DIAMOND MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY AT RATTLESNAKE RACEWAY

FALLON, NV (Oct. 30) — It appeared that Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, California would not be able to run this year’s Halloween Bash. This was due to the fairgrounds being used as a fire camp for those battling the Dixie Fire.

Fortunately the folks at Rattlesnake Raceway offered their track for the event. As a result the Diamond Mountain crew, plus some Rattlesnake regulars helped prepare the track and the two-day event was on.

Joe Blackwell and other drivers helped with a trick or treat before the racing began.

Before everything got rolling all the racers brought their cars to the front straight.

At the trick or treat part of the night many of the kids were in costumes including these two young witches.

After that it was trick or treat time for the kids in the stands and pits.  This was an early Halloween for these youngsters and they, as well as the adults, had a great time.

Once the track was cleared it was time for the heats. After the heat races ended there was a fast then slow dash for the Stock Car division.

Randy Boyd, who drove with someone on top of his car, won the Stock Car Fast Dash.

When the checkered waved at the end of the Fast Dash Randy Boyd, who had a skeleton riding on his car won followed by Royce Goetz. The victory earned him some extra money.

Rusty McMillan, who had a passenger riding with him, won the Stock Car Slow Dash.

The Slow Dash ended with Rusty McMillan taking the victory with Ronnie Goetz and Jimmy Berhorst ending up second and third.

Jorden Garretson won the Sprint Car main.

After intermission the Sprint Cars began the main show but only three of them answered the green flag. In the end Jordan Garretson won after being chased by Bob Massie. Coming in third was John Minor, who had some problems spinning in Turn 4 early in the contest.

Sadly there are no quotes from the Sprint Car winner as he never showed up when the awards were being handed out.

Next up were the Mini Stocks and on the green Kent Knisley had the point. However three cars tangled in Turn 1 so another start was ordered.  This time Knisley led with Cooper Lee right behind him.

After another quick caution Lee too the point on the restart. Soon Knisley got the lead back while Lee faided to third and Bob Kelly took over the runner up spot. In the end Knisley won followed by Kelly and Lee.

When the awards were given out Knisley said, “That was great, really awesome.  After being asked about his huge lead he said, “I did not find that out until the end, kept looking over my shoulder and can’t find no body.”

Then he thanked his parents, girlfriend as well as Old Iron Powder Coating owned by Glenn Lee.

Next it was time for the IMCA Sport Mods and on this night some were running topless. The drivers were allowed to remove the roof coverings from their race cars.

When the green waved on the 15-car field, Dwayne Melvin was on point with Colton Chew giving chase. Then a caution showed the pace.

On the restart Melvin was on point with Rich McCoy right behind him. That lead evaporated with another caution but on the restart Melvin still held the point.

After the next restart McCoy used an inside move in Turn 4 to claim the lead. Once again there was another caution.

When the green waved again there were seven laps to go and no one could challenge McCoy as he steamed off to the victory. Craig Nieman ended up second with Melvin third ahead of Jimmy Ray Huffmon.

Later in the evening McCoy said, “It wasn’t like last night, I definitely had to work for it. I knew he (Nieman) was there, saw him and had the hammer down.”

Then he thanked his family for their help as well as sponsors Auto Motion, RAP Racing and Pacific Crest Auto Sales.

The Bootleggers are a modern version of the Bomber class and they put on a good show with how the cars are decorated. When the green waved for their main eight cars took off for Turn 1.

Ray Blankenship heads for the checkered flag has he wins the Bootlegger main.

About three laps into the race Ray Blankenship grabbed the lead and took off. Behind him there was a duel for second place between Wade Lumsden and Taggart Garland. In the end Blankenship scored the victory followed by Lumsden, Garland and Travis Showe.

Then he thanked sponsor W.G. Auto Sales, his wife and noted he drove for his son that couldn’t race that evening.

Chris Nieman scores the IMCA Modified victory.

It took a pair of attempts to get the race going and each time Wade Lumsden led the charge with Mark Skender giving chase. Soon Chris Nieman took the lead with Wade Kennemore chasing him while Lumsden slipped back to third and was being chased by Gene Kay. Lap after lap Nieman was able to hold off a determined Kennemore.

Two laps from the end Kennemore was almost on Nieman’s back bumper. In the end Nieman prevailed followed by runner up Kennemore, Lumsden and Kay.

Chris Nieman holds the the trophy for winning the IMCA Modfied main.

Asked if he knew how close Kennemore was Nieman said, “Yes I did. Just knew if I glued to the bottom it would be tough for him to go on the outside around me. You just didn’t have enough the corners on the outside. We caught up with some lappers and it seemed to work out.”

Then he thanked Lonnie, Grandma Cheryl Nieman and sponsors Foothill Meat Company and JT Butcher Supply.

Finally it was time for the Stock Car class to take to the track. It took three heats to set the final field and there were even two dashes used as well. When the green waved 17 cars stormed off toward Turn 1.

Up front Jacob Dias was on point with Carl Barlow and Royce Goetz giving chase. An early caution slowed things down and on the restart Goetz used an outside pass to grab the lead.

Then thing stopped after a melee at the end of the front straight left one car backwards with steam coming out of it.

The officials threw the red flag as the rushed to make sure the driver was okay; he was. Then they got busy cleaning up the mess. Once racing resumed there was another quick caution but this time, on the restart Goetz took off while behind him there was a duel for third.

Royce Goetz takes the checkered flag when he won the Stock Car main. This was the final oval track race for this year in Northern Nevada and Northeast California.

Up front Goetz was chased by Randy Boyd as they tore around the track. Unfortunately Boyd spun out of second in Turn causing a caution. Behind the leader it became a six-car scrap for second and that allowed Goetz to escape.

He also reached lap traffic first and was moving through that before any of his rivals caught the slower traffic. In the end Goetz won followed at a distance by runner up Nevin Kennemore, Carl Barlow and Rocky Goetz.

That meant that three of the first four places were all part of the Goetz Racing team.

At the awards ceremony Goetz said, “Buddy got next to me and actually passed me when I messed up big time. Then after that I realized what I did, I made the correction and guess I just left everybody.”

Royce Goetz and his wife with the trophy for winning the Stock Car main.

He also had some great comments about the track. “The track was awesome all weekend. I think that the RSR crew and Diamond Mountain Crew and even in week’s past I’ve been watching the RSR crew. They’ve been doing excellent with the track prep. Hopefully that’s good-things to come,” Goetz said.

Then he thanked his wife and family for putting up with all his craziness. He also expressed his appreciation for sponsors Royce Goetz Racing, RGR Automotive and Diesel, Winning Attitude Motorsports and Gold Fast Racing Team.

When it was mentioned that he won the year’s final oval track race in Northern Nevada and Northeast California he said, “That’s awesome.”

Now the tracks are dark and everyone is getting ready to enjoy the holidays. Tracks are starting to make schedule for the 2022 racing season.

As soon as spring comes drivers and crews will be getting ready to take to the tracks again. Until then they’ll enjoy trophies and talking about their exploits on the area’s tracks.
