FERNLEY, NV (May 22) — Round 4 of this year’s BBMX season was staged on the motocross track at Fernley 95A Motor Sports Complex. There was a large turn out of around 515 entries so that usually means from350 to over 400 riders.
There were enough riders to have several motos where the starting gate was almost full. One of them, the second 85cc Open moto, did fill the gate. In fact a couple of divisions had Consi races after the regular field was determined.
The second 125/250 D moto may have had the closest finish of the day. When the gate dropped Sage Trebelhorn jumped into the lead with Elmer Pezzin giving chase.
Eventually the top three, now including Keith Stewart, pulled away letting the pack eat their dust. After taking the white flag Trebelhorn and Stewart had their own private battle and swapped the lead at least once before the final charge to the checkered flag.
It appeared that Trebelhorn would score the victory but in the end Stewart made a final charge and was in front by inches as they flew past the checkered flag. Later both riders congratulated each other while other riders came by to offer their congratulations.
Stewart was asked if he thought he might win. Then he said, “ No I didn’t think I would but had to go to the outside and make the pass. I jumped the roller to the flat, just got on the gas and wheelied up the finish.”
Then he thanked his uncle, father and mother as well as his friends for their support.
Next closest race came in the Schoolboy and Collegeboy second moto. When the gate dropped Ethan Lewis was in the lead with Chase Rychilik not far behind. Back in the pack Samuel McCord and Zachary Larsen were dueling for the lead in the Schoolboy class.
After the white flag both Lewis and Rychilik made the duel for overall win their own private show. In the end Lewis was able to just get a very small lead but would go on to just get a small gap over Rychilik.
After the race Lewis said, “I knew he was right on my back tire the whole entire time. I could feel his energy coming.”
Next question was what does he do when the pressure is close and constant like this race.
“I just try to stay as best focused as I can and just try to not make many mistakes,” he said.
When asked who he needed to be thankful for Lewis saidhis parents and Factory Connection.
There was one 125/250 Pro on hand so Justin Minsch, who won the 2-Stroke Open and that group.
In the250/450 Pro division there were four riders including veterans Chad Heishman and Rich Thorwaldson from Moto-Source.
In both motos once the gate dropped Aaron Siminoe bolted into the lead and was never headed. Minsch ended up second ahead of Heishman and Thorwaldson.
Also in the race was the 250/450 B group and a 30+ Master, Tim Stone. The B group was won by Garrett Rychluj with Zayne Bissell coming home second.
After the race Siminoe said, “I had a good eight laps on that one, yes sir.”
Earlier this spring Siminoe held a riding academy at the track so the next question was did that help him.
“It did help but didn’t get to ride when we had the academy. All in all we learned a lot and we applied that today,” he said. “As I get older I want more of a battle. When I was younger just wanted to be out front dominating. So I’d have to say, for me in my peak years, I’d like more of a battle.”
As to the future, he’s staying close to home for now.
“No Outdoors for me,” he said. “I’ve got a beautiful baby on the way next week.”
Then he gave special thanks to Tyler Enticknap and Sam Marson for giving everyone the opportunity to have a local track. He has a long list of sponsors so mentioned Mika Metals, Dunlop Tires and Fly Racing.
As usual the range of riders goes from the Pee Wees to a 60+ rider. In the Pee Wee rank Ducati Fayet was the 6 and Under winner while Oliver Lapin scored two victories in the 50cc 7 & Over as well as in the Open races.
Moving into the 65cc Class Parker Geissinger won the 9 & Under class while Kalvin Roberts scored a double when he won in the 10 & Up and Open divisions.
In the 85cc classes Gage Schwemer scored a double when he won in 12 & Under and Open. Luke Kunkel was the13 & Up winner while Drew Marson was the Supermini winner.
In the three women’s classes Emma Helming was the only “A” racer. Jayla Baxter won the “B” group while Anna McMillen was the “C” group winner.
There were also several age classes. At the top of that ladder Ed Park was the 60+ winner while the 50+ A Class winner was Darryl Haney.
Due to the amount of riders a couple of classes were combined and had Consi races as well as the regular ones.
The Big Bike Open C&D Kyle Cutler won the Consi race and that put him into the class race. Then he scored that victory as well. Chad Heishman won the Big Bike Open with the A& B Class. Then Justin Minsch made it a double when he won the 2-Stroke open.
In 125/250 D Consi the winner was Christopher Whalen. Winning the C race was Zachary Larsen while Zane Bissell won the B Class.
During the day there were several spills but the worst was when one woman racer went down and was run over by another that could not avoid her and also went down. The medics were called and she’ll was self-transported by her family for a check up. At this posting her condition is unknown.
