NORCAL STARTS SXS SEASON AT FERNLEY

FERNLEY, NV (MAR. 13) — Norcal Rock Racing began its season with an event presented by California Custom Trailers and Power Sports. The even was for the SxS series and there was a good turn out and great weather.

After a pair of heat races and some track maintenance everyone was ready to go. First on track were the youth classes and one group even had a 7-year-old driving.

Alex Ranuio on his way to winning the first main in the Stock 170 Class.

The UTV 170 Stock Class lined up first and on the green both Alex Ranuio and Tayson Messersmith were side-ty-side as they passed the flagman. Going up the first hill Ranuio took the point with Messersmith and Adrian Mertinez giving chase. The finished in that order when their six-lap race ended.

Dylan Trent gets some air on his way to winning the UTV 170 Mod main.

Next on the line was the UTV 170 Mod group and on the green Dylan Trent left everyone hi his dst. For him it would be a three-peat as he also won both of his heat races. Finishing second was Tayson Messersmith, doing double duty while Madisyn Leard ended up third.

Before the awards were given out Trent, a 6th grader from Truckee, California, was asked if it was easier to race with someone or with such a big lead.

“I like having competitors that I’m able to race with,” he said. “Like a couple of races ago when I had Wyatt and he’s he’s a really good competitor. The course was great except for the bumpy part.”

Then he thanked his father, who owns Trent Fabrication in Sparks, California Custom Trailers and the Auto Doctor.

While Dylan Trent won everything i the UTV Mod 170 class the final turn in the first heat almost tripped him up. Fortunately he was able to recover and went on to win that heat.

Third on the line was a combined race featuring the UTV Youth 900/1000 and the UTV Youth 570 Class. Theh used a staggered start as the 1000 group was faster than the 570 racers.

Up front for the 900/1000 class Branden Judge was on point and was being chased by ColeGamma and Garlyn Leard. Close behind them came the only RS1 racer piloted by Tyler Shade. At the checkered flag they would finish in that order.

Jordyn Skaggs won the UTV 570 Youth class.

Behind the lead quartet were the 570 racers and at the start Taryn McCalla held the lead until Jordyn Skaggs made the winning pass and went on to win their main. Skaggs is a 6th grader from Winters, California.

Asked about the race she said, “I was in second then in first about a third of the way after the beginning. The course was good except for a bumpy part.”

Then she thanked her family and those that came out to see her race. She also thanked sponsors Road Vixens, makes of clothing as well as Hunt & Sons.

Ryan Bonanno notches another family victory when he won the UTV 1000 Sportsman main.

Next up was the UTV 1000 Sportsman class and after the green Ryan Bonanno and Brandon Van Rooyen crossed the first jump side-by-side. After that Bonanno took the point with Van Rooyen giving chase. they finished in that order with J.Z. Antonucci taking third.

Topping the UTV 1000 Pro Class was Breckin Miramon.

Next to get the green flag was the UTV 1000 Pro division and winner Breckin Miramon led the charge past the flagman. He went on to win followed by Brianna Bonanno and Jake Olson.

Mason Myers takes the checkered after winning the UTV Sportsman main. He led from green to checkered.

When the green waved for the next main Mason Meyers led the UTV Turbo Sportsman chargefrom the stagine area. He went on to win the race followed by Chad Jessee and Jake Watson. Right after taking the white flag one of the cars flipped and ended up side down outside of Turn 1. Fortunately the driver was uninjured.

Winning the final race of the day was John Bonanno who topped the UTV Turbo Pro divisions.

The final race honors went to the UTV Turbo Pro Class. Both John Bonanno and Cory Deen went over the first jump side-by-side. By the third lap Luke Patterson took over second and the chase was on.

In the end Bonanno scored the victory followed by Patterson and Dean while Darian Gomez ended up fourth That brought the day’s racing to an end.

Before the awards were handed out Bonanno, who hails from Santa Rosa, said, “Spent a bunch of time the last couple of weeks getting the car dialed in. We race WORCS series as well last race was at Peoria , Arizona and we lost a right rear tire that cost me every part related to that part of the car. You know it’s all good to get it back together then we just went to No Limit down in Loomis, California that’s who I built the cadr through doing tuning, clutch work and I got it kind of dialed in. Can-Am makes a really great machine.

“Felt good, the car’s working good and am learning how to drive it. So I can put it in the corners with out using the brakes very often, use the throttle and enjoy it.”

Then he thanked his family and gave his wife Krist props for letting him do all this. He also thanked sponsors No Limit, We Racing and his own business Bonanno Auto Repair.

During the day there were a few rollovers, one car lost a front wheel but no one, except the car was injured. A good testament to the safety of these machines.

Depending on what happens with Washoe County the next race, in mid-April will either be at Wild West Motorsports Park or back at 95 Motor Sports Complex
