FERNLEY, NV (Sept. 24) — The Reno chapter of the Old Timers hosted a motocross at Fernley 95A Speedway this weekend. The event was round 8 of the 2023 BBMX season and around 400 riders showed up so there were 23 motos plus one club moto.
When the second 250/450B and Pro gate dropped Casey Carmichael took off and left everyone his dust. Behind him Walker Thomas led the B group.
At first Ryan Hansen and Rich Thorwaldson were chasing Carmichael. At the finish Carmichael won the pro side while Thomas won both of the B motos.
After the finish Carmichael said, “The race was pretty good, the dirt’s pretty hard right nowand a little slippery. Riding around having fun.”
Then he thanked his parents, girl friend and Moto Source.
In motocross the final placement depends on how a rider finishes in both motos. If a rider wins both then the score is 2, like D winner Louis Hill Jr., but another combination might also give them the top spot.
The 250/450 C class is a good example of this. Rylan Padgett won the over all, finishing first then second in the second moto. The runner up was Jesse Miller who ended up fifth in the first moto but won the second so his combined score put him in the runner up spot.
We’ll start at the bottom of the age ladder in the 6 & Under 50cc Class. Wade Lavezzo used a second and first to take the overall victory. The 50cc 7 & Up and Open were a family affair as Ducati Fayet won the first and Suzuki Fayet took the Open.
Now we move up into the 65cc ranks where young riders learn how to shift as they ride and race. In the 9 and Under class Cullen Black was the winner. Billy Smith won the10 and Up class while Rowdy Cox was the open winner.
The 85cc Classes had one rider scoringt a double when Cooper Bergeron won the Open and Super Mini motos. The 2-Stroke Open ran with the Super Minis and Andrew Atangan won that class.
The other two 85cc motos were at the end of the day. Jevin Hubbard won the 13 and Up motos. Then Gaven Giomi not only won the 12 and Under motos but had the final checkered flag of the day.
For the Women there are three classes and two of them only had one rider. Lily Powning was the overall winner and the A Victor.
After the finish Powning said, “The track’s rough, very rough, muddy and slick. Just try to choose different lines and just squeeze the course.”
Then she thanked Pinnacle Heating, Sport Haus, Infinity Diving, Silver State Forklift and High Roller Custom.
In that same race the B winner Naomi Wyant was second over all. Behind her came the C group with five riders and Makayla Burns was the winner.
After her race, where she finished second overall, Wyant said, “It was good, it was a little muddy but the track is real rough. You just got to make sure your form is good, you can’t really relax too good or you’ll get all loose, wobbly and crash.”
There is also a Schoolboy and Collegeboy races with the first being the younger riders while the second is older riders. When the gate dropped Joshua Black was off and running followed by Chase Cannizzaro, who won the first Schoolboy moto and Rogen Hill.
In the end Black won the overall while Walker Thomas used a 2 then 1 finish in the Collegeboy motos to win that class.
There were a pair of multi-class motos with different age groups. They had the 30+, 38+, 45+ and 52+ classes in each moto.
In the D and C groupings Cody Mathis use a two-one finish to take the overall victory while runner up Corey Wardleigh was one-two in his two motos. At the top of the age ladder Bill Whalen ran solo in the 52+C Class.
Then it was time for the A and B, with one Master Class group in 30+. The overall winner was Logan Larive who had a battle with runner up James Swain. In fact they both shared wins but Larive won the second moto.
After the race Larive said, “That was awesome, I’m so tired, I don’t even know what to say. This was friggin awesome, good track, was rough out there.”
The B winner was Samuel Hitchborn who was chased by his friend and runner up Tony Lavezzo.
Describing his race he said, “It was pretty good just try to stay consistent. If you weren’t you were going to make a mistake because how choppy the track was. I kept smooth throttle and it got me to the end.
Then he thanked his parents and Tony Lavezzo for a good race.
In the second 52+ A moto Anthony Fagundes led first as Rich Thorwaldson went down right after the start. However Thorwaldson put on a hard charge and won the second moto after winning the first.
After sweeping the day Thorwaldson said, “I got taken out on the first corner, hit my front wheel, not his fault just racing. Rode good but don’t know where I finished.”
There were so many 125/250 rides the D Class was split with the first being a Consi moto where the top 5 transferred into the main. The first five were Reily Sheehan, Trent McKellip, Liam Spears, LoganTiearney and Jack Brown.
When the D final race began 20 riders took off. Up front it was Louis Hill Jr. that wont the day and race. Wyatt Powningt ended up second ahead of Wyatt McGehee and fourth place Preston Slater.
Moving up to the 250/450 group the second D moto was abruptly halted after a rider crashed into the face of the finish line jump. As the red flag came out to send the riders back to the starting gate the medics rushed to the scene.
Fortunately the rider eventually was able to get up then faced more questions from the medics. At the end his family took him back to the pits and his condition is unknown when this article was posted.
When the race started everyone made the first lap without incident. At the end Louis Hill Jr., scored his second victory of the day as he races in two classes.
Moving into the 250/450 C Class Rylan Padgett used a one-two finish to best runner up Jesse Miller, who won the second moto but had a five-one day.
There were two Big Bike Open Classes, on for those riding in C and D while the other was for the A&B riders.
In C and D Ben Phillips used 3 and 1 finishes to score the overall victory. Runner up Aidan Padgett had a two and four day while third place Hunter Roberts won the first moto but ended up fifth in the second.
Only four riders rode in the second A and B moto. Lotan Larive used a four and 1 record to score the overall win Runner up Corey Riddle was third in both motos while third place Scotty Guthrie had a six and 2 finish day.
There was a Club Moto and Tim Trainer won with Anthony Fagundes second. The third place rider was William Teninty and fourth place went to Bill Whalen.
