RENO, NV (July 31) — As we bid good-by to July it’s time to welcome August. It’s a busy time for car groups as Hot August Nights gets rolling and there is racing, both in our region as well as on TV.
CAR MEETS:
• The Iron Mafia gets Thursday rolling with its weekly meet at Kim’s Donuts. Meet begins at 8 a.m., when it’s still cool, and the location is 1328 U.S. 395 North in Gardnerville.
• This is the last of the Thursday Night Cruises in Carson. Goes from 5 until 7 p.m. and this week the meeting is Bully’s on College Parkway.
• Summit Racing in Sparks, starting at 4 p.m. is hosting another Friday Cruise-In. All vehicles are welcome and the location is on East Glendale in Sparks by the railroad tracks.
• To the east, starting at 6:30 p.m., there is another Friday Night Meet in Fernley. Location is at the 76th Station.
• The White House in Carson City is hosting a weekend cruises from 6 until 9 Friday and Saturday. Location is 402 E. Telegraph Street in downtown Carson City.
• Big news this weekend is the start of Hot August Nights Friday and Saturday in Virginia City. Things get going at 8 a.m. and even thought registration is sold out there is still a lot to see. Each day ends with a cruise from 4 until 5 p.m. through Virginia City.
• Down in Sparks the Off Road Warehouse has the End of Summer Party. Runs from 9 until 3 p.m. and several things are going on for those present. The store in Sparks is located at 40 Victorian Avenue, a few blocks east of McCarren.
• Saturday, starting at 6 p.m. is when the Reno EVO Club meets at the Century Theatre located at the south end of town. From there they’ll cruise to Carson City then return going back through Virginia City.
• Sunday has the next event Hot August Nights event but this one is at the Bonanza Casino, on North Virginia Street. It’s “Cruisin’ for the Cure” to benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
• There are two meets Sunday that both start at 10 a.m. Reno Cars & Coffee meets by the Human Bean Coffee stand located by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lane,
- Not far away Reno Jeeps & Coffee meets at the Human Bean stand located at 3915 South McCarran at the corner with Longely Lane.
RACING (4-WHEEL):
• Saturday night is when Top Gun Drag Strip has $5 Grudge Match Racing. Gates open at 4 p.m. and it costs $20 to race as many runs as one can.
• This weekend Lovelock celebrates its founding with Frontier Days. The Lovelock Speedway has racing Friday and Saturday nights with the NAPA IMCA tour present. Saturday also has a demo derby to help round out the show.
RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):
• E Street MX Park has the next round of its SXS series on Saturday. Then it’s open practice for motorcycles frm 8 until 1 p.m. Sunday using the front and back tracks.
• MMX is also busy as on Thursday, from 8 until 1 p.m. they have practice on the Sand and Kid’s tracks. Saturday’s practice is from 8 until 1 p.m. on the Main, Sand and Kid’s tracks. Sunday’s practice is from 8 until 2 p.m. with the Vintage track added to the mix.
• Unfortunately REP Racing MX didn’t list any practice times for Riverfront, Prairie City and Fernley Sandbox. One probably needs to check their Face Book page or call the hotline at 1-775-265-7223 and hopefully it’s been updated.
• REP Racing is offering an opportunity for anyone that is an experienced dozer operator. If interested please e-mail them at the address on the poster.
RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):
• Many series are taking a brief break due to the Olympics however some are still racing.
• Thursday and Friday are pretty empty but one can catch up on www.floracing.com or www.youtube.com, www.dirtvision.com, www.dirtfan.com or www.mavtv.com.
• Saturday TruTV at 6:30 a.m. has MotoGP Sprint race from Silverstone, England.
- Peacock/IMSA.tv has qualifying from the IMSA Weather Tech Sportscar qualifying from Road America.
- Fox Sports 1 at 6 p.m. has ARCA Racing from the Elko Speedway in New Market, Minnesota.
• Sunday gets off to an early start at 4:30 a.m. when TruTv airs the MotoGP race from Silverstone. Amazing how fast these racers go and haw far over they lean their bikes.
- Peacock and CNBC at 3 p.m. broadcast the IMSA Weather Tech Sportscar Championship round from Road America.
That’s it for this weekend. Should be another hot one so be careful in the heat. Will be a great time to meet car people or enjoy Frontier Days and the races in Lovelock.
OTHER RACING NEWS:
• Just over a week ago the Over The Hill Gang as well as the off-road motorcycle family lost one of their own when William R. Whalen passed away. He was a local racer as well as a Nevada Air National Guard veteran.
His friends plan to celebrate his life at a reception held on the Air Guard base. They ask that you RSVP if you plan to attend.
• Davey’s American Racing is found on Face Book. His focus is on western oval tracks as well as national series.
He recently started his broadcasts so check Face Book around 6 p.m. Wednesday.
