RENO, NV (Dec. 29) — As we say good by to one year and welcome a New Year there are a few things happening. Next weekend however racing begins in earnest for open wheel and motocross fans.
CAR MEETS:
• While not exactly a car meet there is a benefit for an area driver. Hobby Stock competitor Randy Boyd has a medical issue so his friends are holding a charity benefit for him News Years Day.
The Carson Raceway, located at 3777 North Carson Street is the location and things get going around noon. It’s an indoor go-kart track and offers a chance to race your friends, family members, others or to just see what your lap times are. And it’s a way to help a fellow racer.
• Reno Cars & Coffee gets the New Year going with a meet at the Keitzke Starbucks. A great place where one can get some good hot chocolate as well as other things.
The meet begins at 10 a.m. and usually has a wide variety of cars and trucks to see and admire. It’ll be on the cool side so dress warm.
MOTOCROSS PRACTICE:
•Once again the track at Fernley NinetyfiveA Speeday is still closed. Once the weather warms up a bit the motocross track should open up again for weekend practice.
• MMX Racing has a full slate of practice sessions this weekend starting on Thursday and running through Sunday. Due to the recent storm it’s probably a good idea to check with their hotline before loading up and heading to the track. The hot line is, (530) 419-5200 and the website is, www.mmxracing.com.
• REP Racing has not updated its hotline from last week. Best bet is to check the hotline at, 1-775-265-7223 or check their website; www.repracingmx.com.
RACING (4-WHEELS):
• Stockton 99 Speedway had a New Year’s race scheduled but due to the weather postponed that event. Seems the track and pits are flooded. They did not release the date for the replacement.
Antioch Speedway had a race schedule for January 2nd, day after New Years Day but has postponed it until February 5th.
• To the east, starting today it the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout. It’s a micro sprint affair with winged and non-winged cars and around 1,700 are expected.
There is a local connection as Tanner Thorson, who hails from Gardnerville, will race each type of car. Qualifying races began Wednesday with the main events run on New Year’s Day.
To see the event one needs to go to www.floracing.com or see the feed on YouTube. Should be a wild time out there.
• This is the final week we are so deep into the Re-Run Zone. One good source of various races and car shows is www.mavtv.com while, for highlights, one can use www.youtube.com.
In last week’s preview I listed a bunch of sites where one an get their fix. One more to add to that list is www.racexr.com.
Thankfully next week is when things get going for race fans. That’s it for the final preview for this year. Want to wish all our readers a safe and Happy New Year. Will see you again next week.
