RACING PREVIEW: SEPT. 15 TO 18

RENO, NV (Sept. 14) — As summer winds down tracks are starting to end their seasons yet there is still more racing to come. There are car shows and cruise-ins to enjoy as well as events on TV.

 CAR MEETS:

This week is the 12th Annual Cruz ‘N Shine at the Topaz Lodge and Casino.

• Down at the Topaz Lodge and Casino, south of Gardnerville, there is the 12th annual Cruz ‘N Shine, a Show & Shine car show. Starts on Thursday and runs from 8 until 3 each day with a BBQ on Friday evening.  

This Friday is the last Fernley Main Street cruise.

• Friday is the final Downtown Fernley Cruise Night all types of cars are invited. Cruise starts at 6 p.m. goes from the Moose Lodge, out to the roundabout then returns. Be sure to honk at the spectators. 

Fallon Cars & Coffee has a meet starting Saturday morning.

• Saturday is a busy day for car fans. Fallon Cars & Coffee gets the day rolling with a cruise in at the Alley Bar, located at 1555 S. Taylor Street. The event runs from 8:30 until 12:00ish and all types of cars and trucks are welcome. 

Rail City Casino on Saturday has a Rock A Billy Rat Rod car show.

      Over at Rail City Casino in Sparks, from 4 until 9 p.m. there is the Rock A Billy Rat Rod & Classic Car Show & Shine. There are prizes and entertainment. 

Testa Motor Sports in Gardnerville is having a benefit Parking Lot Party on Saturday.

      To the south in Gardnerville Testa Motorsports is having a benefit Parking Lot Party. Starts at 3 p.m. and there is a live band, food truck as well as raffle prizes. 

On Sunday, starting at 10 a.m., Reno Cars & Coffee has its second meet of the month.

• Sunday, starting at 10 a.m. is the next Reno Cars & Coffee meet. Location is the Human Bean Coffee Stand by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lane. Good freeway access to the event. 

RACING (REGIONAL):

The biggest event in our region is the annual STIHL National Championship Air Races north of Reno at the Stead airport. There are seven classes racing as well as displays in the air and the military display area.  

It’s a full day of flying by military jets as well as the races them selves. Unlimiteds and Jets race in the fastest motorsport event on the planet. For further information please check their website at www.airrace.org 

This is the final $5 Friday for this season. For $20 one can race and if a driver cuts a perfect light they get a gift card from Summit Racing.

• Top Gun Dragstrip ends its season this weekend and things get going with the final $5 Friday. To race as many passes as one wants it only costs $20; cut a perfect light and one gets a Summit Racing gift card.  

Top Gun Drag Strip ends its 2022 season with two full days of racing.

Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. there is a full day of racing with the Junior Dragsters and ET Classes. In addition there is the King of the Track races as well as Mopar VS the World Series. 

Summit Raceway in Elko ends its season with the Gold Rush. A two-day event with racing Friday and Saturday.

• To the east Summit Raceway in Elko ends its season with the two-day Gold Rush Races. Gates open at 3 p.m. with racing beginning at 6 p.m. each night.

A driver’s combined finishes will determine if they are a Gold Rush winner. They ask the drivers be signed in by 5:15 each night as the driver’s meeting begins at 5:30. Should be a wild two nights of action.

• To the south Score International is running the Baja 400 this weekend and all classes are included. Event runs from Thursday through Saturday. Several Northern Nevada riders and some drivers will be competing in this event. 

On line registration for the IKF Grand Nationals is now open. Racing will be at Desert Park Raceway.

• On line registration is now open for the IKF Grand Nationals that will be held at Desert Park Raceway. The event runs October 7-9 with the finals on Sunday.

Should be a good turnout as winning drivers take home a Duffy, or national championship trophy. 

RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):

• The motocross track at Fernley Ninetyfive A Speedway will have practice from 3:30 until dark on Thursday. Then it will be closed Saturday and Sunday. 

This weekend BBMX is at Winnemucca MX for Round 8 of its season.

• Saturday and Sunday is when BBMX has round 8 of its season at Winnemucca. Saturday is for practice while Sunday is race day.   

After Saturday’s practice Winnemucca MX has a special short course event next door at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway.

The Winnemucca Motocross club has a special event starting at 6 p.m. Saturday after practice ends. They move next door to the Winnemucca Regional Raceway to have a Short Course showdown with both pit bike and dirt bike classes. 

On Saturday E-Street MX Park has round 5 of its Short Course series.

• Over the hill E-Street MX Park has round 5 of its Short Course races. On line registration is now open for the Saturday event. Sunday should be practice from 9 until 2 p.m. for motocross riders. 

• Prairie City has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

• Riverfront MX has practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday. Then they start an Over The Hill Gang racing weekend. Practice is from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday gates open at 6:30 a.m., practice begins at 8 a.m. with racing to follow. 

• MMX Racing should have practice Saturday, from 9 until 2 p.m. on the main, sand and kid tracks. Then on Sunday, from 9 until 3, the vintage track is added to the mix. 

RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):

This weekend NASCAR moves to the bullring at Bristol Motor Speedway. On Thursday Fox Sports 1 has a double header from there.

At 3:30 p.m. the network has ARCA Racing then at 6 p.m. it’s the Camping World Truck Series. 

• Friday at 4 p.m. Fox Sports has NHRA Qualifying Show #1 from Maple Grove Raceway. Then at 4:30 p.m. the USA Network has the Xfinity race from Bristol.

• Saturday is when the USA Network broadcasts the NASCAR Cup race from Bristol. The race has been described as rocket ships in a bathtub so it’s usually an action packed event under the lights. It’s another elimination race for those in this year’s Chase for the championship

• Sunday at 8 a.m. is when Fox Sports 1 has the NHRA Qualifying Show #2 from Reading. Then at 11 a.m. FOX broadcasts the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals from Maple Grove in Reading, Penn. 

That’s it for this weekend. Want to encourage, despite the smoke, to get out and attend a race if possible as there is nothing like it. Be safe and aware of the smoke we are getting. 

OTHER RACING NEWS:

Sign ups are still going on until October 1 for the Moto Mouth Mini Team.

If you have a young motocross racer in your family, there are only a couple of weeks to get them signed up for the reborn Moto Mouth Mini Team. There are requirements and the team is composed of the younger set. 

• Teresa’s Garage Radio Show is on the air from 2 until 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. In northwest Nevada, it can be heard over the air at 1060 AM.
