FERNLEY, NV (Nov.8) – Sunday is when BBMX (Battle Born MX) staged its final Nevada race for this year in Fernley. As with the last one, the host club was the Reno chapter of the Over The Hill Gang.
Like two weeks ago Mother Nature served up cold weather but this time she added snow Saturday night. Still the track was ready for racing Sunday morning and a lower rider count allowed more combined class motos and a shorter schedule.
Corey Riddle from Winnemucca was the only pro on hand. After winning his second moto he said, “The race was cold but the track is good.”
Asked who he needed to thank Riddle said his parents.
Although he won both motos the second wasn’t exactly a cakewalk. In the first 250/450 the only Intermediate rider, Tristen Mathisen stayed close or within striking distance.
At the end Riddle prevailed in the 250/450 Pro class with Mathisen not that far behind. It was Riddle’s second victory as he also won the 25+ Open race.
Following both leaders were the 250/450 Junior class and Incline Village rider Otto Albrecht took the overall with Sparks rider Seth Clark in second.
The day actually began with the combined Collegeboy and Schoolboy race. At the finish Jacob Kinkel swept both Collegeboy motos.
Behind him in Schoolboy Seth Clark used a first and third finish to out score runner up Otto Albrecht, who had a fourth and first combination.
The Pee Wee racers were well represented in the age combined race. Gavin Clark won the 7 & up class then went on to score a double when he topped the open race.
In the youngest class, the 4 to 6 age group Leo Dailey-Reynolds was the winner.
Next class for the younger riders is 65cc where they learn how to shift gears. Two brothers dominated the class with Garrett Berrington scoring victories in thee 10 and up as well as the Open class.
Wyatt Berrington used a first and second finish to win the 9 and Under class while the last moto winner Gaven Giomi used a fourth and first to claim second.
Back in the 65cc10 and over class Abigail McIntyre, although bundled up against the cold, wore her signature Tutu while she was racing.
Next up in the small bikes are the 85cc classes. These are the final steps before a rider moves up into the big bike classes.
Young rider Rogen Hill from Round Mountain scored a triple. He not only won the 12 and Under class but also the Open class after swapping finishes with Reno’s Connor Gaarenstroom. Hill’s third win came in Supermini where he was the only rider.
Zackery O’Neill from Carson City used a second and first to take the 85cc 13 and Up victory.
In the Women’s races Sierra Koch swept both of her motos in the B class. However in Women A it as a two sister battle for the overall.
Shami Potratz scored the first moto win but in the second her sister Sedanna Losey made a final lap pass to take that win, which gave her the overall for the day.
Another specialty race was for members of the host club and Sparks rider James Swain swept both motos. Behind him Kevin Hargette was the runner up while Anthony Fagundes ended up third.
The largest single class was the 125/250 Beginner that started the day with 30 riders on the starting gate and 29 for their second moto. Using a first and second place finish Matthew Dufur from Reno scored the overall win followed by Mike Hunt, who actually won the second moto but was fourth in the first.
Austin Walker from Dayton used a third and first to take the 125/250 Junior victory followed by Zayne Bissell. There was only one Intermediate rider so Ian M.Wicker won that class.
Next largest class was the 250/450 Beginner group that had 18 riders on the gate for their second moto. Sweeping the day was Nicholas Wilford.
The day’s final race, the one that ended motocross in Northern Nevada this year, was a multi-class one with some of the oldest riders and some of them were the only entries in their class.
Kenny Fye won 30+ Intermediate while Kily Fye was the 30+ Expert winner and Zach Fields was the only 30+ Master rider. Chad Johnson was the 40+ Intermediate winner while Kevin Hargett won the 40+ Expert class.
Moving up the age ladder there were a pair of single entry classes. David Thomas from Bishop was the 50+ Intermediate winner while Anthony Fagundes was the 50+ Expert winner.
Finally there was a trio of riders in the second 60+ moto where Anthony Torres used a two-one finish to claim the victory over the one-two result of Mark Lane the runner up.
Fernley rider Hargett had the honor of winning that final race and ending the day around 2:30 in the afternoon.
“I’m home, this is my home track,” he said. ‘The race was awesome, the track held up good and anybody that didn’t come out today will be very disappointed. My hands are cold, I’m ready to get into a warm/hot shower and I want to thank my family for being here to support me.”
With the last Nevada race completed BBMX has only one more race on its schedule. This time the seriestravels to the Marysville, California area.
That race is at Riverfront MX Park on the weekend of November21-22. For further information, including directions to the track, please check www.battlebornmx.com.
Hopefully the 2021 season will be a normal one.
