YERINGTON, NV (Sept. 26) — The Mason Valley Dirt Squirts got MRANN’s fall season rolling this weekend. For the first time in eight years they returned to a location east of town on a dry but somewhat windy day.
As usual the riders lined up in Expert, Amateur and Novice rows with each using a dead engine start. Due to the dust the amateur and novice lines has to wait until the wind cleared things, then they got to take off.
At the end of the first lap Brody Honea was on point but the first three experts within a period of 60 seconds and while fourth place was two minutes behind them. After that Honea left everyone in his dust.
Due to the length of the course to be classed as a finisher a rider had to complete two laps while the fastest did all three. Riders needed two pits stops for gas and water for the rider.
It took Honea 1:07:05 to complete his first lap and each circuit after that he cut a second or two off his time. At the checkered flag his elapsed time was 3:16:73.
Asked about the race he said, “Awesome but dealing with lappers on the second and third lap was a little bit rough. They’ve been running this course for a lot of years and we got to ride a lot of the old single track, which is a blast. But I mean it’s still gotten a little beat up from all those years of racing.”
Then he thanked his parents, girl friend, his uncle Reece and aunt Tina for always being there. He also expressed appreciation to sponsors Absolute Draining Service, Reno Kawasaki, TBT and McGill.
Arriving six seconds behind Honea was second overall, and the first 4-Stroke Expert, Willy Heiss. He used a good stead run to end with an elapsed time of 3:22:10 at the finish and was pretty happy with that.
“It was a great day, suspension worked great, bike worked awesome, the pit crew was amazing so no complaints really. Have to thank my wife for letting me do this stuff.”
Then he thanked Gil Grieve at TBT Suspension, Moose Racing, Rhino Power, Let’s Ride and everyone that supports him.
Just one and a half seconds behind Heiss was third overall Russel Tonjum. He had an elapsed time of 3:23:32 after a run that had a challenging beginning.
“I went down four times on the first lap,” he said. “I pulled the hole shot and was felling way too confident. I was hauling butt and clobbered one big rock in the brush trying to stay out of the whoops. That slowed me down a lot.
“The course was super fun, it’s honestly really fun, just tight rocks and whoops. And in between is just super deep sand so as soon as you lose your momentum you’re wobbling back and fourth.”
Then he thanked Gil with TBT, Reno Motorsports, Layne at Big Valley Honda, Greg Pheasant, Absolute Drain Service and Nate with DDC.
Going down the list in ninth place was Justin Miller, the first 40+ Expert and in10th was the first 30+ Expert Josh Cook. Coming home 11th was the first amateur Carson Calder, who rides in the class.
After finishing Calder said, “The race was good, it was super rough, that’s how the desert is. Didn’t have any problems with the rocks but there sure were a lot of them.”
Then he thanked his family, the Jones family and 5th Gear.
Coming home 17th was the first 50+ Expert Ken Downey. Further down the list in 24th was Adam DeVargas, the first Novice to finish all three laps.
After taking the checkered, and taking a few deep breaths he said, “The race was technical, it was fast, hard and took everything I had without a doubt.”
Then he thanked God, his Pop, wife, kid, mother-in-law and MRANN for the event.
Looking at the overall results Christian Courtney was the first Sunday woman to complete all three laps and she ended up 42nd overall. There were 123 riders that started Sunday’s race and 52 of them were classed as DNF, probably because most didn’t complete two laps. That left 71 riders who either completed all three laps or at least two of them.
