RENO, NV (Feb. 10) – Now it’s time for a longer season preview as racing in our region is about to get rolling. I’ll focus on our region and Northern Nevada and will do the big off road series later.
REPORTER’S NOTE: I’m amending this article as I needed to add something and got confused on another motorcycle event. Sorry for the mixup.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
• Last week this reporter highlighted MotoMedx, a group started by Reno Fire Department Captain Steve Clark. His goal is to form a group of trained volunteers that will provide medical assistance at motorcycle races and rides.
He now has set up training classes for those volunteers. If a person rides an even if they don’t race this is a way to give back to the sport or recreation you love. You can either contact him through the MotoMedx Face Book page or the website, www.motomedx343.com.
REPORTER’S NOTE: The cancellation was for a District 36 race at Finger Lakes that has been postponed. The following is my correction.
• Online registration for this weekend’s round of the Frigid 6 series is now open but closes Friday evening. There is will be another registration ession at the MMX track Saturday.
This weekend’s AMA District race has been postponed and moved. Those interested should check the district’s Face Book page.
SCHEDULES (NNKC & TOP Gun):
• Northern Nevada Kart Club (NNKC) has made some improvements to the club’s track, Desert Park Raceway. It’s located on the dirt extension of Lemmon Drive and the club, unless the rain date has to be used has seven point races planned this season. For further information the club’s website is www.nnkcreno.com.
Two big events happen in July and September when this year’s KPX series visits the track. The race brings in kart racers from around the west to compete for this championship.
• To the east and south of Fallon is Top Gun Dragstrip and their 2021 season begins with a test and tune session on Saturday, April 10. The first point races are a two-day affair on April 24-25 and the season rolls on from there.
The track’s website is www.topgunraceway.com or one can look for Top Gun Dragstrip on Face Book.
REPORTER’S NOTE: Here is another correction as well as an addition for a sprint car group.
• Another group beginning its season this month is the NV Outlaws, Dwarf Cars. They began with a national race in Yuma, Arizona at the Cocopah Speedway then move to Pahrump before heading north to Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville, California.
After Susanville they bounce between Nevada and Northern California tracks. The Dwarf Car season ends at the Dirt Track Championship weekend at Rattlesnake Raceway.
Another group is the Northern Nevada Winged Sprint Cars. They too alternate tracks during their season. They start in Susanville then travel to the Nevada tracks as well as visit American Valley Speedway in Quincy, California. Then, like the Dwarf Cars they finish the year at the Dirt Track Championships in Fallon.
SCHEDULE (MOTORCYCLES):
• As usual MRANN gets local racing rolling with their first event on February 13/14, which is President’s Birthday weekend. The Trail Blazer’s Motorcycle Club hosts the event. In fact many camp out at the location and stay until Monday as it’s a big family event.
Right now the online sign ups are going on so one can secure their place by doing that. The season, with a summer break, runs into November. For further information please check MRANN’s website at www.racemrann.com.
If things work out the West Hare Scrambles will be outside of Doyle, California the weekend of April 3-4. Then later in the year the clubs of MRANN come together and act as hosts for the National Hare & Hound series. The race is slated for October 9/10 and will start out at Lovelock.
• Motocross racers start their season when Battle Born MX series begins on the weekend of March 27/28 at Fernley or the Sand Box as it’s also known. The Reno chapter of the Over the Hill Gang will stage the event and alternate with the local Old Timer’s chapter.
Two of the races will be in Northern California and he season runs until the final event November 6/7 back at Fernley. Battle Born MX has a Face Book page as well as a site, www.battlebornmx.com.
Memorial Day weekend brings the annual OTHG National event to Fernley. It’s a weekend, May 28-30, of racing including a BBQ Saturday evening.
SCHDULE (Oval Tracks):
• Northern Nevada as well as Northeast California are blessed with several oval tracks. To the east Elko Summit Raceway begins its year on April 15 as it hosts the Northern Nevada Modified Tour as well as its regular classes.
The first race is the only single day one on the schedule while the rest are two-day shows ending in early September.
• Moving west Battle Mountain Raceway begins its season with a two-day event on March 27/28 and it ends in late August. All of their events are two-day shows.
• Winnemucca Regional Raceway has a mix of single and two-day shows. Things get rolling the weekend of April 10/11 then on April 17 the track hosts the Northern Nevada Modified Tour.
The next single day event is July 2nd for the Ty Scott Memorial. The track’s season runs until mid September.
• Unfortunately it appears that Lovelock Speedway will again remain dark for this season. It’s been two years in a row and as of this posting no one has come forward to take over its operations. Sad to lose this nice bull ring.
• Rattlesnake Raceway, located east of downtown Fallon, starts its season on Sunday, April 18 with the Northern Nevada Modified Tour. Currently this date is pending but hopefully it will come true. The track has a page on Face Book and the site is, www.rattlesnakeraceway.org.
The rest of the season, that ends in early October with the annual Dirt Track Championships are all two-day shows. Some are Friday-Saturday while others are Saturday-Sunday like the annual 4th of July show with fireworks.
• Moving south Tonopah Speedway’s season begins on May 29 and ends on September 18. There is a two-day show on August 20/21.
• As of this posting there are no dates for 95 Motor Sports Complex. I’m told things are getting sorted out and hopefully they’ll release a schedule in the next few weeks. When that happens I will post it here.
• There are two tracks in Northeast California that essentially are in the Northern Nevada region. One of them is Diamond Mountain Speedway located at the Lassen County Fairgrounds in Susanville, California. Getting there is an easy drive north on Highway 395.
The season starts with two test and tune sessions on March 20 then on March 27 there is a combined swap meet and another test and tune session. First two points races are on the weekend of April 2/3 and the second day might have an Easter Egg hunt for the kids but that is yet to be determined.
Many of the weekends are two-day shows including the 3rd and 4th of July with fireworks at the end of Sunday’s show. The season ends with a two-day show August 21/22. The track has a Face Book Page and their site is, www.dmspeedway.com and the track has a Face Book page.
• A little closer to Reno is American Valley Speedway in Quincy. Due to restrictions they had to be dark in 2020 but have a schedule for this season.
Things start on Sunday, April 11 with play day or a test and tune sessions. Racing beings with two days of UTV competition on April 16/17 then the car get rolling on May 1.
Sunday, August 15 is the annual Fair Day races and the season ends on September 11 with the annual Timber Cup race. Finally on September 24/25 the track ends its year with two days of UTV racing. The track’s site is, www.americanvalleyspeedway.com.
That’s it for right now and hopefully circumstances don’t change the schedules. Everyone is ready to go racing again.
