LOVELOCK SPEEDWAY: FRONTIER DAY RACES

LOVELOCK, NV (Aug. 7) — After being dark last year due to the Lovelock Speedway Silver State Racing is open once again. This weekend it helped the town celebrate it’s founding with the two-day Frontier Days races.

After Friday’s races it was apparent the track needed work so a group of volunteers pitched in running the water trucks as well as wheel packing and blading the track’s surface. Susanville promoter Jeff Olschowka was there due to his race being canceled due to smoke and he did the final blading of the track.

When it was time for the IMCA main 10 drivers took the green flag and stormed into the first turn. Robert Mull briefly held the lead until Zach Cail grabbed it. Behind them Shawn Larocque was moving toward the front and took over second from Gene Kay. A tangle between Cail and Larocque brought the first caution.

Once everyone was back in their proper order Larocque was on point. This time the restart didn’t go well as two cars tangled in Turn 2. One of them needed to be towed to the pits while others pulled off due to damage they also received.

One of them was Jeff Olshowka as he got a flat, pitted for a new tire and made back in time. Zach Cail only made eight laps but in one of them he set the fastest time at 16.513 seconds.

The final caution came after contact tore the left side bodywork of Mull’s car loose. When the green waved again Olschowka charged to the front. Now the chase was on but Olschowka claimed the victory with Larocque second ahead of third place Cole Jones.

Back in the pits Olshowka said, “It was a little entertaining. A lot of good cars, it was a fast track, a little carnage here and there when the guys got together. Things happen in racing.

“We started second row from the back, like eighth or tenth, I’m not sure. Got a flat as run into from behind, got a tire and came back out. Thinkwe restarted eighth then worked up to first.

He mentioned working 12 hours on the track and thanked the guys that helped. Then he thanked sponsors Icon Pistons, O-Show body,Gordon Timer as well as his family for their support.

The Silver State Winged Sprint Cars were also there. Their main had an exciting start to it.

Contact at the start of the sprint car main sent the car of Jeff Macedo into a flip.

Taking the green flag there was contact up front that sent pole sitter Jeff Macedo’s car into a flip where it landed on its side. The race was stopped as officials rushed to his aid. Fortunately he wasn’t injured but the same can’t be said for his car.

After things were cleaned up the field reformed and on the green Bob Cooney took the point, he also set the fastest lap at 14.653 seconds.

For much of the race Kurt Goddard was chasing Cooney. Earlier Goddard rolled his car so was racing with a borrowed wing. In the end Cooney won with Goddard about two and a half seconds back while Justin DeGeorge finished third.

Later that evening Cooney said, “It was craxy but that’s racing, bump somebody’s wheel and you might go over. Lappers weren’t a problem, I mean you’ve just got to watch them and see where they are at. They’re rookies, they’ve got to learn just like I did.

“The track was really awesome. I’ve been out of the car for two years and we’re just getting back into it.”

Then he thanked his grandsons, sons and brother, who is the crew chief.

Since their race in Susanville was canceled the Nevada Outlaw Dwarf Cars showed up. Eight of these speedsters took the green flag and up front Joe Frock was being chased by Glen Sciarani.

The first caution came out quickly as Bill Christianos spun in Turn 2. On the restart it was the Frock/Sciarani show.

There would he one more caution when the motor in Justin Schilling’s car gave up the ghost. He would be towed back to the pits.

Once again when the green waved Frock took the leadl and was soon in cruise control has he headed for the victory. Still Sciarani was less than two seconds behind as the finished second ahead of third place Jeff Foster, who earlier set the fastest lap at a blazing 13.720 seconds.

Due to having to work Frock left as soon as he could. But he sent these quotes about the night.

“It was a good race, track was fast and Jeff Olschowka did a great job prepping the track. It has multiple grooves which made it easy to pass and was fun to race on. I think we put on a good show for the fans,” Frock said.

Then he thanked John Randall for his help as well as sponsors Damron Racing, R&J Landscaping, Wild Island, Zoomaluma Graphics, Nieman Metal Works and Pro mechanix.

Five Hobby Stocks the green and first on point was Clayton Holloway. Behind them Brandon Davidson and Alyssa Jones were dueling for second. Eventually Jones took second then used an inside pass on the front straight to take the lead.

The only caution came when one car dropped its drive shaft. Holloway used this break in the action to head for the pits to get a flat tire changed. He later set the fastest lap at 16.968 seconds.

Alyssa Jones does a victory lap after winning the Hobby Stock main.

With three to go the green waved and Jones took off, she would score the victory. The top three finished with ahbut a half seond between them with Dwayne Inlow second and Brandon Davidson third.

Back in the pits Jones said, “The race was good, lot’s of fun. Finally got the car hooked up and it ran good. Got out front, kind of set the pace and was good to go. I was a little nervous after last night but stayed together and it was fast for us.”

Then she thanked her father, grandparents as well as sponsors Hunter Machine, Bianchis Napa Auto Parts, Patriot Storage and Verna Chiropratic.

Mikki Geuchat in his Gen-X racer was first overall in the Mini Stock main.

The Mini Stock main had two Gen-X cars in the field. On the green Travis Showe was on point until Mikki Beuchat in his Gen-X car took it. A bit later Cody Thunder in the other Gen-X car took second while Showe was third or “first in class.”

Travis Showe was third but the first mini stock to reach the finish.

At the checkered flag Beuhat scored the overall victory, Thunder was second while Showe was the first Mini Stock to cross the finish line

Logan Sage takes the checkered flag as he wins the Bootlegger main.

Four Bootleggers took the green but the race belonged to Logen Sage as he not only won but set the fastest lap at 21.835 seconds. Ryan Parkhurst finished second while Charles Hooten was third.

• Friday’s winners were, Gent Kay – IMCA Modified, GordanGarretson – Sprint Cars, Alyussa Jones – Hobby Stock and Kent Knisley-Mini Stocks.
