CARSON CITY, NV (1-1-22) — Local racers spent New Year’s Day at the Carson Raceway, an indoor track for electric go-karts. Their effort was to help a racer’s family as he is tackling a medical problem.
The benefit was the idea of another local racer Royce Goetz.
“I was the one that started it then Joe and Hailey Conroy pretty joined hands with the,” he said. “We all got together to help Buddy, who always helped us.”
He added that Randy “Buddy” Boyd and his wife were at first reluctant but later got behind the effort.
“We wanted to make sure they had some cash on hand during this time,” Goetz said.
If Boyd is unable to race this season Goetz mentioned he’ll be helping with one of the cars for Royce Goetz Racing.
After everyone got signed in there were going to be a series of qualifying heat races leading to a final later that afternoon. This reporter also had a chance to talk with Boyd about what happened and what he’s looking at in the future.
“We just got diagnosed with a brain tumor,” he said. “Hopefully it’s not life threatening. In its self is not threatening but what it causes might be.
“Hopefully we’re going to deal with it through medication for the most part to get it to shrink so we can get it removed. Royce and Joe, from Carson Raceway, did this to help out with everything.”
Asked about what he felt about this Boyd said, “Normally wouldn’t like something like this to happen but they did it anyway and it’s nice to have the support from fellow racers.”
After that Boyd got into a kart and went racing in one of the heats. Overall the event was both a celebration of New Year’s as well as a chance for racers to help another racer.

• On Sunday Reno Cars & Coffee has its first weekend of the month meet at the Keitzke Starbucks. Due to the chilly weather attendance was down but there were a couple of stand out cars. One of them is a replica of a movie car owned by Garrett Boskie.
”This is a 1982 Delorean, it was manufactured actually in December of ’81 but technically it’s the ’82 model. It has the regular V-6 2.8-liter Renault-Volvo engine but it’s turned into a time machine,” he said. And yes it does look right out of a certain movie.
“My dad loved “Back to the Future” as much as I did and unfortunately he’s passed and I just wanted to relive those childhood memories from him so this is it,” he said.
He got the car from a guy that builds things like this. His Delorean has been gone through, including taking body off the frame and making sure everything was straight.
“Got the car from a guy named Video Bob Mosley, this is car number 39 and got it at the end of October,” he said. “He did great work on it, builds these for a living and he does other cars like Ecto-1 from Ghost Busters for Cadillac, then the Night Rider cars and a bunch of other things. Yea, it’s real cool.”
Another car, which is pretty unusual is owned by Kurt Spencer.
“This is a ’76 AMC Pacer got Blazer Axels, International Transfer Case, and I built an AMC 360 for it. I’ve done a bunch of work to it,” he said. “It actually drives surprisingly well, it’s perfect in the snow, good off-road, good on-road. I get more attention driving this thing than any other vehicle I own.”
While the car’s running gear is unusual this doesn’t apply to the interior.
“Actually very specifically on the interior I didn’t do anything. I left it as dirt as it was just kind for the patina,” he said. “I got a little annoyed when my wife went in and tried to vacuum it one day. Actually she does like to ride in it. Her infinity got stuck in the snow the other day and I had to pull her out with this thing so she appreciates it.”
There were several cars including one that had some dramatic work done on its motor. Hopefully next time I can find the owner and ask him about this.
Next up for Reno Cars and Coffee is a meet on January 16. The location is at the Human Bean, by the corner of Keitzke and Moana Lane.
