RACING PREVIEW: JANUARY 30 TO FEBRUARY 2

RENO, NV (Jan. 29) — Racing Preview for this Super Bowl weekend is pretty slim although there are a couple of live events to watch. Fear not race fans, things heat up starting next week.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Reminder for those wishing to race in this year’s VCGP.

• For you wanting to race at this year’s Virginia City Grand Prix remember entries can’t be postmarked until Saturday February 1st. The main Post Office here in Reno can do that but I think the Post Office in Virginia City is closed Saturday.

• The workshop at Caliber Collision this Saturday had to be canceled since not enough people had signed up. Would have been a good informative workshop.

Caliber Collision cancellation notice.

• Top Gun Drag Strip is having its award banquet Saturday starting at 5 p.m. at the Senior Center in Fernley. The weather should still be great then.

It’s a pot luck dinner, champions will be honored and plans for the coming season will be discussed. And the new announcer will be introduced.

• Sponsor Reno Motorsports is looking for a parts/counter person for full time employment. Needs to be one that rides a motorcycle, good work ethic and pay depends on experience. For further information please call the shop at 775-322-1400.

CAR MEETS:

• With the new month comes the first car meet staged by Reno Cars & Coffee on Sunday. Starting time is 10 a.m. at the Kietzke Starbucks. Don’t know if the weather is going to be as nice this time as it has been.

RACING (REGIONAL):

• There isn’t racing in our immediate region this weekend but that changes next week when the Arenacross series visits the Livestock Events Center.

• Over the hill the Monster Energy Supercross Series visits Oakland Saturday evening. It’s the closest the series comes to our area and, with some luck, the incoming storm won’t reach there until Sunday.

• Four motocross tracks in Northern California have practice sessions this week and weekend so here it is:

+ MMX Racing has sessions from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

+ Riverfront has practice Thursday from 4 until 9 p.m. and from 9 until 2 p.m. Sunday.

+ E Street MX Park has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

+ Prairie City has practice from noon until 5 p.m. Thursday then from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

RACING TO VIEW:

• Thursday is a bit slim but www.mavtv.com has a series of repeats. While they run throughout the entire day at noon there will be a replay of the Summer Shootout followed by other events and at 5 p.m. it’s Madera Racing.

At 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub as the series gets ready for Speed Weeks starting after this weekend.

• Across the Big Pond in Australia the Virgin Australian Super Car series is getting ready for its longest race of the season. At 12:15 p.m. www.motortrendondemand.com will have practice from the Bathurst 12 Hour race. It’s a wild event on roads and qualifying will be shown at 10 p.m.

Then at 3 p.m. mavtv has live racing from Golden Isles as they present a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event.

• Saturday is pretty full as Motortrend shows the Bathurst 12 Hour race starting at 10:30 a.m. from Australia. Of course it’s Sunday over there.

Mavtv also has a bunch of events to show and at 10 a.m. they repeat the Chili Bowl Nationals followed by the Tulsa Shootout. Then at 2 p.m. it’s Lucas Oil Dirt Late Models followed at 3 p.m. with FIM Sidecarcross.

The second night of live racing from Golden Isles starts at 4 p.m. for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.

• Sunday is still in the Re-Run zone as CBS Sports gets the day rolling at 8 a.m. with Snocross action. After that Mavtv has a bunch of re-runs for the race fan.

One of the events shown Sunday afternoon will be one of the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League shows. Photo courtesy – propulling.com.

At 3 p.m. they show the first part of last year’s Loretta Lynns Amateur Motocross Championships followed at 4 p.m. with the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League. Then at 5 p.m. it’s Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions followed at 6 p.m. by Short Track America and at 7 p.m. with Lucas Oil ASCS sprint car action.

That’s it for this Super Bowl weekend but like I said racing is about to take off for the 2020 season. See you next week and safe travels.
