RENO, NV (Nov. 18) — The AMA Endurocross series ended its season at the Reno Livestock Events Center on Saturday. The event was the championship round for several classes.
The afternoon was taken up by practice sessions and qualifying races for several classes.
The evening program began with introducing the top pro riders. Then it was time for the JROTC from Sparks High School to present the colors.
Not it was time for racing and first up was the Expert Class where the top six advanced into the Pro motos.
First on point was Angus Riordan and chasing him Cody Miller and Anthony Johnson.
As the race progressed Riordan extended his lead and would win the race. Tim Apolle ended up second ahead of Johnson and Daniel Lewis.
After that it was time for Pro hot laps. A rider’s time set where they would be positioned in the first pro motos.
Next on track were the Veteran class and after the gate dropped Ray Amos was on point with David Kamo right behind him and sometimes beside him.
At the end of the first lap Kamo was on point and pulling away as he raced to the victory. Stephen Foord ended up second with Amos ending up third.
This clinched the class championship for Kamo, who ended up with 166 points
After winning Kamo said, “I think the rocks were kind of difficult. They threw you off a little bit so if you hit one of them you were kind of off rhythm . That was the most difficult part of the race. And now I’ve got two championships in a row.”
The Pros would race three motos and in the first Trystan Hart led with Colton Haaker right behind him. Eventually Haaker took the led and claimed the victory.
When the gate dropped starting the Novice race, Justin Leineweber was on point with Declan McCahill close behind. On the white flat lap McCahill took the lead and stormed off to claim the victory.
In the season’s points total McCahill was second just seven points behind Kael Widdicombe, who ended up third in that final race.
The Intermediates were next and Tanner Marks was on point at the start with Cole Cullins second. Behind them Etai Naor was closing in on Mike Aranda, who had gotten the lead.
Aranda had problems in the tire section and that allowed Naor to take the point. It also moved Cullins up to second ahead of Marks.
In the end Naor won the race but in the final points Cullins won the war and claimed the championship with 156 points.
Although Naor lives in Oak Park, California, he comes from Israel. After the race said, “I’ve been here for 16 years and it’s my first time on a track like this. Got the win, super stoked, super happy. I still can’t believe I finished first.
When the second pro moto began the field had been reversed from the first finish. Angus Riordan got the hole shot. He was eventually ran down and passed Cody Webb.
Chasing Webb was Colton Hakker, who worked his way into second place. At the checkered flag it was Haaker who took the victory in a race that set the starting gate for the final pro moto.
In the Club moto 52 years young Ray Amos ran away with the victory. Finishing a distant second was Tegan Warnick while Holger Dettman ended up third.
Now it was time for the Women’s Pro race. Point’s leader Rachel Gtutish only led Melissa Harten by three points when the night began.
On the start Gutish was on point with Harten close behind her. Eventually Harten took the lead as the chase continued. Eventually Gutish regained the lead and they finished in that order.
Gutish would claim the championship by only eight points. It’s been quite a fall for her as she was on the winning American woman’s team at the recent International Six Days Enduro.
Gutish was also riding hurt. As far as the ISDE she said the hardest part was going from 110 degrees in Argentina to 40 degrees, like it was in Reno.
After the finish she said, “I’ve got a grade 3 separated in my shoulder right now. I taped, took medicine, did everything I could but every time I hit the dumpster and every time I hit the rocks it hurt.
“The biggest challenge was coming up to those tires with all the riders down at the end, I was scared, not going to lie. I won the championship but all I had to do was to leave the gate tonight but where’s the fun in that.”
In the Junior main first on point was Seth Steiner, who led Fernando Pascal. As the obstacles scrambled the order Jack Williford assumed the lead followed by Kael Widdicombe and Steiner, who slipped back to third.
In the final laps Steiner took over second dropping Widdicombe to third. Up front Williford claimed the victory. He would claim the crown by only eight points ahead of Steiner.
Now it was time for the final Pro moto where the championship would be decided. At the start of the night Jonny Walker led Trystan Hart by a scant seven points and each of the previous two moto also added points.
When the starting gate dropped Hart led with Haaker and Walker close behind. Soon Cooper Abbott assumed second dropping Walker to third and the chase was on.
Eventually Hart got hung up on an obstacle and Abbot took over the lead. Now Hart was second followed by Hart, Cody Webb and Haaker,
On the white flag lap Hart retook the lead and later Haaker got second dropping Abbot to third. They finished in that order.
At the end a jubilant Hart had 140 points, just seven ahead or Walker, who had 140 while Haaker was three back with 137 points.
Before the trophies were handed out he said, “Two races, three races I did really good. Honestly I almost screwed tonight up but man I’ve been through so much for this, so many injuries. He (Abbott) wasn’t going to beat me but I needed him up front and honestly Cooper was my best friend in that moto.
“This is my first championship, got second like five times never won it. This series has put me through the absolute wringer and this race five years ago I dislocated my wrist, it’s been a brutal injury and honestly this makes up for it for sure.”
He later did a burn out on the podium platform. It was all smoke and smiles.
Then Hart lined up his trophies with one of the KTM team and posed for championship photos.
Now the series is over and everyone goes back home to enjoy the holidays. But next year, if all goes well, Endurocross will return. For further information please go to, www.endurocross.com.
