FERNLEY, NV (Sept. 27) – The Mason Valley Dirt Squirts hosted the latest round of the MRANN series at a very different venue. This time it was at the 95 Motor Sports Complex and the course combined some of the motocross track, parts of the oval’s pits and an off road course south of the oval.
The result was a very challenging course made a bit more difficult by the dust and terrain.
After his dusty ride winner Reece Honea got a drink, took a breath and said, “It was really brutal, the track was too brutal. Tried to stay off the ground but unfortunately I did go down once. The silt was brutal today there was no good lines, so you had to be smart.”
Then he thanked his family and wife Tina, who is expecting their first child in December. He also expressed appreciation for sponsors Big Valley Honda, Fly Racing and M.J.Barrenback Plumbing.
Unlike at the previous race at Honey Lake on this day the experts raced last so the course was a bit used up when they began their ninety minute race.
At the end of the first lap Honea had a huge lead but that would soon shrink. Further back his nephew Brody Honea eventually took over second and started closing the gap with his uncle.
Honea did lose some time after going down once was was still in the lead when I got back up. In the end his elapsed time was 1:32.00:920.
This year Brody Honea and Austin Wilson are both gunning for the overall championship. At the checkered Honea was 23 seconds behind his uncle Reece.
Three seconds behind Brody came Wilson in third but he was only about a half second ahead of former overall champion Stephen Tichenor in fourth.
Looking down the list Chuck Paya, who ended up sixth was the Over 30 winner. Phil Feil’s 19th place finish earned him the Over 40 win while the Over 50 winner was Mike Nash and Joel Ellis won the Over 60 class.
When the banner dropped 33 Experts took off and 32 finished. Earlier 27 Amateurs were on the starting line while 25 finished.
On the start Carson Calder got the hole shot but soon after that Dustin Burrell took over the point. From then on Burrell just left everyone in his dust.
At the finish Jason Parke was the runner up ahead of third place Kyle Marsh while Carson Calder finished fourth for the day.
Parke won the Over 30 class while Gerald Luczk, who finished 16 was the Over 50 winner and the lone woman amateur Camie Ingram ended up 21st.
After taking the checkered Burrell said, “I’m a little tired. I just kept pushing, Just one tip over about a quarter of the way through. I was second then Carson went off the course and I took the lead from there I led the whole thing.”
Then he thanked his father for handling the pit chores as well as sponsors. One Eleven Concepts, Mike Bars, Bell Helmets, TBT Suspension and DTC Sprockets.
Like at Honey Lake the Novice race had the most riders. There were so many they were lined up in two rows and launched a few seconds apart from each other.
Like everyone else the Novice racers had to deal with the dust and the challenging course. At the end it was a pair of California riders that took first and second.
At the start there were 112 lined up and 108 finished the race. There were several crashes and at least two riders earned rides to the hospital. Their names and conditions weren’t known when this was posted.
When the first line was launched Morgan Wheeler was on point and had a pretty good lead when the first lap ended. It appeared that he was on his way to scoring the victory but maybe a pit stop or something cost him some time as at the finish.
Coming home with the overall victory was Shane Curren, from Portola, with an elapsed time of 1:30:58.320 while Wheeler wound up with a time of 1:32:52.061. Third place was Kyler Flood while Caleb Wissenback not only was fourth but won the Over 40 class.
The Over 30 winner as 17th place Jeff Webber while Morgan Peckenhan used his 20th place finish to win the Over 50 class. A bit further back was the Women’s winner Christinia Courtney, who ended up 23rd for the day.
After it appeared he might have won the overall Wheeler said, “I got the hole shot then I was in first but not sure if I got the overall or not. It was pretty dusty out there and towards the end getting kind of rocky as people were picking the rocks up and I was kind of tired and my arms are kind of sore.”
Then he thanked his parents and family as well as sponsors
Norcal Motorsports, Honda, Kawasaki Modesto, Odi Grips and Dunlop.
