CAMEL TOW 100: FLETCHER CLINCHES CHAMPIONSHIP

FALLON, NV (Oct. 6) – The Camel Tow 100 was Round 8 of the MRANN series and the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts staged the event. Last time MRANN raced here was in 2006 and the course lies just off a range used by the Fallon Naval Air Station.

Earlier this year Larry Wright passed away and the race was also a fundraiser to help his family. There was a boot on the registration table where people could place their donations.

For one rider it was a special day as he clinched the overall points championship for 2019. Next year he’ll wear the white #1 on a blue background when he races.

After winning the race Corey Fletcher shows the champion’s plate he’ll have on his bike next season.

“The race was good,” Corey Fletcher said after winning. “I didn’t get out front until about through that second lap. The course was a lot of fun, really technical, rugged but that’s the stuff I like.”

Then he thanked his parents, Moto Graffiti, RMS, Chick Fil A, DDC Sprockets, Moto Mouth and all those that help him.

After a rider’s meeting, where everyone was warmed about two telephone poles, one with a guywire and other parts of the course everyone moved over to the start. As usual they lined up in their proper line depending on if a rider is either an expert, amateur or novice.

A banner is then raised and when it is dropped it’s game on as riders charged across a long stretch heading toward the course. Unfortunately the one that got the hole shot and led the charge had a spectacular get off that ended his day.

After making sure the fallen rider was out of harm’s way the Amateurs were released then after the dust cleared the Novice racers were sent on their way.

At the end of the first of two lap Austin Serpa was in the lead. Problems would drop him out of contention.

Up front Austin Serpa was setting the pace followed by the pack. At the end of the first lap Serpa went through the pits first while Fletcher, Daron Rahlves and Drew Chatten were giving chase.

Not far behind them came Austin Wilson, Willy Heiss and Geoff Bascho.

During the second lap something happened to Serpa’s bike and he dropped from contention. Behind him Fletcher assumed the lead while Rahlves and Chattin held the next two places.

In the end it was Fletcher’s day as he reached the finish first and claimed the overall victory.

Corey Fletcher takes the checkered flag as he wins the race and clinches the championship.

Rahlves gad a pretty significant crash but was able to shake it off and ended up second while Chatten finished a strong third.

Behind them there was a real battle for fourth place. At the end, Wilson claimed the spot with Willy Heiss only 10 seconds behind him.

Despite a crash Daron Rahlves was able to recover and ended up second overall.

For runner up Rhalves it was a lucky day as his lead over third place was enough to let him recover from a crash.

“Picked up a rock then went down hard,” he said. “I think it’s time to invest in a steering stabilizer as there’s a lot of rocks out there. I saw Corey and just was trying to push a little too hard.

“It was brutal, took me a while to recover. I’m more of a woods ridee and out Here it’s really, really tough. It was a difficult race, had a good start and was ahead of Corey until I blew a turn.”

Then he thanked Terry Tuggey, his family and the Dirt Squirts.

The pace of the first two was so quick that third place Drew Chattin arrived around nine minutes after they finished.

Drew Chattin on his way to finishing third overall.

“The race was rocky, other than that it was really fun. The first section was awful beat me, had to put a hand on my clutch the whole time but after that it was fine.”

Then he thanked his parents, Cathy Cavakis, Moto-Source, DDC Sprockets said his Husqvarna bike was really good.

First amateur to complete both laps was Terry Scheetz, who ended up seventh overall. The last part of the final loop he was dicing with Chuck Paya and ended up five seconds ahead of him on corrected time.

A seventh place finish was enough to give Terry Scheetz the overall amateur win.

“It was very rocky, very rocky and that’s all I’ve got to say,” he said.

Then he thanked his wife Dawn, kids and the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts for putting on a good race.

Looking down the results Gil Grieve is listed as finishing 16th and winning the Over 60 class.

First Novice, in the 40+ class, to complete both laps was Caleb Wissenbush, who finished 25th overall. The last part of the race he and another riders had a battle.

In his first ever MRANN race Caleb Wissenbruch was the first novice to complete both laps.

“That was a blast, we really diced it out on that last section. The course was rough, this is my first time doing this so I didn’t know exactly what to expect but I had a good time,” he said. “I was moto crossing before.”

Then he thanked his wife Ellic, who is his pit girl and helps with everything.

Chris Sunderland, who ended up 31st, won the 50+ Expert Class while Camie Ingram 44th place finish gave her the Women’s Novice victory.

Next for MRANN is the season ending “The Nightmare on Purgatory Peak,” on the weekend of October 26/27. With Halloween coming there will be trick or treating Saturday night and riders in costumes get prizes.
