RENO, NV (June 9) – Well summer is in full swing and there were two very different car meets Sunday. One was for all types of vehicles while the other was for one brand and its many models.
• Any Cars & Coffee meet has variety as its theme and this one was no exception. There was the usual Corvette row with different models of this American Sports Car.
Also on display was a pair of Fords from two different eras. One was a Mustang while the other was a restored late 1940’s sedan.
Over in another row was a late 1940’s era Mercury sedan.
One person bought a 1959 Bug Eye Austin Healey Sprite his grandfather bought in England then later brought to the states.
Keeping with the variety theme one youngster parked his miniature truck in a parking space so it was on display as well.
Another owner has a fishing rod mounted on his car. That way he’s already to stop where there might be good fishing.
• Over in Mid Town the VDUB Hub of Northern Nevada and Door Slammers combined to put on an all Volkswagen show and shine. If one is a VW fan this was the place to be as they had raffles, music, arts and vendors.
While there were a few present Charlie and Kathy Schopper had their immaculate red Karmann Ghia convertible on display.
“We’ve had the car about 15 years,” he said. “It’s a 1970 and it’s got something that very few of them have called an Auto Stick. Instead of having a clutch you just shift it automatically.
He added the car was sideswiped on the passenger side a few years ago. He had it repaired and it was repainted in the original color.
“The nose is just like band new, never been damaged. That was the first thing I looked for when I bought the car to see if it had been smashed in because 99 percent of them are.”
When asked how it is to drive he said, “It’s great, goes down the road just like any modern car. Comfortable to drive, has great brakes, great steering. And I think the car only has about 70 thousand miles on it.”
His wife added, “We take it to Lake Tahoe.”
“We drive to Lake Tahoe in the summer time with the top down, it’s a great car for that,” he said.
Then Kathy said, “We’ve won a few awards with it and we just have fun with it.”
“We’re not trophy hunters, we just have a nice car. Actually we have four cars and this is best one of the four,” he said.”
He’s kept the car stock and it even has an 8-Track player that still works.
On display were about every type of van one could imagine from basic to some with poptops and camper interiors.
And of course there were a large amount of Beetles sporting various paint jobs and additions like roof top racks for luggage and other things.
The meet itself was to benefit the Canine Rehabilitation and Cat Sanctuary. These people help animals that are in need.
REPORTER’S NOTE: Due to a medical situation I was unable to report Rattlesnake Raceway’s annual Octane Fest. Should be back to normal by next weekend.
