellow drivers Sombatsiri said, “I got dropped two positions because I bumped somebody luckily the front two went out or something so I just have to catch them so I was lucky. This is my second first place after racing 20 years and the first was five years ago. This year I’m going for the championship.”
Then he thanked Adam Auerback for physical conditioning, Roy Brewer who builds five 81 mods racing engines and Brud Beaudoin for starting the Super Stock class.
Next up for the NNKC is their annual night race on Saturday, August 22nd. They start in the late afternoon and race into the night. Several of the drivers will decorate their karts with lights, it’s always a fun event.

• After taking Monday off the Tuesday Cruise Night at the South Meadows Steak ‘N Shake gets the week rolling. The meet is between 5 and 9 p.m. with music, awards and prizes.
Then on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m. there is a cruise in at the Sparks A&W located across from Reed High School. Thursday is an off day for cruising before the weekend banquet begins.
