RENO, NV (JUNE 19) – Racing preview this week has another buffet full of car events, some racing as well as what’s on in TV Land. Summer is here and things are rolling along.
CAR MEETS/CRUISES:
• This week’s Thursday cruise in Carson City, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. starts at the Empire Ranch Gold Course.
• Once again Summit Racing, located at 960 East Glendale in Sparks, has its Friday cruise in. It runs from 6 until 8 p.m. and is a great way to wind up the workweek.
• Saturday has two car meets with the first being when the Northern Nevada Camaro Club meets at Summit Racing. The meet begins at 10 a.m. then the group usually as a cruise planned.
The next is the Va-Room! Motor Show welcoming all types of vehicles including motorcycles. The meet is from 2 until 9 p.m., with awards given out at 7 p.m. and the location is at Reed High School in Sparks.
• Fallon/Fernley Cars and Coffee ends with weekend starting at 11 a.m. with the Sonic Cruise In. The Sonic Drive In is located on the Reno Highway in Fallon.
RACING (REGIONAL):
• Two oval tracks and the Top Gun Drag Strip are in action this Saturday.
To the east of downtown Fallon Rattlesnake has another points race that includes the Outlaw Karts. The karts start in the afternoon and the cars are supposed to begin their show at 6 p.m.
Down in Feather River country American Valley Speedway in East Quincy has another of its regular shows beginning at 6 p.m. and all four home divisions are running.
To the south of Fallon, Top Gun Drag Strip has $5 Saturday. Great time to see just what a person’s car can do on the quarter mile as well as a chance to do some grudge racing.
They do ask if one brings a truck to please make sure it’s clean. Dirt on a drag strip is not a good thing.
• Over in Northern California four motocross tracks are having practice sessions this weekend.
MMX has sessions from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. They are also looking for someone that can reside at the track and will probably help keep it ready to go. If interested please check their Face Book page.
E Street MX Park has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday while Riverfront has a session from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday then from 9 until 2 p.m. on Sunday. Prairie City has sessions running from 9 until 2 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):
• Thursday is again pretty slim but at 2 p.m. NBC Sports has NASCAR American followed at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports 1 by NASCAR Race Hub.
• Friday gets rolling at 9 a.m. when Fox Sports 1 has NHRA Friday Nitro Live from Norwalk, Ohio. The network follows this with the first NASCAR Cup Practice from Sonoma Raceway then at 2:30 airs the second practice.
To help celebrate the track’s 50th anniversary the track is bringing back the Carousel Turn. This is a long, downhill run that puts the cars on the escape part of the drag strip.
• Saturday is a very busy day both in TV Land and on the Internet.
Things get rolling at 5:55 a.m. when ESPN 2 has Formula 1 qualifying from the Paul Ricard circuit in France. Then at a more civilized hour,, 11 a.m. Fox Sports 1 has NHRA Saturday Nitro Live.
Once again, unless a person has NBC Sports Gold they will need to do some channel switching to see all the motos at this week’s Lucas Oil Pro Motocross race.
The first motos are on www.mavtv.com with the 250 bikes going at 10 a.m. followed at 11 a.m. by the 450 bikes. Then switching to NBC Sports the second motos begin at noon with the 250’s then the 450’s get their chance at 1 p.m.
Over on Fox Sports 1 at noon the network has NASCAR Cup qualifying from Sonoma. Over on Fox Sports 2 they have Gander Mountain Outdoors Truck qualifying at 5:30 p.m. from Gateway then at 7 p.m. Fox Sports 1 airs that race.
Switching back to NBC Sports at 2 p.m. there is Indy Car qualifying from Road America.
• Switching over to the Internet, www.fanschoice.tv has a series of races it will stream on Saturday.
Things start at 8 a.m. with a Amsoil GNCC race then at 1:15 p.m. the Procore 200, a K&N Pro West race from Sonoma is streamed.
There are several weekly races and it probably depends where a viewer is located as to what they will see. Things begin at 3:30 with an event from Langley Speedway followed by one from Jukasa Motor Speedway, Tucson Speedway, Magic Valley Speedway and at 7 p.m. with a NASCAR/Inex event from Alaska Raceway Park.
• Switching back to TV land Sunday gets going at 5:30 a.m. with the Formula 1 race from Paul Ricard in France. Formula 1 is back at its spiritual home in Europe.
Then at 9:30 a.m. NBC has the Indy Car race from Road America.
At noon over on Fox Sports 1 they have the Toyota/Save Mart 350 from Sonoma Raceway. The NASCAR cup drivers are going to be challenged by this hilly and twisty road course in the wine country.
Finally at 3:30 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has the NHRA Norwalk Nationals from Ohio. This broadcast will be on a delayed basis.
That╒s it for this summer weekend and if you have a chance to get out and see a race live. Good family entertainment and there is nothing like it.
Watching an event on TV you’re a bit removed and really only see what they want you to view. When seeing it live all the color, speed and excitement is right in front of you.
Have a safe weekend everyone.
