RACING PREVIEW: JANUARY 6 TO 9

RENO, NV (JAN. 5) – Racing is back and this week’s Racing Preview has what is going on both in our area as well as across the country. Finally we’re leaving the Re-Run Zone.

REPORTER’S NOTE: This week’s preview is early as there is information for those that  want to compete in Arenacross.

CAR MEETS:

• Sparks Cars & Coffee has its monthly meet starting at 10 a.m. Sunday by Buffalo Wild Wings in Sparks. A great way to meet fellow car people and see a variety of machines.

RACING (REGIONAL):

• Big news for this immediate area is the return of the AMA Kicker Arenacross. The series visits the Reno Livestock Events center Friday and Saturday nights. Doors open at 6:30 both nights and the show starts at 7:30 with a full slate of motocross action.

If a rider would like to compete in this event time is of the essence if they want to save some money. There is a $20 discount if a rider registers by 10 a.m. Thursday. To get the registration form please go to  www.arenacrossusa.com fill it out and send it in.

• If one wants another day of riding and practice no matter if they raced or just watched Arenacross well 95 Motor Sports Complex has a “Day After,” practice at its motocross track.

The practice runs from 9 until 2 p.m. on the new track at the facility. One nice thing about being there is that gas is much less expensive than in Reno or over in California.

• Northern California motocross tracks will have practice sessions this weekendand one of them has a race on Sunday. So one can be at the Arenacross event then zip over the hill Sunday to race.

Here are the schedules:

– MMX – Practice 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday then 9 until 3 p.m. Sunday and all the tracks should be operating.

– Riverfront has practice from 4 until 9 p.m. Thursday then 9 to 2 p.m. on Sunday. E Street MX Park has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

OTHG Sierra poster. They will be racing this weekend at Prairie City this weekend.

– Prairie City has an OTHG event this weekend. Practice on Thursday is from noon until 5 p.m.

Gates open Saturday at 7 a.m. Saturday with practice from 8 until 2 p.m. On Sunday gates open at 6:30 a.m. with practice beginning at 8 a.m. and racing to follow.

RACING (NATIONAL):

Burning Man for Gear Heads is this week as Ultra 4 stages the Kind of the Hammers event. Poster courtesy – ultra4racing.com.

• Down at Johnson Valley, California the annual King of the Hammers event is going on this week. There will be around 60,000 people camped out in what is really Burning Man for Gear Heads.

This year the bikes return and they’ll race Saturday in an event that’s a cross between desert racing,  trials and hill climbing. It’s a wild event for the bikes.

The events are live streamed at www.ultra4racing.com/live. Later they will also be on You Tube.

• On Thursday at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub. Over on www.mavtv.com there are a bunch of re-runs from 2019.

• On Friday at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NHRA Friday Nitro Live where they show qualifying for the Winter Nationals.

• As expected Saturday is a very busy day and at 1:30 p.m. Fox Sports 1 will show the ARCA race from Daytona, the traditional opening of racing on oval. Then at 4 p.m. the network airs the NHRA Saturday Nitro Live.

Later that evening NBC Sports at 7 p.m. has Supercross from San Diego. After this round the series heads east.

• Sunday begins at 9 a.m. when Fox presents Daytona 500 qualifying. Only the top two are locked in and everyone else will race for their starting positions in the Duel on Thursday.

Then at noon Fox Sports presents the NASCAR Cup Clash at Daytona. This non points race is for those that won a pole and others that raced during 2019.

Later that afternoon at 2 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has the 60th anniversary of the Lucas Oil Winter Nationals when the NHRA begins its 2020 season.

OTHER RACING NEWS:

• Teresa’s Garage Radio Show, that covers all things automotive, will be on from 2 until 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Then at 2:15 I preview what’s ahead for the weekend.
