SEASON IN REVIEW: RATTLESNAKE RACEWAY

RENO, NV (Oct. 28) — Now that the oval track racing has ended it’s time for the Season In Review. First track will be Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon and the I-80 Challenge.

Although, like other tracks, car counts were a problem at times the season rolled on with some good racing.

Making all the races was the key to Wade Lumsden scoring his first IMCA championship at his home track.

Perseverance was the key in the IMCA Modified Class. At times there would only be three modifieds but through out the season Wad Lumsden was always there.

When the final checkered flag waved he scored his first IMCA Modified championship at his home track.

One of the stronger classes was the Hobby Stocks that usually had a pretty good field. After a season worth of battles Chris Christiano claimed the championship with 392 points although Shane Cazel gave him a run for his money ending up in second with 383 points.

After those two Roy Peterson, despite some major late season problems with his car, ended up third with 359 points while fourth place Crystal Kontney finished with 347 points.

She in the Navy and leaves for an assignment in the Far East next April so we might not see much of her next season.

Another class that was hotly contested until the final event was the Super Stock 4. The points battle went right down to the final event but in the end Jesse James defended his title and won it again with 385 Points.

Following him Kevin Reuter was second with 359 pints and not far behind was Stephen Crook with 347 points.

The Gen-X season was a great one for rookie high school student Joie Gibbons. She won the class championship with 374 point while her closest rival Daniel Kleve ended up with 314 points.

Bob Cooney scored a double when he won the sprint car championship at Rattlesnake Raceway as well the the title in the I-80 Challenge Series.

One popular class that rotates between several tracks is the Northern Nevada Winged Sprints. Bob Cooney, leading the Lovelock Posse, won the title with Bruce Ferrier second and Kurt Goddard in fourth place.

Not to be forgotten there are four classes of Rattlesnake Outlaw Karts that race on a track inside the oval. Unfortunately any points for 250 and 500 weren’t posted probably because their attendance varied at very race.

The youngest drivers are the beginners, who are earning their racing spurs. Their inexperience can lead to some wild times on the track.

When the final checkered flag waved young Rory Petersen was the champion with 343 points. The runner up was Aiden Albury only four points back with 339 so it was a close points race right down to the final event.

Box Stock is the next class and these drivers have a bit more experience as well as being faster than the Beginners. Like the Beginners it was a very close points race settled at the final event. Topping the class was Kiley/Kaden Detomasi with 330 points.

Only one point behind and in a tie for points was second place Kirsten Detomasi and Peyton Albury each with 329 points.

The next two places also ended up with a tie with 324 pints. So Angelina Petersen wound up fourth and Austin Enox was fifth.

• New this year was the I-80 Challenge. A series of race using three classes common to many tracks. The series only ran at a track that had a two-day show and it ended at Rattlesnake on Dirt Track Championship weekend.

Robert Miller was the I-80 Challenge IMCA Modified winner this season.

In the IMCA Modified Class Robert Miller earned the championship with 202 points and really didn’t need to race on the final day. Coming in second was Lovelock’s Alec Childs with 177 points and Andy Strait finished with 173 points.

For Bob Cooney it was a great year taking his second championship in the challenge. He ended up with 198 point with second place Kurt Goddard finished with 175 points as Bob Shank with 169 points finished third.

The other class was the Hobby Stocks and Ray Davis took that title with 198 points while runner up Brian Thorp finished with 192 points while third plade Mark Hain had 186 points.

The I-80 Challenge Hobby Stock champion was Ray Davis.

The series seemed popular and at the final awards presentation, where the top three in ever class got some extra money, Wade Lumsden asked for feedback. Sounds like the series will be even better in 2020.

Next up for Rattlesnake will be the annual award’s banquet. This year it is at the multi purpose building at the county fair grounds with a 6 p.m. start to the ceremony and potluck dinner.
