RENO, NV (March 22) — Well March came in as a lion and looks like it’ll go out with a roar. However green flags are about to start waving as well as starting gates and banners dropping.
Yes, spring not only brings flowers but racing as well.
CAR MEETS:
• Fallon Cars N’ Coffee gets the weekend rolling with a Saturday meet. Times are 9 to noon and the location is The Alley Bar.
• Sparks Cars & Coffee will host it second meet of the month at the Starbucks off Disc Drive in Sparks. These meets start at 10 a.m., usually have a good mix of cars and, best part, is if it is chilly Starbucks has good hot chocolate.
• Technically this isn’t a car meet but wanted to get this out. Saturday is the 9th annual Ride for Soldiers. It all begins at 9 a.m. by the Veterans Guest House.
Then the second part, after the ride returns, is at Road Rider of Reno starting at 1 p.m. It’s a family friendly event with a lot of things happening. Should be a good time for a good cause.
• This coming Wednesday the annual Lockett Shows Reno Expo is at the Convention Center. Part of it is the Off-Road and Motorsports Expo. Great way to meet the off-road groups and there usually are some racing groups as well.
RACING (4-Wheel):
• Due to the weather two tracks will host play days this weekend. On Saturday, starting at 10 a.m., Lovelock Speedway will have one as that track will operate this season.
- On Sunday, also starting at 10 a.m. Rattlesnake Raceway has their Play Day. The pit area is larger after a major clean up of the area.
- As a heads up Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, California has scheduled their Play Day for April 1. Hopefully the track and pit areas can be dried out a bit.
• If the road is okay the Northern Nevada Kart Club is having a Track Clean Up day on Saturday. Good chance to get the facility ready to go although the April 1st season opener was postponed.
RACING & PRACTICE (MOTORCYCLES):
Note: All these schedules are “weather permitting.”
• This weekend MRANN has the series second race of 2023. It’s the Wild Horse & Wild Pony Sprint Enduro. The Western States Racing Association teams up with AMA District 36 for the event. Rain or shine this event will happen.
– As usual Saturday has a full schedule starting at 8 a.m. with Family Sprints, the younger racers, Saturday Women and Bombers. Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. the big bike classes get their turns on a 48-mile long track.
• The motocross track at Fernley 95A Motorsport Complex is closed Saturday. But if all goes well, it’ll be open for practice from 11 until 4 p.m. Sunday.
– This next week there are two training sessions at the track. Thursday is for small bikes while Friday is for the big bikes. Good way to tune up a person’s riding skills as motocross season just started.
• Due to flooding Riverfront MX is closed this weekend as it Prairie City as they still have a bunch of work to get the track ready to go.
• On Friday MMX will have training for Minis. Not sure of the time so be sure to check their site. If the weather holds they should have practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):
• On Thursday at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub.
• Friday is when www.motorsportsondemand.com begins its coverage of the24 Hour Series – 12 Hours of Mugello. Qualifying begins at 6:25 a.m. that day.
• Fox Sports 1 at 7:30 a.m. has the NHRA Qualifying Show #1 from the Arizona Nationals.
• Saturday its back to Motor Trend at 2:40 a.m. when the have Part 1 of the 14 Hours of Mugello. Then at 11:30 the network broadcasts Part 2.
• This weekend NASCAR visits Circuit of the Americas (COTA) outside of Austin, Texas.
- Fox Sports 1 has a double header starting at 10:30 when the Craftsman Truck series takes to the track. Then at 2 p.m. the network airs the Xfinity race.
• This weekend the AMA Supercross series moves to the Seattle area and Peacock has the racing bill. At 1:30 they have the Pre Race show then at 7 p.m. the network airs the racing.
• Sunday starts at 9 a.m. when FOX Sports 1 has the NHRA Qualifying Show #2. Then at 4 p.m. they show the finals from the Arizona Nationals.
• At 10:30 a.m. CNBC broadcasts the MotoGP race from Portugal. These high-speed contests have some pretty intense racing and wild motorcycle skills by the riders.
• Then FOX picks up the NASCAR Cup race that starts at 12:30 p.m. when the teams are back on a road course at COTA. For this race NASCAR has gotten rid of the stage breaks so, with the exception of cautions, the event will run from green to checkered.

• For you Air Race fans ,general ticketing began the day this article was written and posted. Guess the response was so great the reservation system briefly went down but is up again. The last race ever is this September so a lot of people want to see this event.
• This coming Wednesday, the 29th of March, Hot August Nights is registering cars for this year’s event. It all starts at 11 a.m. and is at the National Automobile Museum.
• Daveys Amercian Racing is usually on at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. One can see the show on Face Book and get into the chat was well.
Davey covers national series as well as racing in the western United States. His focus is on oval tracks.
