RACING PREVIEW: AUGUST 22 TO 25

RENO, NV (Aug 21) – As summer winds down Racing Preview for this weekend has two major events in out region as well as other car or racing related events.

SHOW N’ SHINES:

• On Friday, from 6 until 8 p.m., there is another Cruise In at Summit Racing in Sparks. A DJ supplies the music and usually there is at least one food truck, plus one that has ice cream on hand.

It’s a great way to wind down from the workweek and be with fellow car people.

• There are two events on Saturday, one local and the other not far away.

Down in Carson City, at Mills Park from 9 until 5 p.m. there is the 4th annual “A Place to Shine,” that benefits a scholarship fund.

Up in Sun Valley, from 9 until 3 p.m. it’s the second annual Show & Shine Fun in the Sun. There are raffles, food trucks as well as vendors and all makes, years and models of cars are welcome.

RACING (REGIONAL):

• Thursday, Friday and Saturday is filled with racing and other things as the Fuji Park Flat Track event returns.

There is a practice session Friday and after 7:30 p.m. many riders visit Carson City Motorsports, just up the road from Fuji Park, for a meet and greet.

• Friday morning gates open at 8 a.m. as the amateur and pro riders arrive at the venue. Amateur practice begins at 10 a.m. with heat races beginning at 11:30. If you’ve never been to this event it’s a blizzard of heats and mains.

This year on Friday the smaller kids have a race of their own at the annual Flat Track races.

After a pause in the action opening ceremonies happen at 7 p.m. with pro heats starting at 7:30 and once again it’s a blizzard of heats and main events. New this year is a strider race for kids from 3- to 6-years old. As an added bonus the winner of each heat gets to keep the strider they raced.

• The for Saturday is almost identical but this time there are some extra races for the Pros including the “Duce,” which is an elimination series with the overall winner picking up some serious cash. Two other crowd favorites are “The Running of the Bulls,” for Bultaco motorcycles and the “Holligan,” race where riders on Harley’s tear around the track.

• Two oval tracks are in action Saturday with a 7 p.m. starting time for each of them. Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville is hosting its final points race of the season while to the east Winnemucca Regional Speedway hosts another of its points races.

• Saturday’s race at Rattlesnake Raceway has been canceled.

• If you’re a fan of drifting there is a Saturday-Sunday event at the Reno Fernley Race Track road course. And one can camp overnight as well.

• Another Saturday-Sunday event is the final round of the KPX series hosted by the Northern Nevada Kart Club at Desert Park Raceway. Overnight camping is allowed from Friday through Saturday night.

Saturday is for practice while things begin early as Sunday’s driver’s meeting is at 8 a.m. with any practice, qualifying then racing to follow. The goal is to be finished by 5 p.m. so it’s going to be a full day of racing.

• Following are the practice times for the Northern California motocross tracks.

   + MMX Racing has practice sessions from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

   + E Street has been rented for a private   session so no practice this weekend.

   + Riverfront has practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday then from 9 until 2 p.m.    Saturday and    Sunday.

   + Prairie City has practice from 9 until 2    p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

RACING (NATIONAL):

• Friday in TV land has a very early start as CBS Sports has some programs about the Isle of Man race. They start at midnight with #1 Isle of Man then at 1 p.m. #2 Isle of Man and finally at 3 p.m. show another motorsport related show.

That afternoon Fox Sports 1 airs NASCAR Race Hub.

• Again Friday is a bit slim but at 10:30 a.m. NBC Sports Gold has Xfinity practice from Road American then at 12:35 has the second practice.

• As usual Saturday is a busy day in TV Land as well on the Internet.

This week the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross series is at Crawsfordsville and if one doesn’t have NBC Sports Gold they’ll have to do some channel switching.

MAVTV gets things rolling with the first 250 moto at 10 a.m. then at 11 a.m. airs the first 450 moto. Later that evening, at 8 p.m. NBC Sports shows the second 250 moto and finally at 11 p.m. the network airs the second 450 moto.

The day gets going on NBC Sports at 10 a.m. with Xfinity qualifying then at noon airs the race from Road America. Later, at 5:30 p.m. the network airs the Indy Car race from Madison, Illinois.

Switching over to www.fanschoice.tv there are a bunch of events to be streamed. One of them is IMSA Weathertech Sport Car qualifying at 9:15 a.m. from VIR. Then at 2:25 p.m. they stream a NASCAR K&N East event from Madison, Illinois.

This is followed by a bunch of weekly races from various tracks.

• Sunday gets started early at 6:30 a.m. as Fanschoice streams the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge from VIR. Then at 8 a.m. the NASCAR Pinty’s Series race is streamed from the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park from Bowman.

Switching back to TV Land Fox Sports 2, at 6:30 a.m. airs the truck qualifying from Canada. Then at 11:30 a.m. Fox Sports 1 broadcast the Gander Mountain Outdoors Truck Series race from Bowman, Canada.

Over on NBC Sports, at 11:30 a.m. they show the IMSA Weathertech Sports Car race from Virginia International Raceway.

That’s it for this weekend, should be a warm weekend with a bunch of hot racing. Be sure to get out and see one live as there is nothing like it.

• Last Wednesday rider Kyle Hershberger had a very bad crash on his motorcycle. He broke several bones and suffered a severe concussion in the accident.

Since he owns a small business this has left his family in a void while he recovers.
