RENO, NV (3-26-23) — Northwestern Nevada is an area car collectors like. One reasons is the air tends to be dry, which is better than humid air, which can cause rust in other areas.
While others have collections, some only have a few or a couple of classic cars. An owner up at Stead field has a gem; a MG TF 1500 actually.
The model was built from 1953 to 1955 and only 6,200 were built. The “1500” came from having a motor that was bored out to 1,466 cc’s that gave it an increase of power.
It all started when Erin S. (Wants his last name to be confidential), wanted to buy a hanger. He did find one but there was a catch.
“When I bought his hanger it had an airplane in it, an RV8 with a Mazda engine. I just wanted the hanger and didn’t want the plane but the guy wouldn’t sell me the hanger without the plane,” he said.
Once the hanger was his, the next step was to find a buyer for the aircraft. He eventually found a doctor in Oregon he could sell the plane to and in exchange got the MG that was part of a collection.
“He drove the MG down here in a covered trailer. Then we unloaded the MG, took the wings off the airplane as it was an experimental and loaded it into the trailer”, he said.
Erin has a Cessna that will fit nicely into his hanger and is located close to the Oregon coast. He bought the hanger so he could bring it here where the air is drier as rust won’t be a problem. Best part is that it will fit nicely in his hanger even with the MG parked there.
Asked about the car he said, “It’s a nice car and I got it in June. They only did this style for two years and in a TF the headlights are part of the fender while before they were separate.
“I’ve redone the brakes they’re all drums and now it stops better. It’s like buying parts for a Volkswagen and I got the parts through Moss Motors,” he said.
The MG is fully restored, has new SU Carbs and the motor runs smoothly. Now he’s considering finding a way to take it shows.
“I’m thinking about putting in shows and that’s why I want to get a flat bed trailer. I think the car is 13 feet long,” he said.
Looking into the future there is a chance he might sell, if the right offer comes along. For now however his goal is getting a trailer so he can take the car meets and shows.
If any of the readers knows where Erin can get a small flatbed trailer, they can leave him a message at, 775-636-4684. .
