RENO, NV (Aug.23) — Another jam-packed weekend with car shows, Show ‘N’ Shine events and a BBQ for Jeep fans. In addition there is racing in our region, over the hill and more on TV. Plus there is an event on Monday.
CAR MEETS:
• Saturday is going to be a very busy day to say the least.
- This is the week of Fallon’s Cantaloupe Festival and Rustoration Garage is hosting a car show at the Fair Grounds. There are many awards to be handed out. Check in is 8 a.m. with 2:30 p.m. awards presentation.
- Down in Carson City, starting at 10 a.m. there will be the 1st Annual Bow Tie Show & Shine. Location is Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill located at 3530 North Carson Street.
- In Reno, starting at 9 a.m., at Champion Chevrolet, located at 800 Kietzke Lane, Hot August Nights is having its Grand Finale Show-N-Shine. The grand champion will be awarded at 3 p.m. an every registered car gets a 2024 Event Series Decal.
- – That same day Nevada Jeep Club is having a pot-luck BBQ starting at 11 a.m. at Ross Gold Park in Carson City.
• Sunday, from 10 until noon, Sparks Cars & Coffee has its next meet. Location is by the Starbucks off Disc Drive.
• On Monday, from 1 until 2:30 p.m. there is a car show at the Ormsby Post Acute Rehab facility located at 3050 N. Ormsby Blvd. in Carson City. There is a raffle, free shaved ice and the hosts hope they can get cars to attend the event for the patients.
RACING (4-WHEEL REGIONAL):
• Only one race slated for this weekend; the 1st Annual Cedarville Stock Car Races. Hosts are the folks from Diamond Mountain Speedway and the location is the Modoc District Fairgrounds in Cedarville, California. Only three classes are racing; IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars and Street Stocks.
PRACTICE & RACING (MOTOCROSS & SIDE-BY-SIDE):
• Due to the Mammoth Motocross the MX track at Fernley 95A Speedway is closed for the next two weeks. It will reopen on the 9th and 10th of September,
• Biggest race in the region is the annual Mammonth Motocross that was postponed due to the amount of snow from this past winter. The event starts Friday, August 25, with Vet practice and starting Monday the Pee Wee riders get their chance.
Then the big bikes take over and run through Saturday, September 2. For further information, including schedule for each day, please check, www.mammothmountain.com>motocross>home.
• Locally the biggest race of the year is the annual Outlaw Flat Trac race at Fuji Park located at 601 Clear Creek Road. The track is inside the rodeo grounds and the gates open at 11 a.m., at least that’s what I was told.
- On Friday around 6 p.m. there is a special race between fire fighters and police. The event is to benefit a local fire agency.
- Each day begins with the amateurs qualifying, running heat races then mains. After that the pros take over.
- Saturday has the popular Running of the Bulls, plus the elimination event known as the Duce. The evening ends with the big pros feature. Each day is full of action and the weather should be great.
• Prairie City is having a double header for the NorCal and E Street SXS series. Saturday race is for points in both the E Street and Nor-Cal series. Points on Sunday only count for the Nor-Cal series.
– Prairie City, despite having the SXS race, should have Motocross practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
• MMX Racing will be busy. On Saturday there is practice from 9 until 2 p.m. on the main, sand and kids tracks.
- Sunday is when the track hosts the next round of the AMA District 36 MMX Grand Prix. One can get the full poster on Instagram. (Note the date on this poster is wrong, as the 28th is Monday and not Sunday.)
• Riverfront MX Park will have practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday and should have practice from 9 until 2 p.m. on Sunday. One might want to check the track’s FB page just in case.
• E Street MX Park will have practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on the front and back tracks.
RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):
• Thursday begins at 3 p.m. when Fox Sports 1 airs NASCAR Race Hub.
• Friday is when, at 4:30 p.m., the USA Network broadcasts the Xfinity race from Daytona. This week NASCAR uses the road course.
• Saturday begins at 7 a.m. on Peacock when the broadcast Race Day Live. Then at 10 a.m. the network airs the Pro Motocross Ironman National from Crawfordsville
- At 1:40 p.m. www.imsa.tv broadcast IMSA Weathertech Sports Car qualifying from Virginia International Raceway.
- This marks the end of NASCAR’s regular season so drivers in the NASCAR Cup series are racing to keep their spot or make into the playoffs. The race is at 4 p.m. on NBC and drivers are racing on the road course.
• Sunday gets rolling at 5:55 a.m. when ESPN broadcasts the Formula 1 race from Zandvort. Now the summer break is over and the teams are aiming for the end of the season.
- At 11 a.m. the USA Network broadcasts the IMSA Weathertech Sports Car race from VIR. Then at 1 p.m. Fox Sports 1 airs the Craftsman Truck Series from Milwaukee.
- The day ends with NBC broadcasting the Indy Car race from Madison. They’re racing on a classic mile oval that’s older than the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
That’s it for this weekend. The buffet of car meets is overflowing so there is a lot to choose from. Maybe some time these events could be spaced out a bit.
