RENO, NV (Nov. 29) – It’s that time again to take a look back at this unusual season so I’ll begin with the Northern Nevada Kart Club. This 2020 season was anything but normal although the club was able to get in all six races points it had scheduled.
Due to the pandemic restrictions the originally scheduled rounds, April 19 and May 10 were canceled, actually postponed. Then in June the club was able to get its season rolling.
Two events however were never reinstated as KPX canceled its season so no race here. Then the Mike Arnold Enduro, slated for October 8 was also canceled.
Still the season finally got started on June 7th and even the night race on August 22nd was staged. Due to the cancellation of the Air Races an extra date on September opened up, the club took advantage of that and was able to get one more event in as well as one on October 4th to round out the season.
So now it’s time to look at the individual classes and championship efforts of drivers.
The Kid Kart class is for the youngest drivers and where they develop their racing spurs before moving up to the next class. There is no championship as such but the top three, who didn’t miss a race were, Cash Prater, Noah Nobles and Drake Kephart.
Probably the youngest driver was Kaid Ryckebosch and she made three as did Cayden Duncan. At the bottom of the list is Hunter Nelson as he only competed in one race this past season.
In the remaining classes a driver can drop one event so that’s usually their worst finish of the season. So it comes down not to the total of points earned but the points after the drop.
Next up in the classes is Junior 1, LO206 and Cooper Perez, who missed the fist race scored victories in the remain five events is the 2020 champion.
Finishing second was Isaiah Nobels, who competed in all the races with a record of one win, one third place and four second place finishes. With the drop he wound up in second.
Kayden Williams and Jeremy Heath were third in fourth while fifth and six places were by Jeremiah Nobles and George Hitti.
Next class is Junior 2, LO206 and the older kids are in this one. This year’s champion is Brooks Anderline who scored three victories, a pair of third place finishes and a second.
Runner up was Andrew Cushman, who scored one victory had a pair of second place finishes as well as two third place and one race where he didn’t finish in the top three.
Giovanni Medina ended up third only 24 points behind Cushman, after the drop. He scored a trio of second place finishes plus a third and two other where he was out of the top three.
After the top three in points came Nathan Heath, Heavyn Hill, Brody Allyn, Jack Foy, Matthew Fecko and Joseph Hitti.
Next up is the Senior LO206 class and they had 17 drivers this year. The class also had the second tightest points race of the season.
After the points drop Tanner Schultz had 935 points while Chase Dulude ended up with 922, only a 13-point difference between the first two drivers.
Schultz had one third place finish, three seconds and a victory while Dulude had two victories, three third place finishes but was out of the top three in the final race of the season.
Winding up third was Jacob Ciari while Deahmee Malone was fourth with Alec Beaudoin ending up fifth in the points ahead of Stevie-Ray Rosario. The rest are listed in the points at the end of the article.
At the beginning of the season Steve Dow, who was up for surgery, put Jeff Wamre in his Masters LO206 kart. While it appeared to be a shoo-in for Wamre he did have a rival.
Rachael Williams made Wamre work for it as she scored four seconds and two third place finishes while Wamre won all of his races. Coming third was Josh Prater who scored three seconds and a third place even though he didn’t race in two events.
Taking fourth and fifth were Keith Mansfield and Jessica Mansfield. Sixth through ninth place were Edward Atkins, Matthew Prater, Crew Kudrna and Giovanni Medina.
The tightest points race came in the Masters Super Stock class. In fact the champion Ed Atkins and runner up Kory Williams only raced five of the six NNKC rounds.
In the end both wound up, after the drop, with 922 points although Atkins third second place finished was probably the tiebreaker.
Finishing third was Brud Beaudoin while fourth place went to Justin Heath, who finished ahead of Paul Picotte. Positions sixth through 10 were Nat Sombatsiri, Jason Anderline, Luke Anderson,Wayne Simon and Giovanni Medina.
This year the TAG class is back and had a championship that ended with the third closest this season. Robert Judd, after the drop, was only 33 points ahead of William Owen at the end.
Judd had two victories, three-second place finishes and one out of the top three. For his part Owen had a trio of runner up finishes, two third-place and one finish out of the top three.
Veteran Chris Bender, who has returned to kart racing, was third ahead of fourth place Mike McMullen and Jeff Culver, who ended up fifth. Sixth through ninth were Levi Ratto, Scott Andrews, Ryan Albert and Devon Ratto.
In the 125 Shifter class Mitch Kennedy is the Grand Master and in fact helped bring it back after it almost disappeared several years ago. Once again he won the championship scoring victories in the five races he was at.
However it wasn’t always a cake-walk as Jeff Wamre would either start the main leading or giving chase during the entire race. In fact once time when Kennedy didn’t race Wamre scored the victory.
Coming in third was Adam Auerbach who was getting faster and faster all season long. He even claimed two runner up finishes with three thirds and one race where he finished out of the top three.
Zeke Corson ended up fourth ahead of fifth place Gerry Williams, who raced twice this season and John Morgan who only raced once in 2020 like seventh placed Jacob Ciari.
All in all, despite the delayed start it was a good season. The club even drew some California drivers as they could race over here. Now if things return to normal next season should be even better, especially if KPX is able to continue.
Next up for the club is their Awards Night then hopefully the practice race will go off in late March before the season gets started.
For further information, especially if one wants to try this cost effective form of racing please check the club’s website at, www.nnkcreno.com.
