RACING & CAR MEET PREVIEW: AUG. 29 TO SEPT. 2

RENO, NV (AUG. 28) — Here it is Labor Day weekend and oval tracks will start shutting down next month. This means local motocross and off-road motorcycle racing will restart as we head into fall. There are a bunch of car meets and cruises still to come.

CAR MEETS:

• The Iron Mafia starts the weekend off at 8 a.m. on Thursday as the have their weekly meet. Location is Kim’s Donuts at 1328 U.S. 395 North in Gardnerville.

Summit Racing is having another Friday cruise-ins.

• On Friday, from 4 until 8 p.m. Summit Racing in Sparks is having another Cruise-In. Location is on East Glendale right after the railroad tracks.

  • That same evening, starting at 6 p.m., is the Fernley Friday Night Meet. Location is at the 76th station.

• Saturday has two meets the will keep car people entertained.

Obsolete Iron is having the 71st Last Bash on Saturday.
  • Over at the Lazy 5 Regional Park the Obsolete Iron presents the 51st Las Bash. Its open to all 1979 and older vehicles.
Biggest Little Show ‘N Shine is at the El Rancho Drive in on Saturday.
  • The El Rancho Drive In is the site of the Biggest Little Show & Shine. Show runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and will feature all models of cars, trucks and bikes.

• As usual the first Sunday of every month has two meets that aren’t that far away from each other.

Reno Cars & Coffee meets Sunday morning.
  • Reno Cars & Coffee, starting at 10 a.m. meets by the Human Bean Coffee Stand located by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lanes. There is usually a pretty good mix of cars.

  • Not far away by the Human Bean Coffee Stand at the corner of South McCarran and Longley Lanes there is a meet with the Reno Jeeps & Coffee group. As usual it’s a 10 a.m. start.

RACING (4-Wheel):

Diamond Mountain Speedway closes its regular season this weekend.

• Diamond Mountain Speedway closes out its regular season this weekend. Friday, starting at 6 p.m., is for practice. Saturday and Sunday the gates open at 3 p.m. with a 7 p.m. start to the racing.

PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

• This part is a little thin this week but here’s what I had when I posted this preview Wednesday evening.

  • This is the final week for E Street MX Park to use the 8 to 1 p.m. schedule for Saturday and Sunday practice sessions. Next week it’s 9 until 2 p.m. for their schedule.
MMX Racing closes out the summer with three days of practice sessions.
  • MMX has a full schedule and on Thursday from 9 until 2 p.m. they’ll use the Sand and Kid’s tracks. Saturday is also 9 until 2 with the Main track added then on Sunday, practice is from 9 until 3 p.m. with the Vintage track added.
Next round of the P.R.O. Motocross Summer Sundayz series is this Sunday.
  • The next round of the Summer Sundayz series is on Sunday. This time it’s at the AMP track.
  •  
  • – REP Racing didn’t post an update so I us my best guess here. My recommendation would be to check their Face Book or Instagram pages before heading out.

         + If the Fernley Sandbox MX has practice it will probably be from 8 until 1 p.m. on Sunday.

         + Riverfront MX usually has practice from 5 until 10 p.m. on Thursdays then from 9 until 2 p.m.          Saturday and Sunday.

         + Prairie City usually has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):

• Thursday at 4 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour.

• Friday is an empty day so best bet is to check www.floracing.com or www.mavtv.com which has plenty of event to catch up on. Another choice is www.youtube.com as they have highlights from several races.

• Saturday starts to get busy as TruTV, at 5:30 a.m. has the MotoGP Sprints from Aragon.

  • At 12:30 p.m. the USA Network airs the Xfinity race from Darlington Raceway. Then at 3 p.m. Peacock broadcast the first Indy Car race from the classic one-mile oval at Milwaukee.

• Sunday features some classic races, a couple of them determine, who will be included in the championship races.

  • The racing day begins at 4:30 a.m. when TruTV broadcasts the Moto GP race from Aragon.

  • Then at 5:55 a.m. ESPN has the Grand Prix of Italy. This race happens at the classic Monza Park.
  • Fox Sport 1 comes on at 10 a.m. with the NHRA Qualifying Show #1.
  • At noon USA and Peacock broadcast the second Indy Car race on the classic track at Milwaukee.
  • Fox at 2 p.m. has the NHRA FC All Star Call Out from the U.S Nationals at Indianapolis.

  • USA comes on a 3 p.m. to air the NASCAR Cup event from Darlington Raceway, the track called “Too Tough to Tame,” and the Lady in Black. This is a critical race for some drivers as it determines which ones will be in the playoffs.
  • Fox Sports 1 comes back on at 3:30 p.m. with Qualifying Show #2 for the NHRA.
  • Finally the day ends at 5:30 p.m. when Fox Sports 1 has ARCA racing from DuQuoin.

• Labor Day as usual continues into Monday. It’s the 70th anniversary of the NHRA U.S. Nationals. This race determines which drivers are in the count down to the season’s championship.

  • Fox Sports 1 starts thing at 9 a.m. with final runs. Then at 11 a.m. Fox stakes over with the final championship runs. For several teams it’s critical if they are to have a chance at their class championship.

Time to pre-register for Round 7 of the BBMX series that will be at Winnemucca MX.

Next weekend is Round 7 of this year’s BBMX series, which will be held at Winnemucca MX.

If you have a youngster racing in the Stacy class it’s time to pre-register them for Round 7 of the BBMX series.

         -Another fun part of BBMX events is the Stacyc races. The youngest riders compete in this class         and like those on big bikes, it’s time to pre-register.

Winnemucca MX is in need of flaggers for next week’s motocross weekend. Not only does one get fed but there is some money to be made.
  • The track is also looking for flaggers as they are a very necessary to rider safety. So if you’re interested please send them a message.

• At little over a week before Reno Area Dirt Riders, or RAD, holds its clean up on East Peavine, off north Virginia Street. It’s starts at 8 a.m. Saturday the 7th to miss the heat of the day.

  • Sponsors and other shops are donating prizes for and gift cards for those participating. Even if one isn’t a rider feel free to come and help. Just be sure to dress properly with gloves as you’ll be helping keeping out public lands so they can be used for recreation.
  • Davey’s American Racing is found on Face Book. His focus is on western oval tracks as well as national series.

  • He recently started his broadcasts so check Face Book around 6 p.m. Wednesday. He also posts during the week.
