FERNLEY, NV (May 29) – New owners and warm weather greeted fans and racers as the season began at the 95 Motor Sports Complex. The car count was good including 26 A mods ready to do battle on this dirt oval.
After the dust settled when the 30-lap A Mod main ended winner Alex Stanford said, “I was wondering how many laps were left before it was going to get over. The car was pretty good but it was pretty rutted down in Turn 3. I was just trying to hit my marks, forget abut what was going on behind me, drive my own race and it paid off. It’s been a while since I got me a win and I needed this.”
Then he thanked his father for all the support he gives as well as his sponsors. Those are Stanford Chopping, Golden Memorial, Central Irrigation. Pro Vinyl, J&S Farms, TDS Suspension and PCD Racecars.
When the main began Stanford was on the pole with Ryan McDaniel right beside him. On the green Stanford just took off with the pack chasing him.
After several laps Stanford caught a pack of slower cars and that kind of held him up. Then a caution bunched things up with Sandford in the lead followed by McDaniel, Shawn Natenstedt and Robert Miller.
Up front it was all Stanford as he was leaving everyone in his dust. Behind him there was a big battle for second through fourth place. Much of the time the fight for second was between McDaniel and Shawn Natenstedt although Chris Nieman wasn’t far behind them.
During the final seven laps there were two cautions but every time Sanford took off while the others chased him.
In the end Stanford won going away followed by McDaniel, Natenstedt and Nieman. At the back four starters didn’t finish the race leaving Barry Stone as the tail end Charlie.
With 26 IMCA A Mods on hand it was necessary to have six heats, where the first two first two earned a berth in the A main. The rest competed in a B main where Royce Goetz won.
Seven IMCA B Mods were on hand to contest their own race. When the green waved Rusty McMillian was on point but by the second lap he was replaced by Jimmy Ray Huffman.
The next lap there was a caution when three cars spun in Turns 3 and 4 but there was no contact. On the green Huffman led Brian Cooper then another caution slowed the pace.
When the green waved again Huffman took off but Cooper first challenged him then made the winning pass. Later in the race it appeared as though Huffman may have worn out his tires so he ended up third behind runner up Craig Nieman while Cooper sailed away to victory.
There were 14 Hobby Stocks that took the green when their main began. UP front Randy Boyd was on point with Ronny Goetz not far behind him.
Three cautions followed and one of them came after Ronny Goetz had problems and pulled onto the infield. On the green Royce Goetz took over the lad then started to extend until the last caution bunched up the cars.
When the green waved again Goetz took off and ran away for the victory. Behind him Randy Boyd was second ahead of Rocky Goetz.
Asked about his night Royce Goetz said, ” It was a fun race, I just had to wait it out a little bit and let everything sort out. I’m kind of tired running the B main in the modified, then the hobby stock then the A main in the modified. But I had fun and they did an awesome job on the track.”
He did mention the dust in the A Mod main but feels all it needs is more clay in the surface.
Then he thanked his family, especially his wife as she looks after their kids while he works on the racecars. He also expressed his appreciation for the support his sponsors give him. They are A+ Machine Shop, O-Show Bodies, Winning Attitude Motorsports and Robert Miller.
Four Pure Stocks were on hand and for teenage driver Katie Robinson it was a great night. She made it a sweep winning the heat and main. Chasing her all night and ending up second was Mikki Beuchat.

• Northern Nevada Kart Club will start its season on Sunday, June 7. However no spectators will be allowed as only drivers and mechanics will be on hand plus the officials needed to run the event.

• The big news in our area is a new date for the 49th annual Virginia City Grand Prix. It’s has been moved to the weekend of October 17-18. The pre-registration has also been moved and will be open until September 10, 2020.
The weather should be a bit cooler than the August date and the $10,000 pro purse will still be offered.
• The only local radio show dedicated to all things automotive is Teresa’s Garage Radio Show heard from 2 until 3 p.m. Tuesday. In the Reno/Sparks area the show can be heard over the air at 1180 AM.
