RENO, NV (Jan. 22) — On Saturday those that race with Battle Mountain MX, or BBMX as it’s known assembled at Boomtown. The occasion was the annual awards ceremony and banquet.
As usually there was a large amount of trophies to hand out. There were also grand prizes that were raffled off as well as a bunch of goodies that were also part of the raffles.
As usual the trophy awards start with the youngest racers. Sadly Ducati Fayet wasn’t present as he is the 50cc, 6 & Under champion as well as the Open champion but Charlie Bagan was on the podium when he received his championship jacket and trophy for the 50cc 7 & Up class.
Next class is the 65cc where these young racers start shifting. Talon Baker won the 9 & Under title while Kalvin Roberts scored twice by winning the title in the 10 & Up as well as the Open classes.
The last small bike classes are the 85cc where riders will soon move into the big bike classes. Ryan Pacella is the 12 & Under champ while Hudson Losey scored a double when he won both the 85cc 13 & Up as well as the Open titles and Johnny Simpson won the Supermini crown.
Big Bikes came next and in the 125/250 classes Rylan Padgett won in D, Rogen Hill was the C winner while Zayne Bissell took the B Class. In the biggest bikes, the 250/450 classes, Aiden Padgett was the D champ, Rogen Hill topped the C group while Gabriel Marchant earned the B title.
Two of those riders scored doubles. Rogen Hill in Schoolboy while Gabriel Marchant also earned the College Boy Crown.
Various classes have experienced growth over the past few years. The three Women’s groups are also among those as more women like racing in their own class.
Emma Helming was the Women’s A champion for 2022 while Lily Powning earned the B crown and Anna McMillen was the champion in the C group.
For Powning it was a challenging year to say the least.
“It was a tough season, I had a broken foot but was back within a month for the next race for Riverfront,” she said. “I appreciate winning the title a lot as it’s really nice.”
Then she thanked her parents, brother and members of the crew. She also expressed appreciation for sponsors Chemical Heating and Air Conditioning, Infinity Lighting Services and Lakeside as well as others.
Moving into the Open Classes Tharon Lindekugel was the C/D champion while Gabriel Marchant scored his second title by winning the A/B Class.
Moving up the age ladder came the 30 + classes. Nick Hagan won in D while Samuel Hitchborn got the C title while Logan Larive scored a double when he won the B crown as well as winning in 2-Stroke Open and Tim Stone was the Masters champion.
Finally, at the top of the age ladder are the 40+ and 50+ Classes. In motocross some begin as youngsters and keep racing well into and past retirement age.
In the 40+ group Greg Brown was the D winner while Chris Padgett took the C Crown while Jason Simpson topped the B Class. At the top of the ladder Bill Whalen and Scott Jones were one-two in the 50+ C Class.
Finally it was time for the grandest prize of them all; a pit bike. After the ticket was drawn Glenn Kunkel and his son Luke were the delighted winners.
Before the trophies were handed out and after the Pit Bike was given away BBMX President and MC Tony Lavezzo gave special thanks to the sponsors of the banquet and series.
They are Big Valley Honda, Ayers, TESTA Motorsports, Reno Motorsports (RMS), MOJO Motorsports, Carson Motorsports, General Transmission, Fluid Dynamics (Hole Shot awards.), Moto-Source, Bad Touch, Evident, Mettle Brand Designs, Winnemucca MX, E-Steet MX, Fernley 95A, REP Racimg, OTMX and Gold Rush MX. These sponsors help keep the series going.
After the banquet Lavezzo was asked his thoughts on the 2022 season and what he sees for he upcoming season.
“I think last season went really well, we had an 11 round season, we had good turn outs through out even up to our last round,” he said. “Probably one of the proudest things is that we had a big turn out with beginners and big turn out with women. We’ve had good turnouts top to bottom we’re really looking forward to that in the next year. We’d like to keep that up and keep moving on.”
The 2023 schedule has already been released and again has a variety of tracks both in Northern Nevada as well as in Northern California. For further information on the series please check the website at, www.battlebornmx.com.
