Coordinating the event was Troy Redas, who explained what the Toy Run does and who it helps.

“I think this is going to be a bigger year and it looks like we got a full crowd. But I won’t know the exact ticket count until probably an hour after the event.

“We have lots of charities, we have about eight orphanages, about five or six schools that we help and about 100 to 200 hundred people that get on the list so it’s well over a 1,000 that we help. On top of it we’ll have about 100 thousand plus for cash donations to 20 charities. So we’ll be contributing in that way too.”

Inside Reno Harley Davidson people were registering and could get an event sweatshirt. There was also coffee and donuts for those attending.

At noon it was kickstands up and Santa led the Toy Run through Reno.

Asked about it Lance Freitas said, “This is our eighth year. Turn out looks pretty good, we got decent weather, it’s not raining or snowing like most years so we’re good.

“No body really displays what they are giving until they hand them over to the Old Slammers. We’re going to take North McCarran all the way around to Winco and meet up with them and that’s where we’ll display our toys.”

Up at the Northtowne shopping center the Old Slammers of Reno was holding it’s 10th annual Toys for Kids function. The event benefits the Children’s Cabinet.

There were a huge amount of toys that almost filled three vintage VW buses. And since the event went until 3 p.m. more continued brought i

Asked about the Children’s Cabinet she said, “We keep children safe and families together, so we serve children from birth to age 24 and their families providing programs and services at no cost so that they can thrive in our community in their neighborhoods. They help support our toy table, which provides holiday cheer and presents so share the holiday spirit with children and families in our community.

“We’re able to serve over a thousand individuals through this effort. We know the need in our community is growing so having Old Slammers out here for their 10th year bringing in toys to share with children and families is just amazing.”

This is just a portion of the toys donated to the Old Slammers Toys for Kids function.

She added that if anyone wants further information they should go to the website, www.childrenscabinet.org where all the contact information is listed. The website also lists ways people can get involved. To reach her personally please use, afoster@childrenscabinet.org.

While not president in the usual sense Alex Hernandez is kind of the leader.

Asked about the club he said, “We started around 2006 with friends and after that we’re just growing and growing every year. This is big, every years doing better and better.

“This is more cars, more people and more impressive. Every year Reno Cars and Coffee help us and he’s the one that brings most of the cars.

During the summer the club cruises starting around 6:30 every Friday night. It’s a casual and fun way to meet like-minded people there are no dues to belong to this club.

“Everybody brings kids and we’re just driving around downtown and at the end of the day. Like I said we cruise every Friday in the summer time and we just hang out. Its only vintage so far but some guys like water cooled cars show up with us but normally its more classic VW cars.”
