CARSON CITY, NV (Aug. 26) — The annual Outlaw Flat Trac motorcycle races returned to the Rodeo Arena at Fuji Park this weekend. It’s a two-day even5 full of action; a blizzard of heats and mains for amateurs and pro riders.
Every afternoon begins with a full amateur program. On Friday night there is a benefit race for the East Fork Fire Station, a volunteer group of fire fighters. This time the fire station donated the money the family of a Reno Policeman lost in the line of duty this past year.
Saturday afternoon begins with a full slate of amateur racers. It took 16 mains to get all of the riders on the track, not to mentions the heats and LCQs used to set the grids.
Before the opening ceremonies two long time supporters of the event were given special award plaques. One of them was Ricky Johnson, a former Supercross and Motocross champion.
The other was presented to Russ Brown, a Motorcycle Lawyer in appreciation of his sponsoring the even for the past six years.
Due to a shoulder injury to one of them the Marines were unable for the usual presenting of the colors. However all the riders lined up on the front straight and a singer gave a great rendition of the Star Spangled Anthem.
Then it was time for the heat races. After those concluded competed in “The Deuce.”
It’s an elimination series where two riders face each other and the winner goes to the next race. The month increases each round.
The final four get $300 each and after their race Michael Inderbitzin ended third after beating fourth place Kayl Kolkman.
The final round earned each rider $800 but the winner received $1,400 for their efforts.
Once the green waged Steven Bonsey took off with Andrew Luker giving chase. The finished in that order and on the victory lap Bonsey had his toddler son ride with him then he collected the winner’s prize.
After the race he said, “My son is Carson and he’s almost 2-years-old. Tonight was all about getting a good start, run smooth laps and don’t let anybody inside of you.”
Then he thanked A.J. Kirkpatrick for his sponsorship over the past seven to eight years. And sponsors X-Brand Goggles, Motion Pull, Jamie for baby sitting his son as well as his wife that lets him do this.
Two LCQ races followed. Those set the Holligan and Pro fields. Then it was time for the mains.
When the flagman launched the Runnin’ Buls race nine racers took off and headed for the first turn. Up front was Randy Bereman. That lead was short lived as by the next lap Michael Rodrigues was on point.
Rodrigues won the race followed by Curtis Peebles, who worked his way into second and third place Bereman. Most of the field was made up of Bultaco’s motorcycles that were last produced in 1983.
During the awards Rodrigues said, “That race was a blast, can’t ask for anything better. This bike is actually a ’78. We’re a small team and we come out here and get things done.”
Then he thanked Jeff Nelson, who is big help for the team.
The Hooligan class lived up to its name. The first start ended with a rider down then it was time for the second attempt.
After that green A.J. Kirkpatrick and Sam Cover led the charge. Then, probably due to contact a bike flipped so the race was stopped again.
This time a fight broke out between riders and supporters that rushed out from the pits. After that was settled everyone lined up again.
Once a rider went down, this time on the back stretch and the medics were summoned. Apparently he was only shaken up.
This time it was a single file start and everyone took off. At the end of the race another rider went down on the front straight but was okay.
In the end A.J. Kirkpatrick proved why being up front is best as he won the race. Sam Cover was second and Austin Helwig third.
Before the Crazy 110’s began Jim Holly had the field reverse directions to they’d be making right turns. Much of the fields had adults mounted on these small bikes.
The field was divided into Mice that started on the front straight and Cats that had little ears on their helmets and started on the back-stretch. Once the starter launched everyone the chase was on.
After a couple of laps, when the fastest cats caught the mice things got a bit confused. At the checkered Colton English from Reno won the race followed by Mason Smith, from Spreckles, California and Carson City’s Joey Berttrand.
Finally it was time for the 20-Lap Open Pro main. This is the final race of the evening and the longest at 20-Laps.
On the green Kayl Kolkman was on point but close behind was Michael Inderbitzin. Not far behind them came Andrew Luker and Steven Bonsey.
After a few laps Inderbitzin used an outside pass exiting the last corner and took over the lead. Still it wasn’t exactly a cake walk as the leader sliced his way through lap traffic.
After taking the checkered flags he stopped and had the flagman ride with him for the victory lap. The flagman put on a show of his own during both days.
The night ended when Inderbgitzin was on the podium with second place Kolkman and third place Luker.
After the podium ceremony Inderbitzin said, “Kayl is a great short tracker, probably the best on the West Coast. I was sitting back, just trying to be patient, watch what he was doing and learn.
“I seen he was getting off Turn 4 really good on the outside, then I think he found out I was right on him and then he dropped down to the bottom. Then I tried the outside and I found a lot of success with that. Was able to keep that in my back pocket and use it as the laps wound down. Got into the lead and never looked back.”
Then he thanked Pacific Tub and Tile, Frankie Morris of Morris Racing. Actually this one is for Frank Morris’ father for helping his program. He also expressed appreciation to 6D Helmets, Works Connection and X-Brand goggles.
Now the Fuji Park rodeo arena is quiet but at the end of August next year it should echo when the Outlaw Flat Trac races return.
REPORTER’S NOTE: There will be a photo gallery of the Saturday amateur winners after the results. Due to the President’s visit wasn’t able arrive when I usually do.
One interesting amateur main was in the 50cc 4-Stroke/Electric main. Three riders were there but the electric bike wouldn’t go and it too most of the race to reset the kill switch.
On the green 3-year-old Mallorie Schroeder took off then fell. That gave the lead and win to Sawyer Callender from Reno.
However young Schroeder was helped up and she continued to finish second. Clayton Yarborough from Sparks was able to get his electric motorcycle going and was credited with third place.
Friday and Saturday’s results for all classes will be posted on www.racenv.com and should be up in a day or so.
