NNKC CHAMPIONSHIP DAY & DOLAN CARS & COFFEE

STEAD, NV (Sept. 25.) — Sunday marked the end of the point’s season for the Northern Nevada Kart Club. So for them it was championship day and in Reno, the Dolan Toyota Dealership was the site of the largest Cars and Coffee gathering of the year.

Perfect racing weather greeted members and visitors at Desert Park Raceway. Several drivers clinched titles while others are waiting to see how the points fall out.

As usual the Kid Kart Class ran its main first. Jameson Judd was the first to complete all six laps.

Unfortunately this reporter wasn’t able to get Desert Park Raceway in time to see the Kid Kart Main, which was six laps. In the results they are not scored in the usual way but if they completed all six laps. On this day Jameson Judd was the first to do all six laps.

(Reporter’s note: I am using a picture of Judd from an earlier race.)

The were several close races and the Senior class, which started the day for the big karts was one of them. On the green Bryce Dickman was on point with Issac Bourque chasing him.

For a while the top three Dickman, Bourque and Giovanni L. Medina were close. Soon Bourque was catching the leader while they left Medina in their wake.

After running nose-to-tail for a while Bourque made his move. This happened after drafting down the front straight then using an inside-move at Turn 1 to claim the lead.

In the Senior Class feature winner Issac Bourque, after taking the lead, was chased by Bryce Dickman.

Dickman wasn’t about to give up and they raced the remaining laps close together and swapped places on the final lap. At the checkered flag Bouruqe crossed the finish line five 100ths of a second head of Dickman.

After the race Bourque said, “Honestly I didn’t think I was going to catch Bryce then I saw him make a mistake then “oh I’m back in it.” It’s always awesome when he comes up.

Asked about the final lap he continued, “ I messed up in 4 and I knew he was going to get me in 5. I was trying to defend in 5 but I knew he was going to make the pass. I let him pass knew he was going to be slow in turn 6 so that’s why I sent it in on the last lap.

Then he thanked Jeff Bryce and added this was his first Senior 206 victory and class championship.

Next up was the KA100/TAG race. As both classes race at the same time a staggered start is used. The KA class gets the green flag first then, after a short spell, the TAG group is launched.

First on point was Jack Schrady but Deeahme Malone wasn’t far behind him. Further back Adrik Owen was running solo in the TAG lead.

Deeahme Malone on his way to winning the KA100/TAG race.

Eventually Malone grabbed the overall lead but had Schrady not far behind him. They would have a see saw duel however at the checkered both ended up in that order. Behind them Owen left the other TAG racers in his wake and scored that groups victory.

After the post race weigh in Malone said, “This was the final race, I really wanted to end things with a bang. I wish every driver here good luck to this race and I hope they have fun.

“I couldn’t think how good this was, it was amazing. I’m glad that we had so many awesome drivers around here competing for like fun. I just want to thank everybody that participated here, including my friends, all my family and of course, my mechanic dad.”

Superstock/Tillotson was next up and this was another close point’s race. On the green Edward Atkins took off with Alec Beaudoin right behind him.

Early on in the Super Stock feature winner Edward Atkins was chased by runner up Alec Beaudoin.

For the first few laps they were nose-to-tail until Atkins began to slowly put space between them. They would finish in that order while Jimmy Johns ended up third

Later Atkins said, “Alec and I always run close I think today I had a couple of 10ths I could pull out and I just concentrated on being clean and smooth. So it kind of came around to me.”

Then he thanked Cole Nelson Racing, Cole Nelson and his wife Kelly, who was working the scales

The Junior II class had some tight racing as well as a close finish. When the green waved Andrew Hitchcock was on point with Cooper Perez and Brooks Anderline close behind him.

In fact, in the first few laps it was a six-kart train circulating the track. While several karts dropped out the most spectacular exit was just before the straight when one driver had a wheel sheer off and was sent across the track into the barrier.

That barrier had proved its worth over the years as it absorbs an impact and doesn’t create a hard stop for the driver. Fortunately the driver wasn’t hurt and as soon as they lifted his kart to the other side of the barrier the caution ended.

Up front Perez had problems that put him on the sidelines. Now Anderline, who has dominated the class, was second and the chase was on.

Junior II winner Andrew Hitchcock ended the season with his first win.

