LOVELOCK, NV (June 22) — Despite the heat the Lovelock Speedway had two days of racing this weekend. On Saturday, in addition to the two classes present the Sierra Nevada Sprint Car series visited the track.
Car counts were a little low as the IMCA Touring series was in Tonopah this weekend. But there were Hobby Stocks and Gen-X to round out the show.
After getting things going the sprint cars went out and qualifying. Grasen Ternora posted fast time followed by Preston Henderson and Brandon Tenora with Trey Walters fourth.
All three classes then did their heat races. Part of that was held up until the sun went down behind the hills as the sun would be right in the driver’s eyes as they exited Turn 4.
When the green started the Hobby Stock feature Yancy Shupe was on point. However he slid up in Turn 2 and giving the lead to Andy Damon.
There was a brief caution for debris and when the green waved again Damon took off with Kent Knisley giving chase. Working his way through the pack was Tom Haxall, who won Friday’s feature.
Soon there was a three-way duel for the lead then Haxall took the point exiting out of Turn 4. Another caution slowed things but when the green waved again Haxall led the charge.
At the checkered Haxall won for the second time in the weekend. Knisley was second followed by third place Andy Damon.
After climbing to the top of his car and celebrating, a very happy Haxal climbed down.
When asked about the race he said, “I’m really tired that was a hard work out there. The track is awesome, I’m just not used to running on such a short little track. The line was tough, a little bumpy but it was fun.”
Then he thanked his girl friend and the Last Tree Garage, which is his and builds cars like he races.
When the Gen-X feature began Joseph Cook took off and left everyone in his dust. Later he was involved in a tangle with Wade Kinsley as both of them ended up at the bottom of Turn 2.
Unfortunately that ended Cook’s night as he car was towed to the pits. When the green waved again Jorden Riley took off and left everyone in his dust.
After a spell he started lapping cars. Just as we was going to lap Wade Kinsley things almost changed the outcome.
Unknown to Riley, that’s when Kinsley was heading to the pits. Somehow Riley managed to miss him and was able to keep going.
At the end Riley scored the victory. Corre LaFrance ended up second with Blake LaFrance third and Danny Damon finished fourth.
After winning Riley said, “I don’t know if Cook broke another axel or was getting too loose in the corners. I’m not quite sure what happened. The track was astounding and it’s fun.”
Asked about his near miss with Kinsley he said, “The was hair raising. It too me everything I could do not to hit him. I don’t want to fix that car as it will end up at my house again.”
Then he thanked Pape Machinery, Old Iron Powder Coating and his family for their support.
Now it was time for the main attraction, the Sprint Car feature. The field lined up on the main straight for introductions just as some of the lights went out.
Took a little bit however once the lights were back on the field was pushed off. Then they formed up and headed for the green flag.
Trey Walters led the charge but being him Preston Henderson and Nick Purdy tangled. Both cars were rolling and flipping from the contact.
Henderson ended up on his wheels by the Turn 1 wall while Purdy’s car wound up on its side at the bottom of the turn. The red flag came out stopping the race while track officials and emergency personal rushed to the scene.
Both drivers were able to get out their racers and it was a testament to the safety gear and other safety things that go into this type of open wheel racing. Fortunately neither driver appeared to be injured in the crash.
It took some time to get both cars towed to the pits. Once that was done the survivors formed up and get ready for the restart. Once again Walters took off the left everyone in his dust.
Eventually he caught a pack of four cars but trying the outside actually slowed him down. Then he started passing the one car at a time.
In the end Walters almost lapped the entire pack and claimed the victory. Wade Taylor was second followed by the Ternora’s with Grasen third and Brandon ending up fourth.
After scoring the win Walters said, “We started on pole so key was getting into Turn 1 first. That’s the key as once we get into 1 first it’s all-good. After that it was cruise, take care of tires and hammer down.
“When I went high was trying to get around some cars but it slowed me down When you get up to those cars just got to do it one car at a time pass as you can’t sit behind them or the other guy is going to get you.”
Then he thanked Dusty Rose Ranch, Larry and Linda, Sugar Mountain Transport, BRMS Hoses and Snap on Tools.
Next stop for the Sierra Nevada Sprint Car Series is July 4th and 5th at Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon.

• On Friday there was another cruise-in at Summit Racing in Sparks. The event is working to be what it once was although the car count this time was on the low side.
These cruise-ins don’t happen every Friday so I’m including the schedule. Hopefully they can return these to what they used to be.
• Saturday is when the annual Women with Wheelz happened. As usual there was a varied mix of cars on display.
This year the program was moved from Viginia City to the west parking lot at Baldini’s Casino. Location is by the intersection of Mill St. and Rock Blvd.
• Sunday is when the latest Brunch ‘N Classics car meet was held. Northern Nevada Classics puts on the show and the location is in the west parking lot of Baldini’s Casino.
As expected there was quite a varied group of cars and trucks on display. Always a good turn out even on hot days.
OTHER RACING NEWS:
• Trucks & Tacos of Northern Nevada meets at 6:30 on Tuesday. This week they will be at Taqueria Mendoza located at 5055 Sun Valley Blvd.
• Wednesday is another cruise-in at the Sparks A&W. Things start at 5 p.m. and features music, raffle and some great cars to look at. Location is across from Reed High School on Baring Blve.
• On Saturday, starting at 4 p.m. there will be a cruise to honor David Zeigler, who was involved with local car groups. Meet at Sparks A&W and the cars will parade through Sparks.
• Davey’s American Racing is found on Face Book. His focus is on western oval tracks as well as national series.
He recently started his broadcasts so to check Face Book around 6 p.m. Wednesday.
