RENO, NV (March 31) — Racing Preview for this Easter week is light as most major series are taking it off. Still there are car meets, racing in this region plus some on TV as things take a short breather before getting rolling again.
CAR MEETS AND CRUISES:
• Once again the weekend gets rolling on Friday evening with the Fernley Main Street Cruise. It runs from 7 until 9 p.m. with the Wigwam being the meeting point. One benefit is the lower gas prices if one comes from Reno or Sparks.
• Sunday has two different car meets. Up in Truckee, California there is the Spring Thaw Rally 2021. It starts at 11 a.m.at 11183 Trails End Road.
Reno Cars & Coffee has it’s first weekend of the month meet starting at 10 a.m. by the Keitzke Starbucks. This meet is a great way to see cars, trucks, motorcycles and meet fellow car people.
MOTORCYCLES (RACING AND PRACTICE):
• The event in our area is the AMA West Hare Scrambles, which is also a MRANN event, held outside of Doyle, California at the Fort Sage OHV area. It’s a two-day event with Easter sunrise service and a youth Easter Egg hunt that morning.Youngsters race Saturday while the Big Bikes get their turn Sunday in timed races. Looks like the big bike riders will get to use the Widow Maker downhill.
Riders must use an online pre-entry and those close at noon Friday, April 2. Anyone competing as a MRANN rider won’t need an AMA card. For further information please check, www.racemrann.com.
REP Racing also has practice sessions but Zeb had not updated the hotline when this article was posted Wednesday evening. So be sure to check the hotline at 1-775-265-7223 before heading out.
RACING (REGIONAL):
• Those planning racing in VORRA’s Hawthorne 275 need to get their online entries in by Easter Sunday. On Monday there will be a drawing for starting positions. For further information please go to, www.vorraracing.com.
• Another track is opening it’s 2021 season with a two-day show on Friday and Saturday. Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, California starts its racing.
Friday’s racing begins at 6 p.m. but Saturday’s action starts at 5 p.m. Youngsters will get a special arm band and can participate in a Easter Egg hunt for those 12 and under. It is suggested they bring an Easter basket with them.
• There are several tracks in Central and Northern California starting their season this weekend. A good source for finding out these events is on Face Book. Davey’s American Racing keeps track of these and has a live program at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
One track is Madera Speedway. This week they are allowed to have some fans and they live stream Saturday’s races on ShorttrackTV that you can find on You Tube.
RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):
• Fox Sports 1 at 3 p.m. Thursday has NASCAR Race Hub. Then at 3:30 p.m. www.iracing.com has the third round of the IndyCar iRacing Challenge.
For the next few Wednesday iRacing has virtual NASCAR Cup events as well. Please check their schdule for time.
• Friday is pretty empty but a good time to check other sources to see events you might have missed. A couple that have previous races or highlights are www.youtube.com and www.mavtv.com. For World of Outlaw fans www.dirtvision.com is a good source while another for short track events is www.floracing.com.
• Saturday is slim pickings but a good time to see a new international series, called Extreme E. It’s an off road series using electric SUV’s as they travel the world for different events on rugged terrain. Qualifying starts at 7 a.m. from Saudi Arabia.
Sunday gets going at 12:30 p.m. when Fox Sports 2 has the semi-final and crazy races from the Extreme E event. Then at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has the finals from Saudi Arabia.
That’s it for this Racing Preview. Be safe out there, try and get to a live race as there is nothing like it for color, speed and excitement. Want to wish everyone out there a very Happy and Safe Easter and be sure to give some thought about why this day is important. See you next week.
