FALLON, NV (AUG.21) – Rattlesnake Raceway hosted the first stop on the new Northern Nevada Modified Tour. There were good fields during the night as well IMCA and Northern Sport Modifieds.
The tour is a marathon of four races over three days at four different tracks. And the big prize is a provisional at this year’s Duel in the Desert.
It took three heat races to set the 22-car main event. That race featured a green to checkered run by the winner Chris Nieman.
“Yea it was green to checkered but I still needed to get out front on that first start,” he said after the race was over. “I stayed on the bottom and it worked out but the lap traffic was a little hairy as the guys were all over the place.”
Then he thanked Lonnie, Grandma Cheryl Nieman as well as sponsors Pit Stop, Simon Graphics and Foothill Meat Company.
It took two attempts to get the race rolling but each time Nieman jumped into the lead from his outside pole position. Soon after the start Robert Miller took over second until two cars tangled in Turn 4 bringing out the first caution.
On the restart Nieman and Miller took off with Cory Sample close behind in third. By the halfway point Sample took over second and the chase was on.
During the race there were some off course excursions but they didn’t being out a caution. Finally with three laps to go it was a single file restart but that had to be called off when there was another tangle in Turn 4.
Finally the final green waved with Nieman, Sample and Miller leading the charge. They finished in that order at the checkered flag.
When the Sport Mod feature began 13-cars took the green with and local Jimmy Ray Huffman on point with Kevin Johnson chasing him. Soon the gap between first and second began to close and Johnson soon took over the lead.
Just past the halfway point here was a large tangle of cars in Turn 4 that took some time to clear. When racing resumed Johnson still lead but now Jason Bannister was in second.
Bannister would use an inside move exiting Turn 4 to grab the lead then about a lap later Johnson got loose allowing Huffman to grab second. So at the finish it was Bannister, Huffmon and Johnson.
“I’m from Bakersfield and it was a little bit of a drive but worth it to come out and play with everybody for this mod tour,” he said. “Kevin got tight over here in three and four then kind of pushed up a little bit and opened the door for me to get by him. Then I just got out in the lead and hoped I didn’t do the same and just held on to her.”
Then he thanked his wife, sons Tyler and Austin as well as sponsors A1 Spring, TBR, Victory Circle Chassis, Dirt Defender and Cowboy Gears.
The Hobby Stock feature was pretty action packed with a lot of carnage. Fifteen took the green flag to start the race but only seven finished the shortened event.
When the green waved David Ausano was on point by the second turn followed by Roy Petersen. Soon after that the first caution came out after a spin collected another car.
One driver was disqualified for rough driving and there would be two more cautions, one caused by a car flipping in Turn 2. Finally the green flew again and Johnny Wood used an outside pass on the front straight to take the point.
Two more quick cautions slowed the race and allowed Tyler Bannister to claim the lead from Wood. One more caution came and the officials ordered a single file restart as well as cutting the race to15-laps since so much time had elapsed.
After one more caution Bannister took off after the green waved again and on the final lap Keith Marson took second dripping Wood to third ahead of now fourth place Ausano. They finished in that order.
The Gen-X feature was a study of patience for the winner. On the green Alex Pettit led until Travis Showe grabbed the point. Behind the leader Mikki Beuchatt found the outside line worked for his car and began moving toward the front.
Soon Beuchatt was in second and used the outside line to ake the lead in the final lap or two. At the checkered flag it was Beuchatt, Jordan Riley, Travis Showe and Pettit.
Finally the night ended with the Bootlegger main that is run after the track is soaked. It’s a push-to-pass division so not everyone finishes.
In the end Stuart Satathite claimed the victory in his car flying a huge Confederate Battle Flag. He managed to stay far away from others so he never had contact with them.
Ace Green was second followed by Jesse Showe in third.
Next up for Rattlesnake is the two-day Octanefest moved from it’s original date. The event will start at 7 p.m. on September 4 and 5 with a variety of classes including Tuff Trucks and UTVs.
