AL LOCKETT: OFF-ROAD MOTORSPORTS EXPO

RENO, NV (Mar. 30) – A sure sign of Spring is when Al Lockett has His annual show at the Convention Center. The Reno Boat Show starts the weekend followed by the Reno RV Show and the Off-Road and Motorsports Expo.

Nevada 4-Wheel Drive Association was on hand.

There was a row of  several off-road clubs. One of them is the Nevada 4-Wheel Drive Association. This group works to keep public lands open for all types of recreation.

Asked about the group’s activities Larry Calkins (On the right) said, “We call ourselves the Voice of the 4-Wheeler in the State of Nevada. We are land use advocates and our job is to keep the public lands open for future generations.

“It’s very political, depending on what regime is running the country and the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service. Things change from being restrictive to inviting us back onto the lands we own.”

He also feels people using the public lands, like 4-wheelers, motorcycle, hiking and biking need to think what it is worth to them. If they can put a dollar value on it then they should join as many groups that work to keeping these lands open.

For further information please check their website at, www.n4wda.org.

Hills Angels had one of the largest booths.

Close by was a large booth for the Hills Angels 4X4 Club. It’s a family oriented group of 4wd enthusiasts.

Linda Miller is the club president and she said, “It started with Phil and Patty Bender, who moved here in 1998 and they started picking up trash on Hunter Lake Road. Then he got involved talking with people at 4 Wheel Parts Drive and they started posting about clean ups on Hunter Lake Trail.

Linda Miller, president of the Hills Angels Club, stands by her Jeep.

“Then if evolved into, ‘we should start a club,’ and they came up with the name, Hills Angels. From that it evolved into a club with monthly meetings like we do today. So we not only maintain the club but we encourage off-road enthusiasts to be aware of their surroundings and what needs to be cleaned up, to tread lightly and leave no foot prints.”

She added the club has grown and was formalized in 2003. Today they maintain and clean up trails. The club also works with KTMB and does an annual clean up in Sun Valley.

“We try and make sure things are cleaned up so Forest Service an BLM doesn’t come along and close our public lands.”

The club meets every third Tuesday at 6 p.m. to update very one. The club is on Face Book and the website is, www.HillsAngels4X4Club.com.

The Sierra Stompers 4X4 Club also had a booth.

At one end of the row was the Sierra Stompers Four Wheel Drive Club. They are family oriented, have monthly meetings and runs. There are no dues or political position and the club is on Face Book.

Beside them was the Battle Born Off Roaders booth. In addition to trail runs this club has a very special fund raising program.

Battle Born Off Roaders is a club that helps in many areas.

Asked about the group Denise Whetzel said, “Our club is Battle Born Off Roaders, we’re the largest off road club in Northern Nevada. We’re a 501C3 and we’re here collecting donations for three things.

“We have three components to our non-profit, one is that we provide tactical for local canines, we’ve vested 17 so far and each is one thousand and eighty dollars. So we’ve covered all the way from Carson City to the Forest Service, out last two came from there.”

She added there is a veteran component where the club provided goodie bags for those in Hospice care as well as providing meals for the Veteran’s Guest House in Reno.

“Our other thing is to Adopt Trails and we have adopted the Prison Hill Loop in Carson City.”

There is an upcoming special function the club has.

In May the Club has its biggest event at Baldini’s in Sparks.

“Out major fund raiser is May 17, 10 a.m. till Noon at Baldinis’s in Sparks. Its our “Go Topless Day,” we have thousands of dollars in raffle prizes. It’s a fun day to come out and watch the displays then we’re going to have three trail runs afterwards. A fun day and all the profits go to the vesting of canines,” she said.

4-Wheel Parts and Off Road Warehouse combined for a double booth.

Not far away 4WP (Four Wheel Parts) had a double book with the Off Road Warehouse. They sell about any type of accessories an off roader might need.

On the motorsport side there were a pair of Dwarf Cars on display. These race on dirt tracks in this region.

For the motorsports side two Dwarf Car racers were on display.

One belongs to young Callie Whiting, who aspires to be a professional driver. Her car looked outstanding due to the wrap created by Grace Productions.

Once again this popular show has signaled that spring is right around the corner. Soon it will be time for boating, using an RV or going on runs with the Four Wheel Clubs.

REPORTERS NOTE: I’m a bit handicapped at present. Thanks to Al Lockett, the lady at Eurocycle loaned me an electric three-wheel scooter, which is lighter and smaller than a power chair. Many thanks to her, I believe Lynn is her name, as she accompanied me when I got to ride it to where my car was parked. I could never have done this report without her help.
