FERNLEY, NV (JUNE 15) – Fernley 95A Speedway hosted the Nevada Pro Stock Association’s opening round as well as the 4th Buehn Hobby Stock Classic. For the Hobby Stocks it was a chance to pocket $1,000 if they could win.
The feature race of the night was actually run in two parts. It was the Buehn 4th annual Hobby Stock Classic, which paid the winner $1,000 and second place $500 with the rest of the field getting what the track usually pays.
There were going to be 20 cars but unfortunately Bob Vaden and Richard Italiano were unable to make the start due to mechanical issues.
On the green Randy Boyd led the charge with J.T. Stark and Cody O’Brien close behind with the pack following. Soon after that Tori Edgington’s car slowed as did David Paine’s and both wound up in the pits.
This caused the first caution and on the restart Chris Christiano jumped into the lead then began to put a gap between himself and those chasing him.
The next caution came when Boyd’s car slowed on the back stretch. This happened with 4-laps to go and soon the checkered waved.
Now the cars headed to the pits where they were refueled before returning to the track. Once line up was correct the green wave sending the cars off again.
Up front Christiano was on point but close behind were brothers Rocky and Royce Goetz. About this time the car of Christiano began to smoke, which at times kind of blinded both the Goetz brothers.
The race for second was either side-by-side or nose-to-tail and all the while they were trying to overhaul the smoking car of Christiano.
Again, with four to go there was a caution for debris in Turn 4. Once that was cleaned up it was a dash for the checkered.
Christiano was able to reach the checkered flag first but it was probably just in time. After stopping briefly to start his victory lap the car left a large puddle of water and showed how much oil it was leaking.
Rocky Goetz was able to take and hold on to finish second just ahead of his brother Royce. Behind themRandy Boyd was fourth, Rick Miller fifth and Cameron Knight sixth.
Unfortunately Christiano was unable to return to the front straight for the usual trophy ceremony but the Goetz brothers did.
“It was fun racing, I mean that’s the way racing is supposed to be. We were clean, a little pushing, a little shoving but it was all good. We were racing for everything we could get, we got everything we could get. I feel like the third restart got me but can’t change that now.”
Then he added with a laugh, “I wish we had 50-laps. It was good racing, it was door-to-door, got to thank Royce since he’s the car owner so his cars finished second and third.”
“That was a fun race,” Royce said. “I don’t care who it is, I don’t care if he’s mad about the starting position that was a fun race. We all raced really clean and those three cars, we were so even. Yea one of us were better every now and then but you know what, I had a lot of fun.
Then Royce thanked sponsors Auto Marine Machine, Travis White, Dueling Dice, Gold Fast Racing.
Finally Rocky said,, “The was the best race of the year.
There were 15 IMCA Modifieds that took the green and Cory Sample wasted no time taking the point. Right after that three cars tangled causing the first caution.
When the green waved again Sample was on point but soon Chris Olexiewicz moved into second. Right after that Adam Water’s car found the wall causing another caution.
There was another restart but a quick caution followed after the car of Robert Miller had its drive shaft come loose. Possibly damage from the three car tangle early in the race.
On the green Olexiewicz took off and soon went into cruise control as he left everyone in his dust. Behind him Sample was able to hold off Riley Simmons and they finished second and third while Paris Archie ended up fourth.
Only three Sport Mods were on hand but the car of Nick Boucher was unable to start the main event.
At first it appeared Andy Welch had a strangle hold on first when the 10-lap main began. After a few laps Rusty McMillian began to close the gap and soon took the lead as they headed down the front straight.
A spin by Welch caused the checkered to come out and McMillian had himself a victory.
“My car was real loose and finally figured it out and there it went,” McMillian said later.
Then he thanked Allen Kneistedt for giving him a motor. He also expressed appreciation to Bob and Judy Vaden, his father and then dedicated the race to his mother, Cindy McMillian, who has been fighting cancer for the past four years.
It’s been a rough start of the season for the Nevada Pro Stock Association. Their first race was rained out and due to several factors only five cars were on hand but one was unable to start.
Only four took the initial green and then leader Bill Pearson and another car tangled in Turn 2 letting Robert Miller take the lead. Also involved was the car of Blane Hill that suffered right front suspension damage.
When the race got rolling again Pearson, driving his uncle B.J. Pearson Nuclear Banana car took the lead and went into cruise control. Towards the end Miller tried to make a race of it but had to settle for second while Brent Lawrence was a distant third.
Next race for 95A Speedway is on Saturday, June 29 with a p.m. start to the action.
