MILFORD, CALIF.(Sept13) — In a normal year the Corey Herring Memorial would end MRANN’s spring season. However 2020 has been anything but normal so this time the race started the extended fall season.
The race not only honors Herring who was lost during a race but helps fund a scholarship in his name. The scholarships go to help young MRANN riders that are headed to college.
After several months of not being able to race those that compete in MRANN (Motorcycle Racing Association of Northern Nevada) turned out in force for the 11th Annual Corey Herring Memorial at the Honey Lake MX Park.
First up were the experts and after racing a bit over 90-minutes Brody Honea won the event with Corey Fletcher and Austin Wilson finishing second and third.
“I was kind of stuck in the dust, making a few mistakes but once I got past those few guys it seemed like I opened it up a little bit,” he said. “I was able to get out of the dust and make less mistakes. The course was dry in most of the spots other than the moto, real rocky, good single track but definitely silty from all the people riding the same loop.”
Then he thanked Trail Blazers, his parents, girl friend Nikki as well as sponsors DDC, O’Neal, Bell, Mike Bars and MX Trophies.
When the banner dropped to start the race there were 48 riders that took off. For some it was a more than dramatic start.
Contact between two bikes set off a chain reaction that sent one bike tumbling end over end. All in all five riders were collected but only one of them needed the attention of the medic.
Right after the field rounded the first turn two more went down but were able to continue. After that dust was a challenge for everyone.
Up front Mason Stone set the initial pace but later Honea would take the point and never be headed. While many riders were of the younger set there were some more senior ones was well.
In fact Honea rides in the Over 30 division while 20th overall was Mike Nash the over 50 winner followed by Joel Ellis, who won the Over 60 group and further down the list in 32nd was Over 40 winner Jake Himphill.
Next race was for the Novice riders and that had the biggest field of all, 102 riders. For safety sake they were split into two groups for the start and thankfully no one crashed this time.
However several riders went down after the start and during the race. The eventual winner Morgan Wheeler had a gift handed to him when both leaders also went down.. After that he just kept pushing until the checkered flag.
Coming home in seventh place was Jeff Webber, the Over 30 winner followed by the Over 40 winner Braden Riley. Further back in 13th place was the Over 50 winner Donny Schmidt and Christinia Courtney, who ended up 32nd was the Women’s winner.
After finishing Wheeler, who came from Valley Springs, California said, “I was second with the hole shot, then some other guy passed and crashed into the leader and I just went around them and never looked back,” he said. “The course was fun, rocky and river bed areas and I liked those. There were a lot of back ups so I just went around them the easiest way I could find.”
Then he thanked Kawasaki Modesto, Norcal Motorsports, Mojo Motorsports, Dunlop and his family.
Finally the racing day ended with the Amateurs. Like the Experts their race was 90 minutes from start to when the checkered flag waved although the Novice race was 75 minutes before the checkered flag waved.
Once the race began Jake Devwes took command and it as all his. Behind him though the battle for second through fourth place was intense and close at the end.
Iai Kapahee ended up second followed by Trevor Thom and Ryder Thomaselli. The difference between all three was slightly over three tenths of a second.
Only one woman Camie Ingram was in the race and it was a challenge for her. After only a lap she pitted with an over heating bike.
Those pitting for her added coolant to the radiator while they also give her some apple slices to eat, a bunch of water to drink along with pouring water down the back and front of her suit.
After that she took off and would complete four laps, which put her 33rd overall. Coming home in sixth place was Kyle Marsh, the Over 30 winner whle the Over 40 winner was Will Allen, who ended up 12th.
After winning the amateur overall a delighted Jake Devries said, “I think I got like third off the hole shot and then first lap in the guy in front of me fell and then I just held the lead after that. There were a couple of lappers but I’ve got my horn there so I just kind of beeped them out of the way but the dust was getting pretty bad.”
Then he thanked his girl friend, father and those that came to help him out.
While there was smoke to contend with a breeze helped to keep that moving and it wasn’t too bad. Everyone was glad to be racing again and looking forward to the next event.
That race in two weeks will be hosted by the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts and be at a new venue, the 95 Motor Sports Complex south of Fernley.
Right now the motocross track is being configured and will be lengthened to provide the needed length. Should be a good mix of course types for the race.
• Saturday’s races began with the Pee Wees, the youngest riders. At the end Robert Belinger, who rides in the 50cc Under 6 division won the overall followed by Cash Conners, a 65cc Novice rider and Walker Segale Vandover from the 50cc Over 7 division.
The Mini Bike was won by Ryder Thomaselli, who races in the 100cc Expert division while runner up Lukas Dean races in the 100 Amateur division. The 100 Novice winner was eighth place Morgan Wheeler while Henry Young, who finished 14th was the 65 Amateur winner.
The final race was a Bomber one-two-three-fourth finish with Drew Chattin taking the overall victory. He was followed by fellow Bomber riders Terry Scheetz, Arie Furlong and Curtis Calder.
The women’s winner was fifth place Sarah Marsh, who rides in the amateur division while the women’s novice winner was sixth place Jazlyn Brussatoi.
