MILFORD, CA (June19) – The 10th annual Corey Herring Memorial race was held at the Honey Lake Motocross Park this weekend. Each year on Father’s Day weekend this event honors Herring, who was lost in a race and also is a fund-raiser for a scholarship fund that helps young deserving riders.
The Honey Lake course, located south of Susanville, Caifonria has both the motocross and cross-country sections. Due to the length of the track all three of Sunday’s classes had a separate race rather than starting one after the other.
The Amateur race was 90 minutes long, from start to checkered while the Experts, who raced in the middle had a two-hour event and the Novice riders raced in a 75 minute race. This means the first rider to get the checkered flag usually isn’t the winner as that racer is still somewhere on the course.
After winning the race Corey Fletcher said, “I got right behind Russell Tonjum on the first lap, make a few mistakes in the dust, went down twice. Then I tried to pick up the pace and stay steady.
“Russell made a couple of mistakes up in one of the washes so that?s when I seized the opportunity. I always love this course, it’s my favorite race of the year. And I liked the new format where we did a loop on the moto track first.”
Then he thanked RMS, Chick fil A as well as his parents and everyone that helped him.
When the banner dropped to launch the 25 experts Fletcher led the charge up the hill and through the first turn. Just passed the half-way point on the first lap, Austin Johnson was on point followed by Tonjum, Fletcher and C.J. Crandall.
As they started the second lap Tonjum was on point followed by Johnson and Austin Wilson. At that time Fletcher had slipped to fourth with Crandall fifth.
Things were about to change as Fletcher charged to the point and left everyone in his dust. Crandall would move into second while Tonjum took over third as Wilson slipped back to fouth.
They finished in that order but up front Fletcher was on a tear and completed 10-laps while places two through 12 only did nine.
One of those completing nine laps and taking the runner up spot was C.J. Crandall.
“The course was good, a lot more moisture the we expected. Dust in the off-road sections but it was good, sand, rock and motocross. We just continued to push all day, about 7th on lap 1 and about 12th at the start then I got up to second overall and held off some fast guys.”
Then he thanked his father Kirk Crandall and wished him a Happy Father’s Day. Gave special thanks to his fiance` as they are getting married in five days. Then he expressed his appreciation to sponsors Reno Moto Sports, as they treat him as family, Roseville Yamaha, Jason at Inside Line Connects and SBB for the suspension work and everybody else.
Other winners were James McMurray taking the Over 30 win while Josh Wilson was the Over 40 victor. Further down the list Danny Young was the Over 50 winner while the ageless Pete Prichard took the over 60 class.
Of the 25 starters only 22 finished the race. First to take the checkered flag was 18th place Marty McGreal.
Starting the day were the Amateur riders. They also had a good line as 44 of them took off after the banner drop.
First on point was Mike Majors but eventually he faded to finish sixth behind Andrew Robinson. Taking fourth was Josh Cook, who followed third place Caleb Bonneville.
It was an Idaho one-two as Ryian Binford took the victory followed by Kaden Binford so two family members scored the top positions.
After dust settled Binford said, “It went pretty smooth, the course was awesome was pretty dry so when every you got up on someone you couldn’t really see so it was hard to pass. But we got a nice little battle, back and forth and I just felt really good and took off.”
Thanked his parents, friends and family then gave special thanks to his father and wished him a Happy Father’s Day.
While 44 riders started the race three failed to finish the 90-minute contest. First to reach the checkered flag was 10th place Justin Bradley.
Ending the day with a one hour and fifteen minute race was the Novice class. They had the largest field of the day as 57 riders started.
For Garrett Rychlik it was his day, leading from the get go he just ran away with the race and he was riding a 125cc bike. When the second lap began Rychlik was extending his lead followed by Logan Larive, Levi Bliss, Braden Riley and Jeffery Willis and Ryan Wilson.
Further back in the field Rachel Roen headed the women but she would only complete two laps. In the end Darcy Johnson won the Women’s class after completing four laps.
Heat was certainly a factor as many faded during the race.
Up front winner Rychlik and Levi Bliss, who came in second completed six laps. Behind them came Braden Riley, Jeffery Willis and Ryan Wilson, who ended up fifth.
Behind first and second, who completed six laps, 21 riders finished five laps while dozen riders were only able to do four laps while 11 riders only did three laps. Several riders only completed one lap while two didn’t finish the race.
After taking the checkered Rychlik said, “Dude, that was the funest course I’ve ever rode. The silt and rock was pretty hard on a 125 as the tire is just spinning behind you.”
Then he thanked his parents and wish his father a Happy Father’s Day.
This time two riders reached the checkered flag first they were 26th place Mark Henderson just beating out 40th place Corey Hansen,
During the day only a couple of riders needed attention from the medics but thankfully, they didn’t suffer major injuries.
• Saturday was the first part of the event and that’s when the youngsters in Pee Wee and Mini bikes get their chance to race as do the Saturday Woman and Bombers.
In the Pee Wee race Ryder Allen, racing in 65cc Novice, got first overall with 50cc, 7 & Older racer Walker Vandover finishing second, while oliver McElroy was the 7 Older 4-stroke winner.
In the Mini Bike race Walker McGreal and Madden Kirsch finished one-two riding as 100cc Experts. First overall in the Women/Bomber race was Elysia Ulrich with the long bomber Michael Furlong ended up fifth overall.
Now the desert racers of MRANN get a brief rest as at the end of the month they’ll head for Elko to end the spring series. Those wishing further information can go to the series website at, www.racemrann.com.
