LOVELOCK SPEEDWAY & WATERCROSS WEEKEND

RENO, NV (JULY 21) — Lovelock Speedway had the next round of its season with a two-day show this weekend. Despite some occasional light rain the show went on.

Since Saturday was NAPA Night at Lovelock Speedway the features had a NAPA Pace Truck.

Since it was NAPA Night at the races there was a NAPA t pace truck that led the pace lap for each of the main.

Saturday’s first feature was the Gen-X class. Only three cars took the green and Kent Knisley took the point only to spin in Turn 2.

After that Cooper Lee was on point while Knisley gave chase. He would spin again then charge toward the front.

In the final laps of the Gen-X race Kent Knisley challenged leader Cooper Lee, who won the event

Eventually Knisley challenged for the lead only to pull onto the infield due to car problems. This gave the victory to Lee, who ran a steady race.

Next up were the IMCA Northern Sportmods and five of them took the green. First on point was Shaun Merrit with Tom Duncan giving chase.

The IMCA Northern Sportmod main was highlighted by a race lone duel for the lead between Shaun Merritt (77) and Tom Duncan.

Their duel would continue for the entire race. Despite closing Duncan wouldn’t be able to get past and Merritt won this feature with Colton Blankenship ending up third.

When the Dwarf Car feature began Bryan Phinney jumped into the lead. His time on point was short as Mikki Beuchat soon swept by him.

Dwarf Car winner Mikki Beuchat sweeps by early leader Brian Phinney.

For the rest of the race Beuchat was on cruise control and at the checkered flag had an almost straight away lead on runner up Robert Duncan.  At the end Phinney fell back to third while Courtney Duncan ended up fourth.

When the Hobby Stock main began Kent Knisley was on point with Santiago Villanueva giving chase. Behind the leaders Tom Haxall was moving toward the front.

There was a caution when Villanueva hit a tire in Turn 2. There was a long caution as his car had to be towed to the pits.

Tom Haxall would take the lead after chasing David Carrera Jr.

When the green waved again Knisley and David Carrera Jr. led the charge. Unfortunately Knisley spun out of the lead in Turn 4.

Now Carrera was on point but racing through Turn 4 Haxall took over the lead. Behind him Jeff Elerick Jr. was closing the gap.

Tom Haxall is challenged by the eventual winnere Jeff Eleerik Jr.

The final laps of the race was a duel for the lead between  leader Haxall and Elerick. In the final laps Elerick was able to get the lead but they were almost side-by-side at the checkered flag.

There were a varied bunch of cars, trucks and other types. During the meet entries were judged and later trophies were handed out.

• There was a very different type of race this past weekend. From Friday through Sunday the Wild West Watercross was at the Sparks Marina.

One of the many starts for the Watercross event.

It’s a Jet Ski event and the racers were launched in small groups. Before starting the jet skies are held in place by another person until the green flag was waved.

The Water Cross racers negotiated a slalom course on the Sparks Marina.

After being launched the racers negotiated a slalom course marked by blue or gray buoys. Tight turns with water flying around the racers plus noise made this quite an event.

This event ended the series for this year. But one of the officials mentioned they plan to return next summer.

Several locals participated and for results please check, www.Iraceready.com then look for Wild West Watercross. The series website can be found at, www.wildwestwatercross.com.
