RENO, NV (Dec. 15) — Several car clubs came together this weekend to help the Children’s Cabinet. Starting the day was Reno Cars & Coffee.
Asked about why this meet was different Lance Freitas, who heads the group, explained why it was.
“This is our ninth annual Toy Run,” he said. “We wanted to donate toys for the kids and Old Slammers were doing their drive over at Winco. So I thought we’d partner with them and make one big event rather than two small events.”
While it started small more and more arrived and at 11:30 the group was going to cruise up to the Winco parking lot where the Old Slammers of Reno was having their 11th annual Toys for Kids function.
The Toys for Kids meet wasn’t just one or two clubs but a combined effort.
Asked about this Old Slammers member Bryan Hernandez said, “Today we are doing a toy drive, this is our 11th year doing it and all the effort is going towards the Children’s Cabinet. We all collectively work, and it’s not just the Old Slammers, it’s really a huge part of the automotive community. You see the Mustang Club, you see the Camaro Club, JDM, you see Low Riders, you see Trucks, a little bit of everything we have here in Reno and Northern Nevada. It’s really awesome to see everyone come together.
“A lot of people bring a variety of toys, some toys are typical Lego sets, typical play sets and then you have bikes. Hopefully that fulfills some kid’s dream at the Children’s cabinet. The11th year doing and we hope to keep doing it, keep helping the community and working with the community we have that’s it’s not just us as we’re part of the automotive community that helps the Children’s cabinet.”
Various people from different groups kept stopping by and donating toys. To name just a few there were folks from Northern Nevada Classics as well as Northern Nevada Muscle.
They overfilled two tables and more was still arriving.
Ashleigh Foster represented the Children’s Cabinet as she works there.
Asked about what they do she said, “Children’s Cabinet has been keeping children safe and families together since 1985. So we’re about to celebrate 40 years of serving this community. We provide over 40 programs and services to children and their families. We serve children from birth to age 24 and their entire family focusing on providing resources and services that for unmet needs to these families can thrive in our community.”
They are also dealing with our changing economy as the Children’s Cabinet works to help families and children.
“We do see more need and it continues to increase,” she said. “I think that goods and services are becoming more and more expensive but wages have essentially remained the same and that has caused some issues. Childcare is also incredibly expensive and often out paces what parents can afford.
We work a lot supporting the early childhood system to insure that we have more child care centers as well quality child care centers and try to make sure that families can afford these services to see their children up for success. We know that 90% of brain development occurs between ages of zero to 5 and so we want to make sure we’re providing these rich educational opportunities for youth when they are little.”
The toys kept coming and one person had gone to Walmart where he bought $2,00 worth of toys. They filled the back of his vintage VW van was full of toys.
For Northern Nevada Muscle it was a busy day. After starting with Reno Cars & Coffee they cruised up to the Old Slammers event but had one more thing to do. Justin Spencer, who heads the group explained a cruise the the planned to do.
“We’re going to Genoa to the Old Country Store as they’re having their final weekend next weekend. So we’re going in a week early so we can support them, try and get some extra money before they close. As theit deli is still open for one more week. We’re planning to meet about 12:45 and will leave around 1 p.m. and head down there.”
All in all it was another success where various car clubs came together to support the Children’s Cabinet and their important work helping the youth and families in our community.
