FERNLEY, NV (June 13) – First day race of the season drew an expected small field to the oval at 95 Motor Sport Complex. This was due to the season opening race in Susanville.
No matter as the racing was intense and the Hobby Stock main provided many thrills for the fans, it was a case of saving the last for best. It was a case of old age and experience used to hold off those also wanting the victory.
It required two attempts to start the Hobby Stock main as the car of Shane Boyd stalled coming out of Turn 4. Once the order was reset it was time and the green waved.
Up front Roy Peterson was on point then spun in front of the pack. Somehow everyone missed him so the caution was short lived.
Next time Boyd was on point then spun exiting Turn 2 but this time his car lost some pieces of its nose after being hit by two or three cars. The race was then stopped as the safety crew cleaned up the debris.
Finally the green waved again and the field took off. Up front Haxall was on point but being challenged by Rick Miller with Peterson taking over third while Davie Paine was lurking in 4th ready to pounce.
Paine, who raced the largest car out there made several challenges but eventually got loose and slipped back. Now Peterson had taken over second with Miller right behind him.
In the final laps Peterson mounted a stiff challenge but a minor slip up allowed Haxall to escape and grab the victory.
After pulling up to the flag stand Haxall got our and waved the checkered flag. Then he said, ” That was a good one there, I really had some fun. I don’t usually like running on the bottom, I’m not a huggy pole kind of guy but that was the track. You run what they give you, you know. We had a couple of cross overs, it was fun, a good race, a lot of fun.
Then he thanked Jeanette, his girl friend. Haxall also mentioned he built the car himself and if anybody wants one to contact him.
When the A Mod main began Wade Lumsden jumped into the lead while Robert Miller was second. Soon after the race began Mark Skender used an inside move to claim second.
Two laps into the race Miller made his move and took over the lead. A position he’d hold for the rest of the race but behind was a three-was battle for second.
A caution slowed the pace and erased Miller’s advantage when McQueen spun. Once he green waved again Miller took off while Skender and Lumsden were dueling over the second spot.
Then Skender spun and somehow everyone missed him. After everyone got into the proper order the green waved again and Miller took off.
Behind him the battle for second continued and after Miller too the checkered flag Thibodeaux ended up second a headof Lumsden and Skender.
After his victory lap Miller said, “It was good, I know we didn’t have many cars here. We went through some things on the car between Lyle Hopper and myself and Jimmy Reeves at BMX. It did pretty good and we’ll see how it fares tonight at Susanville. Just like to thank the sponsors, my brother RJ Landscaping, Winning Attitude, Premier Auto Body and Leo Mayfield Home Repairs.”
Next up were the Sport Mods but only two of them took the flag. The race was all Randy Miller as Ryan Deforest was unable to keep up with him.
After his victory lap Miller said, ” This car’s been good, Lyle Hopper from Winning Attitudes and my brother Robert Miller and Jimmy at BMS have really worked their butts off to get it really good. All I did was point it where it needed to go and it went. Need a special shout out to my wife Amy and my sons Tyler and Nathan and my crew chief Ryan Wibel.”
After that he headed back to the pits where the A mod teams loaded up and headed for the race in Susanville.
There were only two Gen-X cars that showed up. Unfortunately Daniel Keleve’s day ended early after hitting the backstretch wall. Shane Ussery did get some laps in but his car stopped to a problem and he was pushed to the pits ending the day.
Now the oval track is apparently going dark until August as there is a project to refurbish many of the grandstand seats. Then once again racing will take to the oval.
