MARATHON NIGHT RACE FOR NNKC

STEAD, NV (Aug. 27) – The annual night race usually gets a good turn but this year’s turn out was huge. With just over a month to go until the national championship event there were 107 drivers registered.

Not only is the night race unique, but it provided a chance to race on the same track the IKF national championship event will use. With that many racers on hand everything was slowed down so the last race ended around 2:30 Sunday morning.

As usual the Kid Kart Class began the mains. They only ran six lap heats and mains as well as making standing starts.

Hunter Nelson was the first Kid Kart to complete six laps.

Hunter Nelson was the first to complete the six laps as he zipped around the track.

Jameson Judd was the second Kid Kart to complete six laps.

Jameson Judd was the second to do all six laps in a clean run under the lights.

Davey Jorgenson unfortunately had problems with his kart and didn’t complete the six laps.

Unfortunately the kart of Davey Jorgenson only completed three of the six laps. It seemed there was a fuel feed problem with his kart and he had to retire.

Starting the12-lap mains was the Super Stock Class. Due to only eight of them being present they chose a pill draw rather than qualifying and their main, which was last on the schedule was first.

On the green Jimmy Johns took off with Alec Beaudoin right behind him. They turned it into a two-kart race for the lead.

Alec Beaudoin won the Super Stock main.

Eventually a small error gave Beaudoin the break he needed to take the lead. Then Johns fell into the clutches of Jacob Ciari and they had a nose-to-tail duel for second.

All three finished in that order. Later Beaudoin said, “Jimmy Johns had a real good kart all night. He showed up, came to play so I just bided my time behind him and gave him a little push to let him know I was there.

“Then a couple of corners later he dropped a tire. Over all it was fun, one of the better night races. Everybody seems to be in a good mood.”

The Junior II main was all Brooks Anderline. He rocketed away from the start and left everyone in his wake. Behind him there was a four-way duel for second until Cooper Perez took the position.

At the checkered flag Anderline had a 7-second lead while Perez took second ahead of Andrew Hitchock and fourth place Carter Knight.

Brooks Anderline on his way to a run away victory in Junior II.

Asked about the race Anderline said,  “Got a great start I don’t know what happened on the start. I know I jumped way out there on the start and just set sail.  Got to thank my Dad as we’ve never had a kart this good in the night race, Cole Nelson, Invader Racing Engines.”

Next up were the fast guys, the 125 Shifter Class. They use a standing start and when the green lights went on Zach Rivera jumped into lead with Cabot Bigham right behind him.

After that it was all Rivera as he left everyone in his wake and won the race. Behind him Bigham ended up second with Zeke Corson third and Mike Faker fourth.

Zach Rivera on his way to winning the 125 Shifter main.

Just before heading to the Table of Doom for a post race check on his kart Rivera took a breath and said, “Exhausting, I’m not going to lie, I like when the competition comes out. We had some guys come down for the night race, they weren’t bad and they kept me in check.

“Really had to be consistent, I like the competition as Bigham did really well and finished 2nd. If he had more practice me and him would be duking it out. I’ve got to go to his home track and see what I’ve got against him. I had a great time, love the night race.”

Then he thanked his father Rodney, Nevada Kart Sport. He also added a special appreciation to Mike Faker, who has given him financial help with Rivera’s engine.

Next up was the Senior Class. For Dylan Albiani it was green to checkered. He basically was on cruise control for the entire 12-laps.

Behind him there was a close battle for second. In the end Albiani won while runner up Bryce Dickman ended up about two tenths of a second ahead of third place Stephen Eisert.

Once in the lead Dylan Albiani left everyone in his wake during the Senior main.

After the post race weigh in Albiani said, “From the start, kind of pulled a gap then tried to maintain as best as I could. Try to be a few tenths faster than the guys behind me. The track was so unpredictable but felt good.”

Then he thanked Speed Sense Motorsports for the chassis, Racer Motorsports for their support and Invader Racing Engines for their “monster power.”

When the green waved a dozen Junior 1 racers stormed down the front stretch and headed around Turns 1 and 2. Up front Kayden Williams was on point with Carson Hodge right behind him.

Carson Hodge used a steady drive to win Junior 1.

Soon Hodge took the lead while he, Williams and Jeremy Heath left the pack in their wake. In the end they would finish in that order.

Asked how being along up front is, Hodge said, “I’d rather be racing. Key is just keep on hitting the same marks.”

Then he thanked Jerry and other that have helped him.

This time when the KA100/TAG race was started the 100’s were the second group. On the green TAG racer Jack Schrady was on point. Behind the leader William Owen took the green and started to reel in the first group.

Coming from the second group, William Owen won the KA100/TAG combined race.

While it took several laps soon Owen was second and taking aim on leader Schrady. In the end Owen took the point and victory while Schrady was second overall.

After the race Owen said, “It was difficult, it was pretty tasking. I got kind of angry when they put us in the back so I think a little bit of that anger transpired through my driving. I felt great.”

Then he thanked his parents, brothers, sisters and cousins that show up to cheer for him.

Only two of the five F-80 Shifter karts were able to answer the start. In the end Skylar Corson won that main.

For the first time in probably at least a decade there was a separate F80 Shifter class. While the night began with five of them only two took the green for their main. In the end Skylar Corson scored a runaway victory over runner up Adam Auerback Jr.

Finally, saving the best for last came the Heavy Class. At the start of the evening there were 28 of them and their qualifying had to be broken into a couple of groups.

When their main began 23 karts took the green flag and headed down the front straight. At first Jesse Gwin was on point with Brandon Walsh giving chase. Both leaders would swap places at least a time or two.

William Owen used a steady drive to hold off another kart and win the Heavy main. This was the final race of the night.

Finally Gwin took the point for good but soon had another kart right behind him. This was the race of the night as behind the leader Brandon Arace took over third while Walsh slipped back to fourth. These two finished in that order.

Up front leader Gwin had another driver, whose name didn’t appear in the results, right behind him. At the finish Gwin was only about a half second ahead of that other kart.

After the race, and before his kart headed for the Table of Doom, Gwin said, “Oh man, very intense race for late in the morning but couldn’t be more fired up. Plenty of people out here, great race and I couldn’t be more lucky to come up with the win.”

Then he thanked his family and boss Charles Huffman.

On September 25 the NNKC will runs its final point’s race of the season. As usual on line registration will be offered and class champions will be crowned.

Then from October 7 to 9 will be the IKF National Championship races. The mains will be on Sunday but there will be racing for all four days. For further information please check the club’s website at, www.nnkcreno.com
