MRANN AT BLUE WING FLATS

BLUE WING FLATS, NEVADA (Oct 1) — Under a gray sky with some light showers Austin Serpa made a dramatic come from behind victory. The weather insured there was no dust although it was foggy at the top of the hills due to some low clouds.

Sunday was the big bike day and a 50-mile long loop facing the riders. As usual to be classed as a finisher one had to complete one full lap.

At the starting line there were 88 riders divided in their respective groups. The new AA Class had six riders and they compete for money.

Since this was a “Hare and Hound,” event the Hare launched first. Then after a couple of minutes the banner came down and the group launched.

For Austin Serpa things didn’t go well as he stalled his bike, got it started and took off dead last. From that point on he was charging.

Austin Serpa on his way across the lake bed as he won both the AA Class and was first overall on Sunday.

At a waterfall Serpa was able to catch and pass leader Russell Tonjum. At the end of the first lap Serpa was a head by over two minutes and at the end his margin of victory was over six minutes.

“The race was a blast, had a lot of fun,’ he said. “The course was perfect, not a bit of dust the weather. There were a couple of waterfalls but nothing too bad. Didn’t have any crashes, I stalled once.”

Then he thanked Carson City Motor Sports, everyone supporting him by buying his shirts, Arai Helmets and everybody that helps me.

For Serpa it’s a banner year as he’s been named to one of the teams the US is sending to this years FIM International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) that will be held at San Juan, Argentina.

Right now Serpa is working to secure funds so he can send his bike to the race site. He has t-shirts and is hoping for donations to help him get there.

Russel Tonjum heads across the lake bed. He finished second overall and second in the AA Class.

The early AA leader was defending MRANN points champion Russell Tonjum. However when at a water fall he chose to go up it while Serpa too the by pass and took the lead.

“The race was good but I couldn’t have caught him,” Tonjum said. “Serpa had me, he passed me fair and square. This waterfall we came up to it and there was an option lane.

“I tried to go straight up it, he shot around me, latched on as long as I could. I took a spill because of it. It was cool, super fun race the dirt made it incredible.”

Then he thanked Ryan Spelts, who lent him his Vegas to Reno bike, Gil with TBT, Layne at BVH, my girl friend and the club for putting on the race.

Third overall and the first Open Expert was Madden Kirsch.

Third over all was 16-year-old Madden Kirsch, the first Open Expert to complete both laps. He like the others enjoyed the fact rain eliminated dust although it was foggy going over some hills.

“It was a good race, it was wet the rain came out of no where and it’s the best race I’ve done in a while. A little fog but no dust. I would say not blowing your bike up on the lake bed was a challenge,” he said.

Then he thanked Carson City Motor Sports, MS Products, Gil with TBT, and the club for putting on a great race, and his parents.

In the future he plans on moving up to the AA class for some cash then maybe compete in the National Hare and Hound series.

The first amateur to finish both laps was Titan Allen and he finished ninth. Coming home 10th was the Dalton Kemp the first Over 30 Expert and 11th place was the first 4-Stroke Expert, Jesse Miller.

Titan Allen was the first amateur to complete both laps.

After taking the checkered flat as the first amateur to complete both laps Titan Allen said, “It was prime dirt, no dust at all, it was a little foggy up top actually but the single track on the mountains was so fun, nothing really hard.”

Then he thanked his father and club, MVDS, for helping him pit and everybody else.

The first Novice to complete both laps was Reese Inman.

Going down the list Reese Inman, who finished 22nd, was the first Novice to complete both laps.

“The course was pretty whooped out and really rugged, a lot of breaking bumps but some of the washes were really fun.”

Then he thanked his parents, grand parents, Bike Guys, Lawn Pro, and RMS.

Christina Courtney, a Woman’s Amateur racer was the highest placed woman.

Further down the finisher list was Christian Courtney as her 34th place made her the highest placed woman.

After racing the past few years in Saturday’s V Women class Carley Legenbauer rode her first Sunday race and was the highest placed Women’s Novice rider.

Behind her in 38th place was Carley Legenbauer, who rode in her first Sunday race. She was the Women’s Novice winner

Curtis Dice, one of the senior racers won the 50+ Expert Class.

Finally at the top of the age ladder was Douglas Gary. He rides in the Over 60 class and had an elapsed time of 3:35:08 for his two laps.

Over all for Sunday there were 88 riders at the starting line and only eight of them were DNF although several only rode one lap.

• Saturday was also a race day. It began with the Pew Wee race, that has several classes. When the banner dropped  31 started and 30 finished.

The next races has three classes and Jesse Miller, a Mini Exp rider won the overall while ninth place Sierra Koch was the V Women’s winner. A bit further down in 11th place Wyatt Mirell rode in 65 Expert class and the Bomber winner was 19th place Curtis Rice.
