DWARF CAR NATIONALS AT AMERICAN VALLEY SPEEDWAY

QUINCY, CALIF. (May 13) — The Western States Dwarf Car National Series visited American Valley Speedway this weekend. It’s usually the biggest event of the season and started the season for the track.

The Dwarf Car field and local cars prepare to do parade laps to honor the memories of Dave Richardson, Leroy Kay, Todd Damron and Race Shelton.

Right after the National Anthem the entire field of Dwarf Cars, plus a few Sport Mods, lined up on the front straight. Their parade laps paid homage to Dave Richardson and Leroy Kay, who the event is named after, as well as Todd Damron and Race Shelton.

The event is named the Dave Richardson and Leroy Kay Memorial.

Once that was completed it was time for the program to begin. And the cars grouped up for a series of heat raced.

The Dwarf Cars has three divisions; Sportsman, Veterans and Pros. Each group had fast dashes the Pro class also had a B Feature.

The Sportsman Fast Dash was won by Teagan Fischer, in the Veteran Division is was Tony Margott while Nick Velasquez was the Pro Fast Dash winner.

First to get the green were the Sportsman drivers. Soon after the race began there was a yellow, caused by a car stopped in Turn 3.

Teagan Fischer swept both Sportsman A features as well as her heat races.

On the restart Brenden Shrum was on point but behind him Teagan Fischer used an outside pass in Turn 2 to take second. Before the chase really got started there were a pair of cautions that kept the field bunched.

On the restart Shrum took off with Fischer giving chase. Three more cautions slowed the race pace but in the end Fischer claimed the win, giving her a sweep for the weekend. She was followed by Mark Pipe and Shrum, who ended up in third.

A delighted Teagan Fischer after winning Saturday’s Sports main. That gave her a sweep of the two day event.

After the race Fischer said, “It’s racy out there. The track’s is really good and there’s one really good line to run and I stuck with it and it helped me out for the whole race.”

Then she thanked D&R Chassis, TFC Construction, her father Norm Scott Anthony, who made this all possible.

Next was one of the support races. When the Mini Stock main began it appeared J.R. Svensson was in the catbird’s seat.

There was a caution for a slow car on the backstretch and that’s when Sevensson’s car began to smoke. The cause ended his night.

Megan Hull scores her first win in the Mini Stock division.

On the restart Andi Hast took off with Megan Hull following him. On the final corner of the race Hast made a slight mistake that slowed him down a bit and Hull used an outside pass to score the victory, her first ever.

After winning her first Mini Stock main a delights Meagan Hull poses for a victory photo.

Later she said, “I saw him make the mistake. I also want to thank my family for their support.”

When the Veteran’s A Feature began Tony Margott was on point with Glenn Sciarani giving chase. Soon Tony Margott took over the lead and was being chased by Ronnie Williams, Sciarani and Kevin Bender.

In the Veteran’s A Feature winner Ronnie Williams (40) chases early leader Tony Margott.

The top two began to separate themselves from the rest while Sciarani and Bender were dueling for third.

Up front the leaders began a side-by-side duel for the lead. Eventually Williams took the point and began to slowly pull away.

At the checkered “Monster,” Ronnie Williams won followed by runner up Bender with Tom Morley ending up third.

Ronnie “Monster” Williams after winning Saturday’s Veteran’s feature.

“This car was hooked up and this was our kind of track tonight,” Williams said. “It was a fun track and was a blast. I was just being safe, I knew I had a good car so I had it covered.”

Then he thanked Derek Rossi, sponsors and all the fans.

The next support race was the Northern Sports Mods. Brittney Nieman led the charge but spun and that caused a restart.

Next time the green waved two cars tangled. Once that was sorted out racing resumed. Two more cautions would slow the race pace.

In the Sport Mod feature Tyler Rodgen uses the inside line to take the lead from Paul Stephens.

Up front there was a duel for the lead and Tyler Rodgen used the inside line to take the point and score the victory while Paul Stephen was the runner up.

While the A feature for the Sportsman and Veterans were 20-laps the Pros ran a 30-lap main. Before the final race there were so many pros a B Feature was run and Michael Tobiason won with Mike Grenert second.

On the green Nick Velasquez was on point with Joe Frock right behind him. An early spin in Turn 1 brought the first caution.

After the restart there was a three-way duel for second between Frock, Dylan Shrum and another car. Their racing was allowing leader Velasquez to escape.

For several laps Nick Velasquez (41) and Dylan Shrum dueled for the lead. Shrum would crash out and Velasquez won his first national event.

Shrum would take over second and soon start to challenge for the lead. Eventually Shrum took the point but with only a lap or two to go a crash in Turn 3 brought out the red flag and everyone stopped.

Turns out one car wound up part way on top of the Turn 3-4 k-rail. Thankfully the driver was uninjured but the same couldn’t be said for his car.

On the green both Velasquez and Shrum resumed their duel for the lead and victory. Eventually Velasquez took the lead and just before the white flag as to fly, when they were roaring into Turn 3 Shrum tried to avoid contact.

The result was his car swapping ends and going hard into the back stretch interior wall. Once again the race was red flagged.

After the race Velasquez said, “I mean I was screwing a whole bunch and Dylan was right there. We were racing hard, he races hard and me and him always race clean. I’m sorry Dylan.

“He came up to me and we talked and I’m really sorry about that.”

Nick Velasquez scored his first national victory when he won Saturday’s Pro A Feature.

Asked about the track he said, “The track was pretty technical, I didn’t really know there was a top until Dylan passed me then I went up there. The track was really wet at the bottom of 1&2 and 3&4 and that’s where stuck and where the car liked it.”

Then he thanked Haas Automation, DRI, Bonded Clutches and Cables, 805 Diesel, No Limit Fabrication and GFO.

Later both Velasquez and Shrum talked and apparently they agreed it was a racing incident so no hard feelings between them.

(A video taken by the live stream at the track showed there was no contact between both cars.)

For Velasquez the race was his first national victory and he was followed by Danny Wagner and third place Joe Frock.

After the dust settled there was a BBQ and awards ceremony. Three drivers earned Hard Charger awards and they were; Sportsman – Erica Endicott, Veterans – Mike Reader and in Pros it was Anthony Pope.

• There was a full program Friday night. Teagan Fischer began her sweep of the weekend by winning her heat and the Sportsman A Feature.

In the Veterans A Feature the winner was Dan Geil while in Pros it was Tomm Velasquez. There were two of the track’s regular classes running where Christopher Nieman won the IMCA Modified race while Tom Haxall was the Hobby Stock winner.
