MEMORIAL DAY WEEK RACING

RENO, NV (May – This week begins with Memorial Day but racing and other events continue today and to the weekend. As a result this article will be abbreviated.

This weekend Battle Born Motorsports had a drifting and grip event at 95 Speedway. That’s the road course behind the 95 Motor Sports Complex oval.

Promoter Adrian Buyten said many people camped out there Saturday night and he was very pleased with the event.

“It went really, really well and there were about 40 cars,” he said.

Any promoter needs some people or team to help them. In Buyten’s case Kyle Rynda, John Leedom and Isaiah Annunzio gave him some very appreciated assistance. After this meet the track’s owner plans on repaving it starting in June. So the next drift meet will be after that work is completed.

For those there James Crawshaw was taking photos of the cars on the track. You can access them at www.brand34photography.smugmug.com. Hope the participants will support him. Many thanks for allowing his photos to be used in this report.

NASCAR was back in action Sunday with the classic Coke 600 the longest race on the NASCAR Cup schedule. The marathon went longer than expected due to a rain delay of over an hour. At the checkered, which waved after midnight Brad Keselowski was the winner.

However NASCAR fans now have three more races to watch at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and all of them are on Fox Sports 1. For those without cable they are usually replayed later on You Tube.

Tonight at 4:30 p.m. the Xfinity series will take to the track then Tuesday, at 5 p.m. the Gander RV & Outdoors Trucks get their time on the oval. Finally the NASCAR Cup series returns at 5 p.m. Wednesday for their second and shorter shot at the mile and a half speedway.

Virtually all the NASCAR teams are based in that area so these races mean they are all home. They’ll start traveling next weekend.

This Friday racing returns to the oval at 95 Motor Sports Complex.

Now looking ahead to the weekend coming up in our region. On Friday, starting at 7 p.m. 95 Motor Sports Complex has its first race of this shortened season.

It appears there will be spectators allowed social distancing as well as masks are mandatory. Still should be a good night of racing.

After the Fernley race the action moved east to the Winnemucca Regional Raceway. It’s the 4th annual High Desert Classic Shoot Out that runs from May 30 and 31st or Saturday and Sunday. It’s also part of the I-80 series.

Winnemucca opens its season this weekend with a dual show, the High Desert Classic as well as the I-80 Challenge.

On Sunday the IMCA race will be $3,000 to win so there should be a pretty good turnout. Once again I’m not sure if spectators will be allowed.

This weekend the Northern Nevada Kart Club has a two-day non-racing event. Saturday is track workday where members will be getting the facility ready for the season opener.

NNKC announcement for track work day and racing seminar.

In addition, from 10 until 12:30 each day Jacob Ciari is having a race seminar. Club and non-club members are invited as he will explain the rules and other thing related to kart racing.

Looks the only off day for racers is Thursday but for motocross riders there may be practice sessions as well. I’ll have that schedule in my preview article.

Hope everyone has a good Memorial Day. Please take a few moments for those that have given their lives for our country or served and have passed out of this life. This is their day to be remembered. Be safe everyone.
