RATTLESNAKE RACEWAY: SEASON OPENER

FALLON, NV (June 6) – Rattlesnake Raceway opened it’s 2020 season with a two-day show that included the latest round of the I-80 Challenge. Although Saturday’s winds were a bit challenge that didn’t slow down the racing.

After the A Modified race winner Jake Mayden, from Springfield, Oregon said, “It was a bit eventful, kind of got torn up in the beginning. We’re just trying to find our own groove and mind our own business. Got into third and got in clear traffic, I felt I was gaining on the leaders and the caution came out at the right time.

“I was working him (Olschowka) over, my car kept cutting out through the ruts down low so I couldn’t quite get the turn. Then one time he messed up just enough where I was able to squeeze up in front of him. I wasn’t giving it up at that point.

Right after the green waved for the IMCA main there was a tangle in Turn 1. Apparently the car of Cory Sample broke its rear end and stopped collecting Mayden, Shawn Natenstedt and Robert Mull’s car.

There was a pause while the cars involved got going again except Sample’s as it had to be towed to the pits. When the green waved again with Jeff Olschowka on point until Shawn Natenstedt took the lead three laps later.

There was another caution when the car of Will Evenson slowed and headed for the pits. On the restart Mayden moved into second then after a lap or two used an inside pass in Turn 4 to take the lead.

Late in the IMCA A Modified feature eventual winner Jake Mayden chases Jeff Olschowka as they duel for the lead.

Two more cautions would slow the field but in the end Mayden had the lead and kept it as he stormed his way to the victory. Natenseted ended up second with Wade Lumsden third.

Seven Northern Nevada Winged Sprint cars took the green flag. Only two cautions slowed the race but Trey Walters and Jeff Macedo were the race.

Macedo had the point first until Walters took the lead. From that point it was the Trey and Jeff show as the tore around the track. His victory gave Walters a sweep of the two-day show.

Trey Walters made it a sweep as he won both sprint car features.

Later back in the pits Walters said, “We started in the back early as we had some troubles. I figured I had better get going here before we ran out of laps so I stepped her up a bit, got on the gas and on the wheel and got to the front. My dad sets up the car so he does a pretty good job. The car handled really nice, just had to put it where I wanted it and drive it to the front.”

Then he thanked Bob at Competition Carbs, Bob Conley, Randy Hannagan Racing and Dave and Cary Walters.

There were seven Dwarf Cars that took the green. Right at the get to Lightning Joe Frock put the hammer down and took off. The only driver that came close to him was Tim Fitzpatrick.

This was a close as anyone got to Lightning Joe Frock (16) during the start of the Dwarf Car feature.

All during the race Frock just kept extending his lead and claimed another victory. While Frock wasn’t interviewed he did put comments about the race on his Face Book page.

“Great night racing out at Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon. Have the new car dialed. Won my heat and the main on a tricky and challenging track,” he wrote.

Then he thanked his sponsors, Damron Racing Las Vegas, R&J Landscaping, Wild Island, Zoomaluma Graphics, Diatte Racing Innovation as well as others.

There were only five Hobby Stocks that took the green Saturday. When the race started Chris Christiano was on point and being chased by the duo of David Ausano and Dan Dias.

There was some rubbing and contact between the Hobby Stock leaders. Here Davie Ausano gets into Christiano. No one spun and both continued their duel.

Soon it became a two-racer battle as Christiano and Ausano were only inches apart and there was some rubbing as well. In the end Ausano made it a sweep as he won both nights.

Dave Ausano celebrates after sweeping the Hobby Stock features on both nights.

Shayna Nieman ended up second after a bobble by Christiano dropped him to third while Dias was fourth at the finish.

The SS4 race was short as only two cars took the green. In the end Stephen Crook claimed the victory while Aaron McIlvain was second.

Another driver sweeping the two-day show was Mikki Beuchat. He won both Gen-X mains and on Saturday Jordyn Riley ended up second ahead of Daniel Kleve.

Mikki Beuchat won both Gen-X Features.

The final race, or brawl, of the night was the track’s new Bootleggers Class. Here one can push another car out of the way to get past them and there are no cautions.

One car was a version of the one used in “Car 54 Where Are You.” It came complete with lights on top. In face during intermission that car chased another that looked out of the “Duke’s of Hazard” show.

Shane Rasmussen’s “Car 54” he raced in the Bootleggers division. At night he had the light bar flashing.

The crowd loved watching the action and when the checkered waved Jeff Tuttle was the winner followed by Ace Green and Alex Kniestedt. The 54 car wound up fourth and was driven by Shane Rasmussen.

Rattlesnake goes dark for a few weeks as they canceled their June 13 race. The next event will be on the 4th of July and as usual Rattlesnake hosts Fallon’s fireworks display.

Friday’s results are in the Results section.