Lap after lap Hitchcock and Anderline tore around the track, many times nose-to-tail. They would finish in that order with Hitchcock reaching the finish just over 4 tenths of a second ahead of Anderline.

After the weigh in a delighted Hitchcock said, “First win of my career with a pretty good turn out and everything. Hard work, like to thank Cole Nelson Racing, Invader racing engines. Cole has been helping me with this whole thing.”

Asked if he knew how close Anderline was he said, “Every once in a while I checked back to get a grasp of my surroundings but about 25% of the time I knew where he was. I was just trying to drive as fast as I could and get my lines consistent.”

For most of the Heavy feature winner Brandon Walsh was chased by runner up Brandon Arace.

The Heavy class was the largest field of the day and when the green waved 16 karts took off. They soon broke into groups with Brandon Walsh and Brandon Arace disputing the lead while a three-kart train was following them.

Eventually the lead duo left everyone in their wake. Behind them Rachael Williams put herself into a solid third place.

On the final lap Walsh and Arace swapped places twice. At the finish Walsh had just a four tenths of a second lead over runner up Arace. Behind them Williams, the class points leader, ended up third and is probably the NNKC’s fourth female class champion.

Later Walsh said, “That was a great race, was just fun to be out here in Nevada.”

If the points play out Rachael Williams will be only the fourth woman to win a NNKC class championship.

Then Williams said, “Race was good and very stressful and was very nervous. Wanted to keep it clean and out for a Sunday drive. Thanks all of my pit crew, rough this morning as got a new axel. Couldn’t do it without them.”

Then it was time for the fast guys, the 125 Shifters. When the green lights went on, this class uses a standing start, Zach Rivera took off with Mitch Kennedy close behind him.

Sadly after five laps Kennedy had problems with his shifting linkage and had to exit the race. Up front Rivera was all alone in the lead.

Zach Rivera won the 125 Shifter main in dominating style.

At the finish Rivera scored the victory followed by Zeke Corson in second and third place Mike Faker. For Rivera this was a test session for a national event he plans to race in November.

“I’m setting for the Rock the Rio, we’re trying to run a national event with the shifter at Vegas in November,” he said. “So I want to get as much testing as I can. Been trying to test but it started raining out here but this weekend was going to be good weather so I ran.”

In two weeks the NNKC hosts the IKF Grand Nationals and when asked if he’s going to compete Rivera said, “We’ll see about it. We’re thinking about it not sure if it’s going to be 206 or shifter yet but my eyes are really on the Rock the Rio event. That event in Vegas is on my mind right now.

Then he thanked his father Rodney, Nevada Kart Sport and gave a special thanks to Mike Faker as he’s one of the biggest sponsors.

The Junior 1 class had the honor of ending NNKC’s 2022 point’s season and eight of these youngsters took the green. Up front Kayden Williams took the point followed by Jeremiah Nobles and Jeremy Heath.

While Williams basically left every in his wake the battle was for second between Nobles and Heath. Lap after lap those two were nose to tail.

Kayden Williams had a run away victory in Junior I. This class closed the 2022 Point’s season for NNKC

At the finish Williams took the victory and probably clinched the class championship. Behind him Nobles ended up second a scant three tenths of a second ahead of Heath.

Asked about he handles such a huge lead Williams said, “If you’re in the lead and like no one is close or drafting you have to like use your head, feeling if the corner is slippery or not and just got to think about it. Thanks Cole Nelson Racing, Invader and all my families and Great Uncle Jay for getting my motor.”

This probably will clinch the Junior 1 title for Williams. If so he and his mother could be the first mother-son class champions in the history of the NNKC.

Next up for the club is the IKF Grand Nationals on the weekend of October 9th. Actually the event runs for a full four days with the finals happening on Sunday. The event will bring kart racers from across the west.

• The annual Dolan Cars & Coffee was held Sunday at the Keitzke dealership. There was a huge turnout of cars and trucks as well as a few motorcycles.

Cars stretched as far as the eye could see at the annual Dolan Cars & Coffee meet.

This reporter is guessing there may have been over five hundred cars on display. The cars filled all the area in front and on the south side of the dealership.

All types of cars and trucks were at the Dolan Cars & Coffee meet. This included these Corvettes parked in front of the Dealership.

One interesting view was a small group of Corvettes with the Toyota Logo on the building behind them. Thankfully Costco allowed spectators the use of its west parking lot.
